Adding fluval bio stratum could be a great idea for this. I’m not an aquatic person but I’m a plant person(we use it for propagation). The plant food in the bio stratum would probably be ideal as well as it give something for the algae to hold onto.

Try AquaVitro AquaSolum. It’s a higher grade counterpart to the Fluval Brand. Unfortunately it’s a not an online buyable brand and only in some stores. However some stores are still willing to ship it if you call them, it just can’t be marketed on a business website.

It's really easy to grow a carpet. Just keep the fluid levels low with good circulation for a couple of weeks. Anything you want it to cover is in the water level. If you don't want it covered then you need to get it out or above the water. Once the carpet has progressed, swap the water out, fill the tank, and put a UV filter on the circulation system. The carpet shouldn't spread very quickly then.

@@walterclayton7025 The infestation is in my pond. I am unwilling to introduce an non-native animal into the wild. Idk even know where the snail came from. I don't think they are native to Europe. idk if the yoyo loach can survive 4°C water temps.

You might want something for it to grow on, glass can hold some algae but if you want a thick carpet to form I think your best bet is to lay a thin layer on the bottom, or maybe even place a screen on the bottom of the tank to help give it anchor points. Also if you decide to remove it later it all comes out in one large carpet.

algae deffo doesn't need anchor points, I literally had a vertical garden in my tank till recently

I have a big rough rock that I let algae grow on (mostly because I couldn't get rid of it, but I've now embraced it). It's grown into a lovely carpet on the top and down one of the sides, and honestly it looks really good. I've had it for a while and move it into a new tank every time I tear down the one it's in. Whichever tank it's in has the most stable water parameters in the house. I don't even have a filter on the tank it's in now because good ol' algae rock does 80% of the heavy lifting and the plants do the rest. All I gotta do is pull off the longer bits once a week, and it doesn't even spread to other parts of the tank. Don't waste your time fighting algae, make it fight for you.

Co2 and Amazon grow light and a lot of air stones. Within 2 weeks you'll have carpet algae all over any decorations, but it will also cover all four sides of your glass aquarium

That's your sewage pond environment. Lots of filamentitious algea! Raise turtles in there, they don't smother.

Lumens and voltage are not the same thing. Get a small full spectrum grow bulb and you’ll be good. You don’t need the brightest or strongest light for algae. Just has to be full spectrum for plants

What evidence do you have that planaria comes thru rainwater? Do you have any studies that have found that to be true? Also this is out of genuine curiosity, I was gonna say this was wrong but then I figured maybe it’s not and I’m just not aware that it can happen, Altho it does seem highly improbable. What’s more likely to happen is that rain water collects and then a bird that has bathed in an established pond or vernal pool has gotten planaria stuck to it as a hitchhiker and then comes and bathes in the rain water bucket and that’s how the planaria or other hitchhikers get introduced, but still if you do have a study showing that they can be caught up in actual rainwater I’d be interested in reading that!

Never mind the fake light in your basement. You need to start that in real sun light , at least a bucket full to start of with.

Adding sand or lava rock could increase your chances. It helps give the alge something to anchor its self on instead of just floating around in the water.

I have 3 koi ponds. Those carpet algae shows up after 1-2yrs of pond cycling. Beauty comes with time

Make sure you oxygenate that water. Maybe add a layer of media for the algae to grow onto

Lol that's so funny. Both my tanks are overrun with some type of Java green algae I got a clump from my daughter that she bought at the pet store I ended up with snails too furry and fuzzy. But it also leaves a light green coat on all surfaces. It almost looks feathery. I do think I'm emptying them both this summer as the guppies will be fine in my big outside barrel water feature for a few weeks once it warms up thru Also tend to pop out a blind and one babies outside

It's not that you need to keep your light on 24/7. You just need a strong light and a lot of nutrients. I still have algae issues despite having other plants in the tank. From what i have seen in my tanks, if hair algae grow in a shade, it will be thick and dark green. Ifngrown in direct light, it will be fluffy and lught green.

Strong spectrum light and strong filtration system . The light opens at least 6-8hrs per day.

Most breeders keep algae since they grow fast and help keep ammonia levels low. But hair algae is one of my most hated algae. When it gets out of hand, only 3 types of fish can eat it.

Daily fertilizer is wild but I’ve never grown aquatic plants

It shall probably fail, glass surface ain't pretty to hold on for algae carpet, its mostly done with a already dirt floor on the bottom of ur tank or some stones. But glass you just have a verrryyy slim chance for it

His goal is to grow a algae carpet, he’ll need nutrients from the fertilizer because he doesn’t have any fish or nutrient rich soil, just a bare bottom tank. Floaters could outcompete the algae for nutrients and light, he can add it later on if he wants though

I can't explain the science behind but bubbles seem to really help to send all the sediments sinking and settling at the bottom

I'm not sure if it's true but I was once told to put a fair size rock in the filter from your donor tank and wait for it to grow nice and fuzzy and put it in the new tank with your mix, something about it works as a stable starting point. Also you have to have a few snails to clean the walls.

To be honest I get really thick algae carpets completely by accident quite often My SAEs chew it right up tho when I let them

You should up your filter and flow. Doing that will just suspend the algae and you'll get either of the two: floating algae or green water algae.

We accidentally grew it. It felt like it happened over night.

I always seeded my tank with a flat rock that already had algae growing on it. Basically have a shallow tub of water about 2-4 inches deep outside with several flat rocks and add fertilizer. Algae carpet ahoy.

What about having a kind of substrate ? So beneficial bacteria can colonize that and if you want stringy alge, that would have something to grow on, not just bare panes of glass (or whatever transparent material, acrylic, ...).

Im no tank guy or whatever, but can algae latch onto glass to create a permanent structure? Id imagine maybe some type of porous rock and bedding might help them settle? Idk what kind of rock or bedding, thats your job :P Or im way off and wrong. Idk.

Change the water. Change the water again. Keep changing the water until the carpet is the only green left. If you want stem plants with the algae carpet, put some aquasoil underneath it.

You can skip all of that, run a UV light, and make a lush green algae carpet with nothing but DIRECT SUNLIGHT! WHEEEEEE!

You need some time of pump because you need water flow to get the stringy look

Base - nutrient rich, something like aquasoil / powder. Put it in front of a window. 👍

“Make sure the lamp has a high voltage” ElectroBoom will be knocking on your door, you mean High Wattage. Even that’s not the entire story, plants only absorb certain parts of the spectrum, cheap generic leds lack in these areas, you need a high wattage WRGB plant based led light. You can get away with brute forcing High CRI light led lights which is basically Sunlight.

Direct sunlight helps grow it faster

I've done this successfully before, but be warned. If you're keeping something like goldfish or anything that will eat the algae you're in for massive clean ups. The goldfish continuously eat the algae 24/7 and their waste clogs the filters all the time. A full spectrum light turned on full blast for 12 hours a day will nake the algae grow eventually. But after a year my light didn't have enough power anymore and the algae slowly died off. Its a beautiful display but not worth to try again in my opinion.

My way of growing algae carpet is put your tank outdoor in shade place where it is enough sun light because in my experience when the water get to warm under the sun the algae will grow very slow or it simply just make your water very green. Dont put under direct sunlight this method of course depends on your country climate. Dont forget to put guppy or shrimp inside. With this method I successfully grow algae carpet in just a week , when you are satisfied you can put back your tank inside and fill it with fresh water, use strong lighting and dont use aquarium salt or the algae will died. That inspiration video definitely made me want to try that too, but I’m probably going to try something else for how to start it growing. I think I would probably need to shred a clean marrimo moss ball in a blender and pour that in a thin layer to cover the bottom of the tank gravel then leave the light on 24/7 until it starts growing then evenly sprinkle with sand or fine gravel, just a little dusting so it easily keeps growing around the grains of sand or gravel, and add more fine sprinkling of sand or gravel after it has grown around the previous sprinkling of sand or gravel, I’ll probably want to repeat that many times so that the marrimo algae carpet has enough stones incorporated into it’s structure that it won’t float to the surface when it starts pearling later when I want to add more water and fish to the tank but the first step is probably easier with minimal water, only just enough to cover the algae layer to prevent parts of it breaking away to float to the surface. I have never tried this myself before but I have had a lot of those algae balls floating around the top of the aquarium and the blender and water trick is how I successfully propagate moss for a terrarium from a tiny bit of moss I liked that I picked from my backyard so I hope it works for algae too. Did your algae carpet turn out well? Sorry I forgot to check when this was posted before I started writing this, and I can’t check now or my comment disappears and I have to write it again, so ignore the question about how it turned out if it’s just been started recently.
