Catching up on some of your older videos. I’m so glad someone else has “listening add”. I can’t retain as easily as i do when i read, but, I do like to read along while listening to the audiobook at the same time, although i need to listen at normal speed which is slower than I read. I think the listening and reading is my ultimate way to block the world out.

I'm no fast reader and that's okay, I enjoy it all the same and that's what counts. Plus I mainly read in English and that's not my main language, so that slows the process even further. On audio books, I once did both. Listened to "Will save the galaxy for food" while reading along on my e-reader. That was a pretty fun experience!

I remember in my teenage years when I thought I had to read fast just because I thought I NEEDED to finish a book fast and that ended up being one of my biggest mistakes. My comprehension was not good and I ended up being burned out. I stopped reading for more than 5 years. Things now have changed, and I learned to read for pleasure and at my own pace. So bottomline is, don't pay attention to your reading speed, just keep reading consistently and enjoy it

I used to read a lot when I was little then stopped reading in middle school, started back my junior year and couldn’t even retain my attention on a book. Took me like months to finish a book, then I dived headlong into reading, gained my speed and longevity. Reading for 3-5 hours a day now. Glad I got back into reading.

When people I know started a book club, a lot of them were amazed at how fast I would read. The joke is that I don't read fast. Based on sites like howlongtoread, the average is 250 words a minute, and I hit 220 on average. It's all about how much time you want to commit to reading in the first place. Back in those days, I read for 3 hours a day. 3 hours a day at 220 words a minute makes for a LOT of books. Time spent reading is more important than reading speed.

Agree. Especially if a book has shorter chapters, I squeeze in reading time often, making it seem I read fast, when in fact I just dedicate more time to it. I think I probably only read at a slightly above average, to average speed.

I read for about 3 hours a day and it took me about 1 week and a half to two weeks to read anything between 250 to 300 page books. To me that's really slow considering some people read books that length at half a week... Though to be fair, i do have reading ADD so i often have to go back and re read a page or i re read a paragraph i liked multiple times.

For a long time, I could only listen to audiobooks because my anxiety condition made it nearly impossible to sit and focus on a book. Now I enjoy both. I think readers get a different experience from listening or reading. For my favorite books, I own both book and audiobook. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on audiobooks. When I was unable to read books and could only listen, I felt really invalidated as a reader for some reason.

For years I hated on audiobooks. Then I got transferred to a location for work that is an hour away from home. Two hours of driving everyday gets really shitty, really fast. Finally gave audiobooks a try and discovered that I love them. Each book I read a get a physical copy and an audiobook. Audio for commute, physical copy for home. I've been able to knock out books at a rate that I've never achieved before in my life. I totally understand what you mean when you mention "listening ADD". It definitely happens to me sometimes and I find myself skipping back in the audiobook when my mind wanders throughout my commute, but for the most part it has really been a good system for me to read as much as I possibly can. All that being said, I still feel like audiobooks are somehow "cheating" or whatever. I don't know if I'll ever be able to truly shed that attitude. I don't really care though. I haven't been as passionate about reading as I have been the last couple years in a long long time.

I 100% agree with you. I used to refuse to try audiobooks but 2 years ago I got audible and gave a few a try and didn’t hate it but what really changed me was when I started to use my library audiobook catalog. I have been able to get through so many classics I’ve always wanted to read but never busted to the top of my very long TBR while just driving and walking/running as well as so many great nonfictions. I can’t decide if when I post on IG the books I “read” including those I read via audiobook is a bit of a misrepresentation but overall I still want to talk to people about those stories to so idk. Reading is reading and I am finally okay with 2/3 of my reading via audiobook, especially since so far this year I’ve still read 30 physical books (66 audiobooks so far) which is so much more than I ever read before adding in audiobooks too for some reason. And I feel so much better getting through books I’ve wanted to know the story of for forever. Anyways, happy reading. :-)

Mike, this is a perfect explanation of my EXACT philosophy of reading, how I read so fast, and why I prefer reading rather than listening to an audiobook. I tried audiobooks for years but couldn’t get into them. I kept trying because I’d enjoyed the Doctor Who and Dahl ones I listened to as a kid in school. I tried everything, ones that were more like radio plays, slowed the speed down, listened in the shower, made sure my focus was fully on the audiobook with no distractions. Every trick someone suggested didn’t work for me. My mind always drifted after not even a couple of minutes. I never listened to audiobooks if I was cooking or cleaning or put them faster like some people did because if I couldn’t listen to them with no distractions how the hell was I supposed to pay attention while doing something else? I don’t know what made me try it but one day I was drawing and put one on. By the time I’d finished the drawing I was up to 2x speed, half way through the book and most importantly could tell you everything that happened in it. Turns out I can only listen to audiobooks if they’re 2x speed and I’m doing something relatively taxing with my hands. Probably should have worked this out sooner since I’m one of those people who can’t study in complete silence. So yeah I can only listen to audiobooks if I’m being distracted from listening to them at the same time. Who knew?

It never gets boring and I retain everything! I've never been able to completely read a book even when I was in school, it messes with my eyes and plus my dyslexia didn't help. Audiobooks gave me a second chance at enjoying these really amazing incredible stories. I'm just really happy to be able to be apart of it and experience these stories. Audiobooks really gave a breath of fresh air into my life. A lot of people hate on audiobooks but its just another way of consuming a story. I was never able to retain audiobooks either until recently. I found that if you read the first 100 or so pages of the book to start you can build the characters and the world up in your mind without distraction. Once you have established the foundation of the story then switching between reading and listening becomes a lot easier. I tend to only do this for larger fantasy books and it has been very enjoyable especially if the narrator is good.

I do this. Audiobooks are great with me I travel 2 hours each day to work so the 2 hours is often spent listening to books. It's amazing how much you can 'read' when you listen to books.

So, this is not my first video of yours I am watching, but I did just discover you today and have spent hours watching your videos today while "working". First off, I think you are my favorite Book-tuber channel. Now, I need to know where are you getting these bookcases? I need to get my book life in order so I can display my collections of nerdiness and get everything organized. Great channel for helping me find something other than fantasy books to read and I really appreciate that!

100% agree about audiobooks! Love any way people consume stories. Movies, TV, Books, and Audiobooks! I'm so lucky that I can listen to audiobooks and have been able to really just consume so many more stories that have been on my TBR for years when I go for long runs or walks or drive around and LOVE it :D Also I love nonrfiction audiobooks both biographies, general nonfiction like Malcolm Gladwell, or science/history that feel like a lot like long podcasts and I have learned so so so much :D Thanks for great videos! ALSO a huge mug lover myself :) haha ESPECIALLY book themed hahah

Mike's Book Reviews I’m at 96 books “read” this year as of today 66 audio and 30 physical books/ebooks. I almost always read epic fantasy as physical books (wheel of time especially has been all physical books) for the same reason you mentioned and then anything else if fair game if the audiobook is available from my library for free. I also love rereads as audiobooks (finishing up a reread of all 13 of A Series of Unfortunate Events as all audiobooks but read them as physical books first time around for example) or almost anything read by the author (especially autobiographies) is an extra special experience as an audiobook imo.

My secret to reading fast and for long periods of time is to 1)start reading aloud, this gets your brain engaged 2) speak as quickly as possible and don’t care about fully pronouncing the worlds or saying every word 3) eventually you get to a point where you are mumbling the worlds at rapid fire 4) then you will naturally stop mumbling and you will transition to reading in your head at the fast pace of ur mumblig 5) you are engrossed into the book from this transition from speaking to internal reading allowing you to get lost in the book and loss track of time. So this is what I do. I had a eye convergence insufficiency as a kid which lead to me not being able to read well. I couldn’t focus on the worlds on the page. I was really bad but eventually I got eye therapy, which fixed my problem. I read the lunar chronicles in middle school book unit in English and it was really hard to read but it was so much fun. I wanted to read better so I came up with this method over a year of trying different things. I use it all the time now and it is how I manage to read 1 to 2 books a week.

"listening ADD" - What a great term! I thought it was just me. It's so hard for me to focus on fiction audiobooks. And yet I listen to podcasts, sermons, lectures, etc. and have no problem concentrating. Maybe it's only a fiction thing? I've done a little better when it's a book I've already read. Even then, it's a struggle.

I had the same issue with audiobooks until I got a Freda reader and increased the speed. My friend said it sounded like a foreign language to her. I explained that I read very fast and on normal speed I get bored and my mind wanders, and I don't retain what I heard. At the increased speed it's closer to my own reading speed.

Probably because I am almost in the same age category as yours 😂 One thing I liked about your videos - I watched 4-5 of them - that you don't end your videos with ' hey guys. Please like, share and subscribe..' kind of thing. Your videos are quite mature. Even though I don't stick to a single genre or a writer or a theme so to speak - as I read both fiction and nonfiction - you are a very good conversationalist ( if that's a word). Keep at it. Cheers!

My issue is this.... when I watch a PBS adaptation of a classic, am I "READING" the book? As an English teacher, I've done a lot of study into the effects of reading on the brain. And there are benefits to our brain that only come with the function of reading and processing words from a page (or screen... though the effects of reading physical books are interesting. It increases our memory's capacity). But I don't get why everyone is so offended by this issue. No, when you listen to an audio book (or watch an adaptation), you are not READING the book. BUT... it doesn't matter. There is nothing wrong with listening to Audio Books. They are a good option for many people. But they do not use the same part of our brain that is used when we process words on a page. It isn't reading (according to science). The argument shouldn't be "Is listening to an audio book the same as reading the book?" The important thing is that you are still being captivated by the story. And for that, either format is great. Stories are also important for our development. Ok, that's my hot take for the day..... don't roast me too badly.

I was always an avid reader, I only listen now. I had a stroke 3 years ago and one of the things that suffered was my ability to read. I find it very difficult to get from one end of a paragraph to the other, I keep either skipping sentences or words and end up re-reading the same thing multiple times as if I'm stuck in a loop, it's extremely frustrating. I listen with my eyes closed and fall right into almost any story. There are a handful of narators that are bad, although most are quite listenable. So I have come to think of listening to a story as reading, even if it really isn't.

Audio ADD I understand. I had a very little case of it. I casually got into audio books during long Interstate drives. Several hundred miles of Kansas or Nebraska plains needed some audio stimuli to let me stay awake at night and music can put me to sleep at night. When my cataracts caused my vision to dim I transitioned to mostly doing audio books. I think the sheer repetition of listening to them more and more sharpened my ability to go through books via audio. Speed can be increased and if the narrator is clear and understandable I'll occasionally double the speed on my player to go through it quicker. If I ever found myself lost I just jumped back a couple chapters which some players can do very easily. All that being said I read and re-read books visually for decades before getting into audio books and even after getting the cataract surgery and being able to read easily again I found myself still going audio first since it's so easy now to take it along with me doing chores and such. If interested in trying it out I'd suggest using one of the Audible free books you're casually interested in or listen to one you've read visually before to see if you can get over the ADD little by little with a cheap player like a Sandisk (not the best but workable and not much money to see if you like it). I also love the audio books so I can game while playing a book. While I advocate the audio side of things for how it enriched my life I certainly support reading anything in any way that works for you. Like you, I don't care what or how you read so long as you read. Just because something isn't to my taste (King for example) doesn't mean someone else won't enjoy it and given his sales I respect him as an author, hell I respect anyone who gets published no matter if I like their books or not. When it came to horror fiction I found myself drawn to John Saul or Brian Lumley. And if you like vampire/sci fi stories Lumley's Necroscope series is worth a try. Not much in the way of romance or sparkles in them. Keep the reviews and lists coming, they give me excellent ideas of what to add to my reading list.

One of the things about reading fast is if you do it frequently enough your mind will start to memorize what words look like in writing. It will see the length of the word along with the beginning and ending letters, and it’ll immediately process the word - even the misspelled ones will be processed correctly! Audiobooks, Cliff Notes, etc. It all counts as “reading.” It’s all about absorbing the ideas. Call yourself a “dilettante,” but you still managed to touch upon some of the ideas in the books 📜🧠📖 Myself? I’m a suuuuuuper slow reader and my mind wanders a lot after about 15 minutes or just a few pages in a book. I’m even slow to read comic books! Hahah 🙈💦

Wow Mike, we’re so alike. I don’t have much of a social life outside of work and church, so I just read like a boss. Either that or watch anime. Like you I can’t do audiobooks, they’re great for many people but they’re not for me. I just listen to music when I’m out and about running errands or doing stuff at my place. I’m an introvert so it makes wanting to read even easier.

I can't do Audiobooks either for the same reason as you. I just can't focus on the words being spoken to me. Now, I do have ADD which makes reading itself a challenge at times. But I love reading and I make an extra effort to focus and I reread things I glossed over many times so I don't get lost in the story.

I tried some audiobooks for fantasy and it was harder to follow for sure and easy to miss things. I find it easier with biographies or autobiographies (especially when read by the author) and have enjoyed those as audiobooks. For reading a lot, I think there is a lot of downtime to find extra reading time. I like to watch sports, often just on my couch. During commercials I'll read, and by the end of a game, my bookmark is a good chunk further. When exercising, I often choose a sit down bike machine at the gym and then I can read while exercising.

I like Reading and Listening to books. I grew up with audiobooks that we got from the library and listened to on long trips. Later, when I started using Audible (2008ish) I was listening at 1.5-2x speed depending on the narrator to keep me engaged. For the last few years I have been back down to 1.25x because I have found that I like to get some of the nuances that the narrators add to the experience. Thanks to reading in both methods, I can go through a hundred fifty books a year.

I find I enjoy books more if I read them though and retain more of it. I love the Stephen King hardcovers. Don’t they look great just as mere objects? Audiobooks are perfect for audio-learners, as well as visually impaired people. Being a visual-learner, I prefer to read epic fantasy and educational material with my eyes, because I retain the names and information better. I like audiobooks for other genres, tho, especially because I can listen while I paint or do mundane housework. I usually listen on a slightly faster speed, like 1.25 or 1.5. And yeah, it totally counts as "reading", because you are taking in the words with your ears, just the same as with your eyes.
