I am willing to bet that he pays near minimum wage but expects them to work like they make 25.00 an hour. I see this with companies all the time. They want 5 star workers on .5 star pay. You truly get what you pay for. You pay minimum wage, you get minimum work. Minimum wage is like saying I would pay you less, but it's against the law.

The flip side for going to university can also happen so people aren’t able to get jobs in their chosen field and they therefore have to work in minimum wage jobs. I know of several people I’ve previously worked with that have masters degrees but they have to work in retail or in a takeaway because there’s no work in their chosen fields.

Its good that this manager recognizes that his own staff is burnt out too, sometimes that gets overlooked when the people up top are too detached from their people. We've seen in our industry too that hiring just to hire can actually set yourself back because you take away from your business to spend all the time to train and develop people that don't end up cutting it.

I can chime in on this... it’s the restaurant industry in general. I’ve worked in it for over 15 years and it was getting progressively worse with time. It’s horrible pay, horrible hours, no benefits, dealing with horrible people. It’s going to take a toll on you. No one wants to work in restaurants cause there is really no compensation for dealing with it. You mention raise the price. You can only raise prices so much before it effects you negatively by discouraging guests to eat at your restaurant. Yeah every little bit helps but to get to the point where all the help will be earning a decent living wage your menu prices will price you out of business. A bit of advise get out while you’re still young enough you can start a new career. It’s going to be tough for a couple years until you get on your feet but you’ll be 10x happier in the long run

We have worked with many recruitment companies over the years and what we found is the secret to getting and far more importantly retaining staff is to offer more than the guy down the road. That means a higher hourly rate, it means more training with a clear career progression, it means a better team atmosphere. Have you tried asking any of the leavers why they left? have you spoken to your current team to see if there is anywhere you need to improve? Maybe with your team, it is as simple as pay, if you are only offering the same hourly rate as everyone else then how can you stand out? maybe it is culture, maybe you need to work on how the team is treated? the point is you won't know until you actually start asking.

It's the middle of a pandemic, most people don't want to work in an industry that pays very little and offers good chances to get the virus from someone. Restaurants aren't doing well so tips are going to be down, so who would want to be a server? Service industries in general are going the way of the dinosaur and restaurants are a tough business to begin with. If there's one thing this pandemic is showing, it's basically that if your job can't adapt to go remote or online you aren't going to have a job or a business in a few months. If he raises prices he's going to lose out on sales. Food is so competitive and with people pinching pennies right now, raising prices would finish him off.

I’m sure there are topics that Dave is facing or deciding on that aren’t discussed on his show about his own company.... like hiring freezes, bonus reductions, reduced hours, change in medical benefits, 401k matching, etc in order to be more cost effective in today’s market

I would say that as the owner you do not need to be in operations. You delegate and create systems that run themselves. Have the right people in place to do this. If the systems are in place you can pop in every now and then to ensure the business is healthy than the rest of the time you can do whatever you want!

you can't be lazy and deal with new hires it's fun. with serve staff or beginner level workers you have to expect turn around but great thing about kids is they only know what YOU show them expect great things and bring to task the daily managers because if workers have bad habits you showed them those habits. best hiring model I've seen is UPS they hire pretty much all an temp basis and after the term only keep who meets what they want it's like a assembly line. the best management system in business is McDonalds corp. they have the training and everythings S.M.A.R.T. the franchise owners can be inept and the managers they hire can be borderline incompetent but as long as you follow their corporate top down training. dont tolerate behavior that's not to standard and make sure standards are perfectly clear

Of the 60% that did show up for the interview about 20% either didn't show up for their first day or just weren't a good candidate/wanted more than we could offer. The rest were a toss up.

Here's the answer: you get burned out. You do. Then, you get up and keep going to work. You get burned out and work anyway. Or you start applying for more refreshing jobs, or start adjusting the attitude that work should bring some fulfillment or joy other than money. Nope. Get that during your playtime. Get your money now at work. Any other option is a luxury. Work burned out. Just keep showing up even if not at your best. Take it from a Mom who has lots of very little kids and a budding business and a home to take care of. You think I have the luxury of getting burned out on parenting, providing for, feeding or comforting!?! News flash: not a chance. I live burned out most of the time. I'm lucky to shower more than twice a week because I forget to while I'm falling asleep in my toddlers' rocking chair at night and I don't have time in the scramble to school / homeschool / work. I wake up between 11pm and 1 am, finish dishes, or laundry, and work on my business goals until 2 - 4 am. Then I nap and wake the kids at 6 for breakfast. My husband helps with lunches and drinks for them and breakfast while I get them ready. Then he prepares for his full time job. Even as a team, all we're going on is steam. We've been burned out since my 3rd high risk pregnancy and my 2nd deadly birth. Grow up. Get over your emotions and, as my dad says, "let your commitments run your life instead of your feelings". Sorry to be harsh but I wish we had the luxury of burning out. Not a chance. Get burned out. Let that be ok. Work anyway, even burned out. My kids need me anyway no matter what mood I'm in even if I'm in a funk. Work anyway.

@@PlzPr3sspl4y good question ;) Don't believe the hype. Birth control's not nearly as effective as advertised. Finally got my hubs to have the procedure after all that which solves one problem. Now we just have to raise the rest to solve their own. Lead by example, right? Nah - part of our issue is actually that we want the best for our kids and are only willing to accept less for a temporary time frame while we're willing to work to build it up. For instance, we live in a less than stellar neighborhood so they can go to good schools - a conscious choice we made knowing it would mean working and struggling - a responsibility we did not take lightly or foolheartedly, a commitment we made when we married that no matter what life might surprise us with, we'd lean in, buckle down, and pull up. Plus, we are ambitious, creative, and lucky to have the opportunities we do. We feel grateful and that's why it's an honor to struggle or sacrifice. I don't mean to troll this question. I was just feeling snarky. The person is asking an honest question and when I felt that way while working for somebody else, it usually was a clue that I needed a fresh challenge. I hope the caller felt satisfied with the answer and I hope they find something they can put their heart into soon with much success.
