How Do I Pay Off Debt When I Can't Afford The Minimum Payments?

So first here is how I know that this information works, I paid off around $13,000 in credit card debt in less than 6 months, so I know this is going to work for you because I’m not special.
This video is going to work for the person that owes so much money they can't afford the minimum payments which are usually 1% of the balance, interest and fees. When it's $38, its not a big deal, but when you have a few credit cards and it's like in the hundreds you start to feel it

1. Talk to Your Creditor ( you know whats worst than someone not paying you on time, someone never paying you )
-Understand these not collateral loans, if you chose not to pay, they cant come after any of your assets ( however your credit will take a hit, and we want to pay back our debts )
First Ask for Free things:
-Explain what's going on, I cant afford these payments, I’m going to keep missing them and eventually default and potentially go into collections
-What program or offer do you guys have to help me pay back this money
-I recommend you try this with at least 3 reps if the first 2 suck ( they are going to offer you interest pause, minimum payment reductions and maybe a few more things )
Settlements: what you know they can do
-Lump-sum ( note on your score about this )
-Workout agreement ( lowering interest, pausing interest, waiving fees, and even reducing the minimum payment; however they pay close your account )
-Hardship agreement
2. Gather all the info on your debt
The worst thing on this planet is being stressed and not knowing where to get started
So you need to gather all the information before you make a plan
Here is what you want to find out
5 key questions:
-who do you owe
-how much do you owe
- how much is the interest
-what is the minimum payment
-and if you can write down what you borrowed the money for
3. Decide on a Strategy
First: Have a Budget ( Live on the essentials for awhile, Shelter, utilities, groceries and transportation, make it simple, if you don’t need it to live don’t buy it, and if you don’t need it and you own sell it )
Second : avalanche method or snowball method (method) and by when will you pay it off (goal), and set up automatic payments (habit)
Third: Get another job and use that extra money towards the debt

CREDIT! I agree with not putting more debt back on a card after paying it off, but in my experience some of the creditors have closed my cards for not using them. Others have lowered my credit limit for non-use or for not using them enough. Both of those things hurt my credit score. It's like they don't want you to be responsible with your credit, they just want you to rack up more and more debt so you're stuck paying them forever. I just can't win, lol.

What jt4261 said. Use your cards to pay for what is in your budget, ie; based on your income. Then use your income to pay them off BEFORE the statement closing date. Within a few months, you'll start to see your score rise. And some card issuers will automatically raise your limit. You just have to discipline your habits.

I don't know if you actually tried this, but I did with Cap One and B of A- the best I got was a one month delay on my current payment, which doubled the next month- pushing me further into debt. Neither were interested in long term solutions, did not seem to care if I defaulted, which is what happened. I just quit paying because I had no other options due to minimums that grew sky high and made it impossible to keep up. I'm just waiting for them to do their charge-offs, then deal with collection agencies, where I will probably pay 5 cents to each dollar owed if they can prove they actually own the debt.

I'm starting it now and from what I can tell your balance will drop every month and it's more than if you make minimum payment or little more than minimum payment. It works better if you do one credit card at a time but you can do more than one at a time. Hope this helps someone.

many times, the regular reps that answer customer service don't have the authority to do anything much. That's ok, just ask to speak to their supervisor and maybe THEIR supervisor if necessary. I found years ago that one credit card company had a 'special handling department' and only THEY could do anything. They were however great to work with. they eliminated any future interest, and we agreed on a monthly amount to pay back that I could live with and it all went to the balance with no more interest being added on. It took me 4 years to pay it back, and taught me that indeed, on non-collateralized loans, they definitely want to get at least most of their money back somehow! DO get all agreements in writing or emails. get the names of any people you work with and write down the date, time, person, and phone # or department you reached. keep a diary of your contacts, messages, payments you made, (when, how you paid and how much and did it get credited!), until you get to zero balance and get a statement from them that you owe nothing more and the debt is considered paid in full by them and reported to the credit bureaus as, " paid as agreed". We negotiated a new agreement each year, and I got copies or e-mails of everything as we went and kept the files all together. you can do this with multiple creditors, and the ones that are most difficult will get paid last if at all and tell them so, that you are first paying off the ones you can get the best terms from, and that your finances are in rough shape and there may not be enough to go around for everybody! The snowball method is golden.! You get rid of the smallest quickest to pay off ones, shred them and don't get into debt ever again! It's easier to keep track of your money when you don't have all these accounts everywhere. all you need is one debit card and lots of free savings/ checking accounts for different purposes/ expenses/ maintenance funds, etc. nobody ever got rich off of rewards cards, if you can pay it with interest in the future whether you like it or lump it, then pay yourself first and save up the money ahead of purchasing stuff! what a concept!. think of multiple accounts at your bank as your 'online envelope system' Works great! Peace and eventual wealth to all of you.

100 % correct. There’s no avalanche or snowball method that can help when a person can barely make the minimum payments on high interest CC with large balances. It’s a bottomless pit where you keep on making minimum payments and making no dent on the balance (even my CC statements stated that it would take me over 20 yrs to pay off the balance if I continued just making minimum payments on my cards) The only thing that saved my sanity and helped me get out of debt was velocity banking. I had zero cash flow and most of my CC were maxed out, but by doing the velocity banking method my debt now stands at half of what it was a year ago. It works!

I had 7 credit card debt now I only have 1 and its very easy to pay back and it helps my credit score. I did it in 12 months.

You don’t need a credit score, I closed down all my credit cards once I understood that

Good advice for a small amount of debt. My problem is I used credit cards to buy inventory for my business & now owe so much I can`t pay it back.

Hello! I love hearing you! Well, I had my own practice as a counselor. Stopped working because I have long Covid. My husband started a program called National Debt Reliefa year ago or so. They were going to call all credit cards I owed. For some reason I have been sued, they didn’t send it to the collection office. We are in a very bad situation and don’t know what to do.

This year is the most debt I have ever had :/ I was jobless for almost 4 months and I was using credit cards to get by. Now I have a job and I can make minimum payments but after I do that I’m left with zero cash flow. I’m honestly hoping we have overtime soon. As much as I don’t like doing OT I really need to do it for at least 2 to 3 months and then it be smooth sailing. Sometimes i just want to throw the towel but I can’t. I got myself into this now i must get myself out. Thanks for your advise

HOW TO ACTUALLY GET BAD MARKS OFF YOUR CREDIT REPORT you send them a certified letter demanding an agreement to payoff terms, and demanding that once you pay them off they WILL remove the marks from your report within 30 days. when you get the agrement letter back agreeing to the terms, THEN pay them...if they dont remove the bad marks after 30 days...DISPUTE the bad marks and send copies of the promise letter of debt paid off that you got back from the debtors to the 3 agencies and BAM!! bad marks off...100% Guaranteed EVERY time....THIS is what all those credit repair people wanna charge you 300 bucks to learn.....your welcome.
