Darren asks:
My MRI showed bony edema around the neck of the calcaneus bone. I have all the symptoms of a calcaneus stress fracture, but the CT, X-rays, and MRI don’t call it a “stress fracture.” I have had trouble walking and standing for 8 months now. How would you treat such a condition? I have tingling and numbness as well.
The calcaneus is the heel bone. People can develop calcaneus stress fractures from overuse, such as running too much without enough time for the bone to rest and recover from that stress.
In this video, I discuss methods doctors can use to make the diagnosis. I also explain what the usual treatments for a calcaneus stress fracture are and how you can return to activity.

Hi! I’m an Irish step dancer and my heel has been hurting really bad when I walk and flex it and it is on the side of my foot and kinda in the middle. But it doesn’t hurt when I touch it. What should I do? Edit: it has been 2 months and still hurts in the same spots but now it hurts a lot when I touch it, I have been icing it, having pain killers, and anything. I just don’t know what to do any more

12 weeks now after both heels fractured. No surgery and the fractures were on the bottom. I wore the boots for about 6 to 8 weeks until I felt ok walking without them. In week 11 I could walk bare foot on the carpeting. This week I went to work just to walk around and get back into things but all of a sudden im getting pain where the fractures accured so I think I will ease up a little bit:) I'm hoping for a full and complete recovery with no future issues.

I have a left Calcaneal stress fracture that went misdiagnosed for 7 weeks. MRI was conclusive and I was then in the boot/non weight bearing for 7 weeks but continued to swim, aqua jog and bike some. Pain continued so I’m now in a cast and on crutches. Unfortunately my right heel now has a lot of pain and a positive squeeze test. I’m very anxious about presumably having 2 stress fractures. DEXA was borderline osteopenic and I’m on CA and D now. It’s been a long road and I haven’t run in 4 months!

Since I had been down and not very active before doing all that (in slippers) I got bi lateral calcaneus stress fractures!! I’m currently wearing two boots only been about 10 days still have a decent amount of pain. (After injuring it initial I walked on it for a couple weeks before seeking help.)

This is a fantastic thread with a common theme of misdiagnosis!! I'm into my fourth month after an injury doing the 'mountain climber' exercise. I felt the pain immediately, but it was actually the next day that had me struggling to walk - brutal. I went to a GP a few days later, and he swiped a handheld ultrasound wand over the heel area and stated it was inflamed, swollen facia - go home, maybe RICE, but to come back in THREE months if I wasn't better :) So fast forward - another ER visit as I started having immense swelling on the talus - huge puffy watery pocket (so painful - super ugly) and under the foot in the arch. The doctor says she'll look at the Xrays, but there were no Xrays. She sends me in, they see nothing, and now a bone scan scheduled in a month (Alberta healthcare :() and a foot ultrasound in 3.5 months. She sends me home walking, no boot, crutches, advice other than maybe RICE? I'm limping, no exercise, and I whine a lot - convinced it's a calcaneus stress fracture that is getting worse . . . a misdiagnose steals time for proper recovery. Will a podiatrist be able to determine exactly what the injury is or should I just book and pay for a private MRI??

Same here.. Xray and ultra sound shows plantars facitis and heel spur according to doctor. Foot clinic doctor said its a toren tendon.. I refuse to believe its any of those diagnosis since I'm in so much pain after I slammed my heel on the concrete playing outsode with my daughter. Physio therapist suggest a Boot which I will be purchasing one tomorrow. I forgot to mention there a spot on the heel that is round and swollen. I'm frustrated with these misdiagnosis 😤

Hello Dr. Geier, I have had a calcanous stress fracture for over a year. Initially treated with walker CAM boot. Did not heal, in fact got worse after some time. I also have severe plantar fasciitis. 10 days ago I had a subchondroplasty of the calcaneus and I’m in a boot. I was allowed to bear weight with the boot as tolerated. I have been hurting more since I started walking on it, and I decided (myself) to start using my roll about / scooter and get off of it again. Are you familiar with this procedure and it being done in this bone? What is your opinion/experience? I’m 28 yrs old and I am a nurse. This is concerning me that even after surgery it hurts more than it did before surgery. I must mention, there was some extravasated calcium phosphate when the subchondroplasty was done. Looking forward to getting your insight. Thanks!

I fell staining my back deck on May 25th. I fell off the 2-step stool. Had x-rays done day after and 2 weeks later and was told that nothing was broken. On the 3rd week; I went to another medical group and they did x-rays and sure enough! I have a fractured heel. Was put on a boot and then a couple of days later; I was put on a hard cast. I tried helping myself walk by putting some weight on my toes but still using crutches. I don't think I'm getting better. I have a Dr appointment on July 15th so I'm hoping I haven't done any more damage even with the hard cast on. I'm so depressed!!!

I twisted my ankle playing football and planted on it and went down instantly about a month and half ago. AT first I thought it was my Achilles tendon because I felt pain in the back of my ankle and pain was too much couldn’t tell where it was coming from until it healed Alil .i watched this video I realize it’s the Calcaneus I feel the most pain on my side above the heel and I can’t run full speed without pain or walk also. So my friend has a boot so imma do that and stop being active until it ends appreciate it !

I’ve had heal pain for over a year now after stopping running due to plantar fasciitis symptoms. I went through the typical PF treatment and that resolved the primary issue in about 6 months. The pain persisted in my heal, towards the back and out side. I saw a PT and foot doctor. The doctor gave me a cortisone shot and prescribed a night splint and stretching. After 4 weeks of that, still no progress. After doing research on stress fracture symptoms, I’m fairly sure that running through the PF for a while lead to a stress fracture- I can’t walk or stand for very long before it becomes painful. It has been over a year since I stopped running. Is it common that PF leads to calcaneus stress fracture? I’m just about start a 4 week air boot cast treatment. Is that what you recommend?

I just got an x-ray done today to see if I have a heel fracture. The squeeze test would show that I do but I don't have constant pain. Would you have constant pain with a heel fracture? Mine is worse after I've been sitting for a while. Which is more like plantar fasciitis but I don't have pain in that area.

I had a cyst removed from my left ankle after an injury in July 2020. I’ve had heel pain since then that feels like stepping on a nail or lego. I thought for sure It was planter fasciitis but as I just gave in and went back to my ankle ortho x ray showed a stress fracture of calcaneus. Ugh as if being in a boot for 6 months last year wasn’t enough and timing just right to ski again this winter, back in a boot on the right foot now. I did ski once but i could still feel that pain. I really want to ski and get on the new treadmill we just ordered. The boot and night splint however do not seem to be relenting the pain as much as I’d hoped. I do have to switch to a croc to drive. Also left ankle that had surgery is swelling a lot more now that my right is in a boot. Afraid to call ortho that they will cast and nwb me.

I will be 50 this year. I am live sound engineer/tech. I have spent the last 31 years touring with huge arena sound systems etc. An average work day is about 18 hours... with a lot of time on your feet moving and lifting heavy sound equipment. I love my work, and I now own a small sound company of my own. But I have to admit...that kind of life has torn me up. I am still very active, but nearly every part of my body hurts. I am a bit over weight these days as well. But that is only something thats happened in more recent years. I have incredible heal and ankle pain on my left foot. Its debilitating. I have had numerous injuries over the years, almost all work related. I wear a boot, stay off my foot, and get back into pretty good shape. But when I get back to work out in my shop, it almost immediately becomes VERY painful again. I've gotten x-rays...never a stress fracture visible... I follow the doctors instructions, wear the boot, limit activity, ease back into things, etc, etc... But its just not getting better, and we are going 3 years now. I love my work, and I love being out in my shop tinkering with my sound equipment. I love going out...loading in, setting up, operating, tearing down, and loading out my gear. I'm not ready to hang up my rock-n-roll shoes just yet. I have downsized some.... I've repackaged a lot of my gear, so its easier to deal with and transport. That has helped... but I am still in immense pain. My foot feels like its about to explode right now... but if you x-ray'd it... it wouldn't look that bad. I've paid good money for all kinds of shoes, etc.... My doctor hasn't offered too much help. I've been to specialists. But its still killing me. I just want to lessen the pain. My shoulders are shot, my back is shot, and now my feet are shot. I have a high pain tolerance and can generally work through it. But the foot thing is about to wipe me out. I'm also the only source of income for my family... so stopping really isn't a viable option.

After my half marathon, I noticed that I have swelling and pain around my righ leg heal. When I squeeze on bone, the pain is getting reproduced. For a day or two I had problem while walking but I don't experience pain during walking however little swelling and pain after pressing on CALCANEUS bone is concern for last 5 days. I have stopped running.

Recently broke both my heal bones (calcaneus) on both feet I was actually doing no sport to do it I ended up having to jump off a 20-30+ foot drop and instantly could not walk it was a real sh*t show since June 7th my feet were swollen and bruised along with the breaks I was in a boot and told not to walk on them after the first month I was gradually able to stand a bit more but the pain was still there now a couple weeks along from that I am able to walk slightly in shoes but it’s a little painful on my ankles not so much in my heels but I walk all funny now I was wondering how long do people that are completely unable to walk from this injury usually take to heal and if I am making my recovery time longer because I’m simply trying to “jump the gun” and walk on them early or is it strengthening up the ankles and heals making them stronger so I will be able to walk sooner if that makes any sense?

My running shoes broke down a lot earlier than expected about 4 weeks ago and my feet took a beating on my long run. The right foot especially. People keep saying it's plantar fasciitis, but I've had PF and this feels different. It feels like the heel bone is bruised. I'm seeing a podiatrist on Monday to determine if this is a stress fracture. Praying that it's not!

Sports medicine specific question, not medical advice, just comparing between sports- in equestrians where we have to put our heel down to anchor our legs to prevent falling off over jumps, how does that type of weight bearing affect healing (heels down, weight in heels, ankles as shock absorbers, with ball of foot on the stirrup)? Doesn’t that require extra time in healing or is the concussion from running more damaging in comparison and therefore causes a delay in the typical healing time? Thank you so much.

I've had my calcaneus stress fracture for 6 weeks now. It started during a 6 mile easy run - the initial discomfort felt more like my foot was just bruised or feeling tight so I kept running on it. I knew something was wrong the next day when it hurt to walk on and immediately stopped running. I saw a sports PT a few days later and he thought it was just swelling of the fascia on the ankle. The next day I saw another PT who said it was Achilles Tendinitis, and then I decided to go to a Podiatrist who also said it was Achilles Tendinitis and I treated it for that over the next 4 weeks with physical therapy, ice and special inserts. I wanted to see an Ortho MD and get an MRI just to confirm my diagnosis - and that's when I found out it was a stress fracture in my heel bone. WHAT?! I coudn't believe it and immediately started wearing the boot & using crutches. So far it feels as though the pain has really diminished, but being misdiagnosed for 5 weeks means I could have been much further along with my recovery if I had gotten the MRI in the beginning. But I'm glad I finally did get diagnosed and know how to treat it.

I got 2nd MRI that shows the stress fracture has been healing, I still feel pretty bad aches throughout day but swelling is ridiculous. Cannot walk 5mins without ankle swelling up. Is this bad for being 6 months in healing with walking boot? 3 days ago I broke my heel while stepping off a step. at the hospital the ER doctor missed the break and sent me home with best advice to put on shoes tighten them up tight and walk on it. Now I did not take this advice and choose not to step on the foot at all and the next day called my own doctor who informed me that it was broke according to the xray and a ct scan was ordered to determine the break and what the treatment will be. My question are ER doctors really trained well enough in reading xrays on parts of the body that are known to be very difficult to read, should they wait for the xray tech's to read these xrays first to make sure the diagnose is correct before advising patients

The left side of the heel of my right foot has been hurting for 2 months now. It feels like a pretty solid area (bump i guess) that hurts if i press on it I was resting much more than normal and had modified my walk or other movements to avoid stepping on my heal -- I was pretty sure it was a bruised heel. Finally I decided to go to the podiatrist and I was told it was plantar fasciatis (which does seem to be part of the problem) and that I should do a stretch/heal massage before getting out of bed. Also, I did NOT need to limit my activities. No X-rays were taken. As I was leaving I asked my dr if my heel was bruised and he said: "yes it could be bruised", but gave me no other advice. As far as activities, I have been playing volleyball once or twice a week, indoor and beach --and I have been pretty much fine until I wouldon that heel, even lightly, in which case it started to hurt enough that I sensed there was more of an issue. The pain at times has gone away completely until once again I would land on on it, even lightly. I played tennis (carefully) this last weekend, and it started to hurt a bit more and seemed to encompass more ofmy foot. It's been 2 months now and I really don't want to waste the entire summer not being able to be active, if possible. On the flip side I really don't want the injury to stretch into the fall with my activities still limited. I feel it is more than Plantar Fasciatis, like a calcaneal stress fracture or possibly a bruised heel. Any thoughts?

I broke my heel from a 4 ft jump and a bad landing. This was back in may 2019. Currently it is still swollen, bruised, limited in mobility. My consultant says I will have limited mobility and dismissed ice would have any benefit from bringing down the swelling and saying that will remain also. The foot feels denser to touch when compared with the other. I walk with pain. Can't rotate my foot to the left and right. Barely have strength to go up on to my toes. Treatment I had was no surgery, cast for 6 weeks, boot for another 6 weeks. Then walking on crutches. Even now feel an imbalance on my feet like my weight isn't distributed properly.

I jumped off a fence and smashed my heel into the ground. A day later I got an x ray and no fracture showed up at all. But i was on crutches for two weeks with no weight on my foot at all. Then i got another x ray of my foot and the doctors told me that there was a fracture. Its been about 5 weeks since the injury and I do track and field distance. I've been running on it for a week and the pain is very minimal when i run. Should i keep running on the heel or go back to crutches and no weight on it at all? I do about 4 to 5 miles per day and the pain after the runs dies down. I don't know what to do and doctors don't help much

I have been having constant paid for more than 2 years, but the last few weeks have been extremely difficult to walk. I think it might be a stress fracture that is escalating now. I don't have medical aid and would like to use a boot to see if it helps, but I cannot afford it.

Check for used ones from family/ friends. Check Facebook marketplace, Ebay, Kijiji. Ask to negotiate because you can’t afford a new one! Hope this helps :)

I messed up my foot a year and a half ago while running on the treadmill. I stopped working out and thought it would heal by itself quickly. I worked a sediatary job, so normal walking wasn't an issue. Only when i tried to run, i had issues. Finally after 6 months i went to a foot doctor, he said I had a calcenous stress fracture and he made a foot support and had me use that for about 6 weeks. It got worse during these six months. He didn't even recommend a boot, but I borrowed one and tried to use it for a few days, but I felt the lack of support of the boot actually made it hurt more. He tried some foot therapy stuff, didn't work either. I then went to a ortho doc, hoping to have better luck. He suggested everything I had already tried. He then wanted to do an MRI, which I did not do. Those are way to expensive lol. Anyways, 1.5 years later and still not back to normal. I am now a 29 year old female, so I feel like it should have healed by now, but haven't had any luck with the doctors. Since stopping working out, naturally I have gained weight, so I am now sure this is not helping the process at all.

Also, sometimes when I do a lot of lifting or walking, I noticed it will go numb from my heel to almost my knees.

Vanessa Mora seems like a nerve issue, its not a fracture.
