How Do Hungarian People React To Black Forigner? 🇭🇺

Travelling solo in a Hungarian town called Fertőd. I started my journey in Fertőd which is a town located in the Győr-Moson-Sopron county of Hungary. I wanted to discover more about this random town and the atmosphere because my travels are not so much based upon the known cities or the touristic places. I like to get a feel of the life outside the bigger cities and unknown places where tourists don't go. I went to visit a small local market on the side of a road where the sellers set up stalls and they was selling Hungarian food seasonings, wild animal skin, alcohol, food, wooden baskets and traditional handmade items. While I was buying fridge magnet from the local seller he had told me with loads of information about the things he was selling and his family background in the business making traditional Hungarian objects which he told me they had been handmade was in Transylvania. I decided to get my self fridge magnets as souvenirs. I tour the town go to the shop get a beer and then make my way into the next village where I discover there were some old houses from the UNESCO world heritage. Join me on this journey to see how it goes.

Hey André! I hope you enjoyed your time in Hungary! :) Unfortunately, many Hungarians don't speak foreign languages - especially the older people. But that isn't your fault. And these situations can be really funny (or awkward, it depends on the point of view :D) Anyway, Hungary has a lot of beautiful places - Fertőd is one of them. If you love travelling, come back sometime and discover it bravely. :)

A general comment and suggestion: - Hungarians are nice but proud people and do not like to be put into a situation where they feel dumb. When you speak English to someone who does not understand it is very unpleasant as they feel they are being seen as dumb - in addition Hungarians are shy so filming them without permission is not nice - it is not a bazaar, you are expected to buy. If you do not whant to buy just looking (and recording) you shall tell the lady. As a general rule in Hungary you do not touch a product unless you intend to buy it (just out of curiousity do not touch it) So I can assure you everyone feels very uncomfortable in such a sitation: not understanding what you whant and being filmed how "dumb" they are. People are not rude only they would like to avoid and escape from such a frustrating situation.

To all the people suggesting the older lady was being rude, We English have a terrible disease of the mind that makes us believe that wherever we go, people should talk English back to us, or understand our language. Even worse, when somebody doesn't understand, we even belittle them further by saying it again in English but with the accent of the other person, as if it would help them to understand. I am sorry there are so many ignorant English people out there that do this. We have been separated by water on our Island and we are not as interconnected as those in Europe. But this is no excuse! Our language spread worldwide so we became lazy and wrongfully believed others will automatically speak our language. Andre is not rude and speaks a lot more language than the average Brit! But in this case whilst it makes entertaining viewing I would consider it rude (not illegal) to film interactions!

We Hungarians can learn English or any other language with great difficulty. Many people say that Chinese and Hungarian are the most difficult languages in the world to learn. If a Hungarian native speaker wants to learn English / or any other language /, it is just as difficult for us to learn a foreign language as it is for a foreigner to learn English. I studied English myself for years and I can't speak English, if someone speaks English slowly with simple words, I understand it. Young people speak a foreign language. But not enough. At school, it is compulsory to study one foreign language for 8 years and another foreign language for 4 years. A law was passed 10 years ago that only those who have passed an intermediate level language exam can get a university degree. This law has just been abolished because most of the graduates did not receive their diplomas due to the lack of language skills. Many politicians, artists and celebrities lie that they speak a foreign language and become the subject of public ridicule because it turns out that they do not speak a foreign language... Some people live a life in foreign countries without learning the language of that country. I have a childhood friend who worked in England for 9 years and doesn't even speak English today... A doctor friend of mine has an intermediate level language exam, he thought he would be able to communicate with patients and colleagues in Great Britain and it turned out that he didn't understand a word of what he said people speak /Glasgow / . A lot of comedies and jokes arise from the way we speak, or we get confused when people speak to us in a foreign language, education and politics have failed in this regard in Hungary.

17:40 Well, I happen know beers to some degree. Get wine instead, as light beer in Hungary is generally too thin and bitter, especially compared to Czech beer. Some imported beer can be found cheaper and tastier. The Steffl you drank is one of the cheaper imports, it's from Austria, it's alright but a little thin IMHO. However, I can recommend craft breweries like Szent András Sörfőzde and especially Pannonhalmi Apátság. They are expensive, but you're in for a treat. The wheat beer of Szarvasi Sörfőzde was a good experience for me and it's cheaper.

The good thing about Hungary and its people is that they are not racist, they don`t look or treat anyone differently than they would do on their own as long as you respect them and treat them openly. @@pelagonianlion8276 I'll post it here too: Bless your heart, speak Hungarian instead of photographing around like that. What are you looking for, this one? You gotta' spread this one, all of these. Then she's asking the rough-looking dude to translate but he doesn't speak English. Then she keeps asking what are you looking for and to speak Hungarian (lol). Then asks the younger employee: is he taking photos of me, you think? Is this guy paying for all the stuff? Rough dude says of course (lol). She asks the rough dude: where did you pick up this beauty (referring to André lolololol)? By the way I think she was more nervous than rude.

Thanks fellas. Btw I've been to Hungary. Great country. The language was over the top of my head. Most people in the shops didn't know English, so i understand what Andre went through. But that is fair enough for the Hungarians. It's their country and we should adapt to them when visiting.

Your skin is not a problem, but shooting a video without permission and showing everything, but not paying for anything is unpolite too. Szia is hello in Hungarian, but only for friends the same age as you or younger. When you talk to people who can be your parents by age, you should be more respectful. Jó napot kívánok, viszontlátásra, kérem szépen, köszönöm szépen are the essential words for you.

Listen man! I am not even from Hungary but why would the video have then this name as a title. Al this people in the video are super friendly. Personnaly i wouldn't like it when a complete stranger start filming me without asking! Doesn't matter what skincolor indeed. And then leaving with saying see ya! Sounds almost the same as Szia that even for a foreigner from your country sounds to me like there a joke to him. And giving bear to a hommeles guy, i don't know if we really really help the hommeles with that. Listen maybe i am tottaly wrong with my feelings but the vibe of this guy makes me very unconfortable towards these people.

Even as a Hungarian it took me about 20 seconds to understand that it is the old castle of Fertőd. :D I was laughing soooo much even, my cigarette went out :D Not about the content, but how you pronounced the name of the castle/city. :) I know Hungarian names, or words can be hard, but this was great! I have fellow co-workers from oversees, even after a few years, it is hard for them to say a simple word like Csaba, correctly :D Gránátosház was absolutely correct. That was on the point! I love how you did this video! It is only 6:53 AM, but you already set me in the best mood! Thank you!

Yes. Gránátosház you said really good, great job! But Fertőd .. i should read to know what you mean :D you say in hungarian like Förtod, but no judging:) if you want to say it well, "e" is like first letter from "envilop" when you say. And "ő" is like long version as you say now the "e". :) but not bad, just if you wanna pronounce it better, then you can try ;) but God, "Isten" in Hungarian was perfect. Once you say a letter a way, in Hungarian you say the same way in every word. Really great video, as you were behaving with people, thx bro, take care!

Hi André! Your explanations were mostly correct but the town you were in is called not Fertod but Fertőd, like the "u" in the word curse. And you were definitely wrong in saying that you were drinking a Hungarian beer. The brand Steffl comes from Austria. You would have bought Soproni. The name comes from one of the most beautiful Hungarian towns situated at the Austrian border where this kind of beer is brewed. By the way you were very close to Sopron, apr. 17 miles away..

The home blessing fridge magnet you bought translates to: "Where there is faith, there is love, Where there is love, there is peace, Where there is peace, there is blessing, Where there is blessing, there is God, Where there is God, there is no need." The Steffl beer you bought is one of the cheaper beer brands. Generally if the beer has corn in it then there is a chance that it is made of lower quality ingredients. Unfortunately the education of languages is quite low in Hungary and because of the laws of the current government (no need of language degree for the university degree) it is decreasing even in the universities. The lady in the supermarket was quite grumpy, I guess she isn't too motivated about her job and the communication barriers + the presence of the homeless guy made she a bit frustrated :D
