Wish there was a recommendation for a walker that is easy to get in and out of car. The rollator is too heavy. The aluminum walker doesn't steer well when walking a significant distance. I have to keep picking it up. Plus I can't carry anything with it.

Great video. My sister has had multiple sclerosis for almost 38 years and was using a Rollinator, but her gait was off and she had a hard time with the four wheels. Luckily, at a medical appointment I addressed it and we saw a PT and then her doctor put in an Rx for a standard walker with two wheels. Her gait has really improved (obviously) and it gives her more confidence in walking. I may buy one of those portable stools you can wear like a purse, because she gets very tired but cannot sit with her walker. I am always with her, so I try to time her outings. As a caregiver, I appreciate these types of videos so much! Thank you and Happy New Year.

All those questions are important as well as "How close to a flat surface can you get?" for cooking, working, and so on. Even loading and unloading the dishwasher. My Mom has an Upwalker that she adores. When I was on a walker, she offered me hers. I borrowed it for a test run, and first I couldn't see which side to walk it from. I tried it through my doorways, and it just barely cleared, like my sister's wheelchair barely fit without crushing my fingers. In addition, I could not maneuver the Upwalker close enough to the counter or table to cook or prepare, use the sink, use small appliances, or even use the stove. So that is a big concern. I didn't need to have all the bells and whistles, and I could most times find a seat or take a fold - up seat with me. So I returned it to Mom (who loves it and drives her kitty around while she exercises outdoors with it). Then I just used my standard aluminum one, and it gave me much more clearance, and I could get straight up to the counter and the table, and easily set it aside. And when I ride the bus, it's a snap to fold and fit in a seat or keep close by me on a side seat. And it fits in any vehicle of someone taking me somewhere. The aluminum walker can be adjusted like a cane, and just like a cane I can make it fit my stature so I can stand upright. I find that important. But I think 2 of the most important questions are, "How close can I get to surfaces?" and "What openings will I go through?"

I love my bariatric rollator!! Yes it is heavy and doesn't fit into my car. But when out walking I love it. I walk with friends at local semi-trail. I love the seat!!! It just makes things so easy. I generally only use it while outside walking for distance. Bad back gives out after about 20 minutes.

The one thing you did not address was height of the walker compared to the person. I have to use a walker because I have a balance problem. I am very short 5'1" therefore I had to find a walker that is not too high. The best way to size a walker is by having the handles bars and the hand brake at the person's hip. Higher or lower than that and the person is off balance. Otherwise they are reaching up or they are bent over, either way is exhausting. They should comfortably be able to walk upright between the handlebars. One more thing is that the back wheels need to be in alignment with the handle bars. If that back wheel sticks out to far the person can potentially catch their foot on them and fall. I tried out several different walker before I found one that suited my needs. Usually someone can't choose a walker for another person, the person who is to use the walker needs to have it sized for their own body.

@@francesmoreno5014 Yes I do have a lot of problems with my balance. That is why I use a walker. Your best way to make a choice when selecting a new walker is trying it out. Check for how well the brakes work for you and how it fits your physical body, such as height, strength, and your personal needs. When I first was learning how to use a walker, I was in a rehabilitation center after my first back surgery. They had several types of walkers and I found the best one for me. It was light enough for me to lift so I could get it into my car and the brakes helped me to get my balance when I stood up, sat down, or if I had to go down an inclined. Usually most durable medical equipment stores carry several types of walkers. They should let you try them to see if you like how they fit you and your specific needs. It will take time to get used to it but you will not be sorry about purchasing what you want and need. I found a lightweight walker that works well for me and balance problems. Essentially Medical Supplies has a walker that only weighs 8 pounds and has a removable wire basket. It is called "Featherlight." You can shop online and find it.

I’m an Occupational Therapist of 30 plus years and in my opinion PTs are the worst at fitting walkers, canes, and wheelchairs for Hospital use. I don’t know why this is the case but it seems that an OT will have to come back to the equipment and adjust it for the patient and as you know for the benefit of the patient while they’re using it in the hospital. This was very commonly noticed by me over the years and I often try to discuss this with the PT‘s and they did not want to openly have a conversation with me. I think because our time is very precious we often or actually the PTS often want to just take the device and work with the patient and then be done. I am currently not working as an OT due to medical reasons at this time. Please continue with your videos.

I am a retired PTA - Most of the walkers, crutches etc that pts were given where I worked were always given by ER personnel or nurses and they were always wrong. I also see ppl out in town with horribly fitted canes, crutches, walkers - ugh. Some pts even get devices themselves online or in stores and fit themselves. (hence crutches almost up to their nose lol!)

@@melissanordell1651 I should say this happened at the facility I worked at and the walkers and such were the hospitals or the rehab departments. I lift my Rollator in and out of the car using a strap that runs over the handle above the door. It works like a pulley, and does the heavy lifting for me, so I don’t have to try to lift with muscle power. It does mean the Rollator has to go in the backseat, not the trunk, but that’s OK. If I ever have someone with me who needs to ride in the backseat, he can put the Rollator in the trunk and get it back out.

So I got a forearm walker, however because of my scoliosis I struggle to hold both my arms at my side. I basically need a wider frame but honestly I can't find anything at all that can offer that level of adjustment. I hate using a wheelchair and I hate using a Mobility scooter, I feel so restrained and trapped. I want to walk, but need to be safe as well.

I have spondylolisthesis and stenosis (caused by the spondy, arthritis and dd); I was given one of those 4 wheeled walkers. I dont feel it helps me much as far as the pain. Would the taller one with the arm rests help with the pain? I do use a shopping cart in the grocery store but if its a bad pain day, that really doesn't help. A cane sometimes helps but I also have wrist arthritis so end up with painful wrists when relying on that to walk. I hate the thought of using a wheel chair but sitting is about the only thing that takes the pain away. I can make 5 to 10 mins of walking before pain and numbness kicks in.

Can you speak to the issue of being non weight bearing on a foot x 3-4 months following surgery. i am practicing as I have extreme food pain now. Tolieting, and turning to sit down on the commode, then rising is near impossible without touching the floor. What is the best technique.

Unfortunately my physio has now deemed me unsafe to use a walking stick now and I've been promoted to using a 4 wheel rollator. Only thing is my balance is really bad and I tend to swerve my walker side to side.

I have a rollator as it enables me to sit down (I have Fibromyalgia), but it is a tight fit when sitting. I was told by my orthopaedic surgeon to use hiking sticks instead of a rollator or crutches as they force you to stand upright and therefore prevent wastage of the lower back muscles. They do kill the rotator cuffs though due to where the weight distribution occurs.

Does she live alone or does have a person that can lift the walker for her. I shopped around for a walker to suit my needs. I am very short 5'1" tall and live alone. So I needed a walker for shorter stature one that I would be able to lift and put into my car. If you are able to lift a heavier walker then there are manufacturers who specialize in heavy duty wider walkers with seats. Google has been a good resource of information for me. The manufacturers also usually can provide a person who can answer your questions and help find a good walker for your mom.

There is a rollator online that doesn’t have armrests but does have higher arm height 40”. IT is amazing!!! Love it. The majority of the rollators are 35+” which is too small in height per my respiratory therapist. My respiratory therapist also didn’t recommend the arm rest rollators, because the majority of people don’t stand up straight with it.
