You might be aware that rust and corrosion inhibitors are an important part of preventing oxidation of both the base oil and metal surfaces - however these are surfactant-style molecules that adhere to surfaces. What of metals either suspended or solvated in the bulk oil? Metal passivators perform similar functions to corrosion inhibitors, expect they they render metals in the bulk oil inert.
