How do you wear or use the Eye Shield after eye surgery?
Ғылым және технология
For patients that have eye surgery such as cataract or lens replacement surgery, you will be asked to use an eye shield to protect your eyes after surgery. Typically the shield is used when you go to bed to prevent inadvertent pressure on the eye for the first week after surgery.
I explain how to apply the eyeshiled using paper tape.

Thank you. I had no instructions other than "wear this at night." Seems I am not the only one. What is wrong with all these doctors and nurses not giving proper instructions?!

Yes I agree
My mom had first cataract surgery today. We were given a eye shield and roll of tape in a bag with no directions at all. Your video was extremely helpful.

Ditto. Don't know why that's a problem to include the instructions.
I wore this wrong for a week, lol! Now I know for the 2nd eye tomorrow. Thank you!
Just had cataract surgery today. THANKS for your video. You just made my day easier!!!
Great video! Thank you. My husband and I had tape all over his face before we watched your how to video!

Yep, exactly what I did to myself, haha. I can laugh about it now but eye surgery is an anxious, stressful business, and you wanna know you’re taking the best care you can. Wish I’d taken a photo.
Definitely helpful - I taped it on weirdly for four nights and will now do it correctly. There were certainly lots of after-surgery instructions but none about the shield.

You are so right!
Thank you!! It’s alarming how many people have shared stories of not being provided instructions on how to put this on. Video was a lifesaver for me to help my mom. Thanks again!

We got what I would call "partial" directions just prior to discharge. But details like the length of tape is helpful. Also seeing the demonstration of how to rotate the shield at more like 45 degrees on the face is also helpful. It's more like an eye patch, less like glasses.
Thank you for this, simple yet very effective. Love you tone of voice and the calmness of it too. Bless you ❤
I had eye surgery three days ago . This video was a HUGE help. The nurses gave me the proper instructions but I am in my late 60’s and my short term memory isn’t good . Thank you Thank you for taking the time to shoot and upload this video
Thanks for the clear instructions on this. I just had cataract surgery and was sent home with an eye shield and some tape but no instructions. Your video helped me find a comfortable, safe and secure way to affix the eye shield and it has barely affected my ability to sleep which is great as I am a side sleeper
Perfect! Thank you so much. They didn't mention anything about the shields after Lasik surgery but included the tape and shields - After reading the instructions - it didn't tell which way to put the shields on. Can't thank you enough for showing the easiest way to put tape and adjust them.
Just got lasik and was taping these to my face all sorts of different ways. Although effective at protecting my eye, def spent more tape than necessary! Thank you for this video!!

I just had cataract surgery a couple of days ago and was using what seemed like miles of tape.
Thank you Dr Wong for this explicit video. Standard of healthcare is truly declining. After eye surgery, given eye shield and drops and an appt to come back in a week. SMH. So glad I decided to check on KZread 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you so much for this video. My mom just had this surgery and the instructions I was given over the phone were way more intense and complicated. This was so simple and quick and done. I truly appreciate you.
Perfect. This is now a no brainer with his explanation. Thank you. I had the top of egg in the corner.
Thank you! Mum was sent home after her cataract operation today and usage directions was very sketchy! You've cleared it up so I can put the shield on for her correctly before bed tonight (after her drops).
Thank you for those instructions. I am having cataract surgery next week on one eye. Must say I was a little worried about touching my eye during the night. Very helpful and very clear instructions.
I looked at my little eye shield and literally thought I was stupid that I couldn't figure out to put it on! Thank you so much for the clarification! After watching this, it was a snap.
Excellent video! My doctor put the shield on me and at the time he said “now this is where I need your help. Just hold it in place while I tape you up.” Living alone, I was a bit worried as so how I would do it without assistance. Also he didn’t point out, and I didn’t notice, that the top went above the eyebrow, making that vital 45 degree angle across the face. I was trying to put it more horizontal. I also used WAY to much tape, because the first application was a huge lumpy mass of bandage, padding, shield and tape. They didn’t actually provide tape so I was using bandaids, which are twice the length you need.
Wonderful ! I am fixing to have cataract surgery and was worried about how to use the eye shield. You put my mind at ease. Thank you !
Thank you! Very helpful! I had cataract surgery today. I didn't have any instructions on how to do this. You are such a blessing! 🙏
Would you believe I just had cataract surgery and they didn’t tell me the correct way to put the eye shield on? I actually had put it on with the top of the egg pointing towards the top of my lips. Thank you so much for this video. I’m so glad I looked for it.
Thank you Dr. Wong, this short video was very helpful. I had my surgery yesterday and I was given two different eye shields (no tape was included) but not told how to apply either of them. So simple now that I understand how to use the clear shield. I will mention the lack of explanation when I review Oakwood.
Very clear and very useful instruction! Of course, our eye surgery center gave us a baggie with the shield and tape and zero instructions! Your video is VERY helpful. Thanks! 😊
This was a life saver yesterday, got sent back from surgery without instructions on the shields, thank you so much 🙏🏻
Thank God for you, Dr. Wong! I had surgery yesterday and tonight I had to put the shield back on. I was given nothing on how to do this from my surgeon or his office. Seems like something pretty basic they should have in place.
This was very helpful. My father had cataract surgery and had no idea how to do this.
Sooooo helpful…especially since no one told or showed me this…and when I left they put it on wrong 🤷♀️ On my next day follow-up they attached an elastic band to go around my head…but just putting my head on the pillow that night kept moving the cup…so I searched & found this video…never thought I’d find any info. So THANK YOU‼️…now it’s stable 😊
Thank you, Dr. Wong, for the clear and simple instructions!
Thank you so much for making this video and explaining how to position this eye shield. My husband had cataract surgery today. There were no directions with the shield. He was only told to wear the shield at night. Well, we put it on entirely wrong and then I found your video. Thank you for your help.
3 years later and this was so helpful! Short and simple. thank you!
Great explanation. Great slow push-in with the camera and how about that end transition... Love it. Nice work
Eye surgery coming up in 2days. Was given the eye shield with no instructions. Paid $50 for the shield/tape and flimsy shades. Thanks for the video
This is exactly what I was looking for. The first two articles I found had different looking shields and had the tape all across the shield from top to bottom. This makes much more sense! Thank you again, Dr. Wong.

Thank you so very much for this video. My husband also sent home without instructions and had taken it off before I could see how it was placed
On the mark! Appreciate the help. Also, viewing your live surgery really helped me understand and see what was going to happen in my surgery. I Was much more relaxed when it was time for me. Got me through it.
Thank you so much for making this video! I just had cataract surgery and they gave me this eyeshield to take home but they gave me absolutely no instructions.
Thank you so much! I was so excited after my surgery today (I can see!) I didn't ask how to use it. Much appreciated. Short and sweet!
Thank you!! No directions! I appreciate this so much! I don’t want to ruin the fact that I can actually see again. !!
Thank you! I had cataract surgery and was given a shield but no instructions for how to use it. Thank goodness for KZread and Dr. Wong.
Am having cataract Surgery on Wednesday. This video is very helpful for me and my daughter who is going to help me. Thanks so much
Perfect! I just came back from cataract surgery..as with previous comments. I was given tape, shield and brisque instructions...thank you for a more in depth show and tell.
Thank you very much for posting this. Just like a lot of others here it was the same for my 81 year old mother. Given patch and tape with no instructions. I guess they know your video explains exactly what you need to do. Thanks again.
I had cataract surgery 10 days ago. The shield they gave me was a metal oval shield that really didn’t fit the contours of my face well. And the tape that was included caused a horrible skin reaction. I had angry red skin where the tape touched my face. I had to go buy tape that was for extra sensitive skin. It did the trick. As a note, I was given absolutely no instruction on how to apply the shield.

If that's the case, ask the eye doctor how to use the shield. BTW I'm gonna get a corneal patch because I have a perforation that needs fixing today.
Thank you! Just had surgery been putting on wrong, Had no instructions. So very grateful to connect with your simple clear instructions/demo
Thank you for eeeveeeeer! My bf had eye surgery today and now I know how to help him thanks to you! 😁😁😁
Thank you so much for this. I had eye surgery for a granuloma and cauterising my lower tear ducts and didn't understand how to use the shields properly until I found your video. You've really helped me.
Thank you. Having cataract surgery in 5 days and had no idea.
Thank You So Very Much!!!! I have been putting it on wrong the whole time. I have 2 more nights to go with my left eye and the shield. Next week they will do my other eye so this will come in so handy and is way more comfortable. Thank You So Very Much!!!!

Same as me, my other half just had eye surgery, but they didn't tell her how to apply the shield, so glad I found this video!
Well I wish my doctor explained how to use this like you did. I was taping it upside down with tape going all across it. Thank you for the clarification.
Thank you! I’ve been wearing it incorrectly. Now I know how to apply it tonight and the three night next week!
Thank you! This was exactly what we needed to figure out!
This is such a helpful video, simple and direct. Thank you!
Sometimes you don’t need a university degree, just someone who tells you how to do it.
This was very helpful. Thank you so much Dr., for making and sharing this video.
We just had eye surgery and this is a life saver - thank you!
Thank you for posting. I had cataract surgery today and I left the office realizing no one explained how to do this.
I love KZread. Having surgery in the am. Thanks for the video on how to use.
Thank you! My husband had cataract surgery and they didn’t say how to place it. So this was great!

Thanks. Extremely helpful
Thank you for posting this video. I just had cataract surgery and did not look at the direction this shield was going when I took it off
Very good video. Details are important. I wish Dr. Wong was my eye doctor.
Thank u so much! I had a ton of tape put in on my first two nights and it still didn't feel stuck right! Will try your method from now on
I know how simple this should've been after my mom had surgery, but they just slapped that thing over her eye with tape. It was placed wrong and caused more irritation. I came here for help.. Appreciate the instructions.
Thank you for the instructions. I have been wearing the shield incorrectly for nearly a week and a half.
Yes. Thank you. Very helpful.
Thank you, this was extremely helpful.
Thank you!! Exactly the info I needed!
Very helpful! Thank you 😊
Thank you! This video is a life saver (and literal eye saver)!
Thank you so much. I wish I knew this with the first eye but am glad to be able to get it right with this second one.
Thank you Dr. Wong! This video is very helpful. God bless!
You are soooo handsome!! Thank you for the advice I had cataract surgery last Tuesday, January 25th!! Thanks to you I was not nervous at all you are wonderful! Thank you so much
Thank you so much. I had surgery a few days ago and have been using about 3 inches of tape on each side, plus I had the "top" part positioned next to my nose! It stayed on but there was so much tape I couldn't see out of it!

Very useful video. Everyone should watch after eye surgery
Thank you for explaining.
Thanks! The post Op nurse showed us, but I couldn't remember exactly how to place it.
My mom had her cataract surgery 2 days ago and we were asked to buy an eyeshield with plasters with absolutely no instructions. Hell-O from Sri Lanka
very informative. i wish i had seen this video a week ago. i ran out of the little roll of tape early on and had bandades to tape it on all around the shield. then i couldnt see thru the bandades. what a mess. well i will know for the next eye now. thank you.
Thanks for the help just had it done today
Thank you very much for the informative video. I was given a bag with tape and eye shield no indication of the right way to wear it.
Outstanding, just what I was looking for.
You explained this very nicely. Thank you very much.
Super helpful video, was definitely doing it wrong!!
Thank you! I've been putting my eyeshield on wrong for 2 weeks. I will do it your way.
Ty for the info, had cornea transplant surgery a few nights ago and was curious
Thanks. I’ve done it before but could remember when I got my second fixed.
Thank you so.much as my doctor's nurse didn't tell us how. You saved the day
