How do our birds react to a kea impostor?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

For a few months now I have had a set of kea lawn ornaments that I have really wanted to see how the kea would react to. So to wrap up 2021, I bought one into the aviary just to put down in front of the birds and record their response!

One Kea to another, "Not sure 'bout that one. There's something dodgy about those toes."

That was so interesting! I think the minute a few of them were brave enough to touch it with their beak they quickly realised it wasn't real lol. On another note - I would absolutely love one of those kea ornaments for my garden! Let's hope the Warehouse still stocks them when I can eventually travel across the ditch lol :)

We went back a couple of weeks later to try get some more and the kea were all sold out from the branch we were at, but I think they did still have some pukeko and tui ones

They allow you to keep them in a cage and they perform experiments on you. 😂 I love them all! So adorable!!!

id like to see if you got a figure of a different species of bird, to see how that compares and how they react to that. im curious about if they actually recognize that lawn ornament as a kea or if its a "oh this is a bird i dont know" type of response. i dont know if they would respond with similar fear and caution towards an actual new kea though! i dont have that info!

That would definitely be interesting to see! What would you think... include a pink flamingo, include an owl, and include a songbird? Or do you think it should be similar sizes and conformities to the kea themselves?

That could be really interesting! The store we bought these from also had some similar versions based on other New Zealand bird species, so it could be possible to design something around using those!

@@k.jespersen6145 something theyre familiar with, around the same size, that they interact with occasionally maybe? if its something like a flamingo, they probably wont understand that as a bird. its already not a real bird, so its gotta be something theyre more familiar with i think. a predator like an owl would, i assume, just stress them out. im not familiar with new zealand but are there other birds that are often around and compete for resources with keas? i think thatd be a good place to start

Hm, maybe this does show that they atleast somewhat know that their reflection [Is] them, while with the statue, since it has different features and isn't recognisable to the other kea, they think it is an intruder, as you said

Yeah, I felt that. The fact that the reaction was SO much stronger. I wonder if, at least, they recognised their friends’ reflections as their friends and so were more cool and unworried. Whereas these statues were definitely weird looking strangers

Inclined to jump straight to, "This is the kea 'uncanny valley' reaction." But that probably makes too many assumptions about how they think and how they equate mental models of themselves and other kea to world objects. Which of the kea was it who climbed up the fence and first reached down to tongue the head of the lawn ornament? I'd be especially interested in the continuing reactions of that guy. Additionally, it looked like the lawn ornament had the markings of a juvenile kea, so that makes me wonder (again) (sorry for the repeated question in the same vein) if you saw any division of reactions between juvenile and adult kea. Some kea and other birds have been raised in captivity using puppets in order to keep them from forming attachment to humans as food-givers. I wonder if those kea would be as unsettled by the lawn ornament, or if your kea would be this unsettled by a puppet. In the meantime, you have found an excellent way to keep your shoulders kea-free, as needed. Just attach a pair of kea-shaped shoulder guards. (Note to Self: Go looking for kea-shaped lawn ornaments available in U.S.)

It could well be an “uncanny valley” response, the ornament does appear just different enough from a real kea to be “wrong”. Looking at the difference between the adults and juveniles is certainly interesting here. Like the last mirror video, this all comes down to social / play behaviour, and when it comes to adults and juveniles it does seem that there is a bit of a split in their response. Loki was the one who was first to approach by climbing down the fence, I think he was also the one to interact the most overall (at was also Loki who knocked it off the log when we moved it there at the end). It’s possible that the adults are the first to respond in situations like this to check out the newcomer and make sure they’re safe for the juveniles. We would need to see much more of this though to be able to draw any proper conclusions. Maybe someone will want to design and run an experiment around this and the mirror in the future. The puppet-raised birds would also be interesting to look into more, would they have a wider window of what they accept as a “real kea”?

I got the same reaction from my lorikeets to a stuffed toy lorikeet & I saw another youtube channel try a stuffed toy cocky on a real cocky & same response there too, they just can't handle the close, but not right statues/images. Same thing with photos/drawings, fake one freaks them out, real photo & they're fascinated, even moreso than with the mirror in my case
