Hungarians have a different culture. They don't smile at strangers and they find it rude qhen you approach them or talk to them if it is not strictly necessary. The never ask "how are you?" Because it is a private question you ask to your spose and he/she is sick or to your children. They don't smile while they are working or minding their own business the Hungarian smile only comes when they all see their children or someone important to them. Hungarians are very direct and they rarely greet someone, they just say something if it is important for you to know that. I'm not Hungarian, I am Italian but I have visited Hungary a few times, I speak the language (not very well) and I know quite a few Hungarians. Hungary is beautiful and also its people, the culture is just different as it should be in every country. I hope it helps!

Don't worry about it. I'm a white Englishman and I didn't find Budapest very friendly, either.

Hi! I'm not sure if it's still a question, but I may have an answer to the café problem: a lot of bigger places accept table reservations, and New York Café most definitely does. Maybe they had a reservation. It's not necessarily the case, but that's my best bet. Also, here service is expected to be polite, not friendly, and they don't hover. Most Hungarians would get the creeps from a server constantly being around and smiling, it gives serial killer wibes. Also, people are generally not "friendly" here. We have close friends we laugh with, and we don't really interact with strangers most of the time (not even other Hungarians). Actually we often find Americans weirdly chipper ;) So talking to random people on the street is weird. It's mostly a generational trauma from when the country was under Soviet control: you never knew who was reporting to the secret police about what nasty things you said about the government. Other comments also mentioned the general political situation wich unfortunatelly did make the general xenophobia more exaggerated. Still, I hope this experience didn't ruin your trip to here!

Man, im Hungarian living in Australia for the last 40 years and i feel unwelcome when i visit !! Hungarians are tough on the outside but once you get to know them, they are pretty welcoming and hospitable. They are also pretty up front and won't stand for bullshit. On the flipside, Americans have very high expectations regarding service from what they are used to at home. Dont expect that you will get the same everywhere you go.

I am noticing increasing hate. I have been harassed in Szeged 3 times in a week. I am literally traumatized. I am Indian. Dnt knw how i wl cmplt my studies.

As a Hungarian, I am sad to hear that. I have to admit, it can be a strange situation sometimes for an Indian, because the local Hungarians might assume you are local Gypsy, based on skin color only. And as the local Gypsies are committing most of the petty and violent crimes, that assumption is sadly a negative one. If you go with Hungarian friends, they can defuse the situation easily. Also, if you are alone, if you start to speak in Indian accented English, or Indian accented Hungarian, the local Hungarians will immediately realise the error of their assumption. Hungary have never had any historical conflict with India, we do not have anything against the people of India.

There is no inherent negative attitude from Hungarians towards the people of India. I think the few negative experiences might come from local Hungarians, based on skin color only, making the assumption about the Indian being local Gypsy. And local Gypsies commit most of the petty and violent crimes. But as soon as Indian people start talking, the Hungarian locals realise the error. @@lavista4u

You must understand that there is a lot of friction within Europe at the moment concerning the subject of immigration. Many people may have assumed that you are an immigrant. You may have had different experiences if you had identified yourself as a tourist, but that may have created other problems of course.

That’s not an excuse to be treating foreigners especially people of color badly, you should be ashamed writing this stuff, tourists shouldn’t be caring about the political landscape of a country they visit, as a Turkish man I don’t like Hungarians much, they are cold and lack simple social skills, considering that my country houses more refugees than Hungary ever will, this gentleman would have been treated much better in Turkey. Hungary is a country I will never visit again. The country is beautiful, the people are not, the word hospitality cannot be found in their vocabulary.

im an arab who grew up in budapest. hungarians, especially in the rural area gonna make u feel how ur not wanted. i speak hungarian with 0 accent, yet everytime i interact with white people, just by the look they give, i feel like a foreigner. i only get along with black people and gypsies

Last summer I was in Budapest for 2 weeks like It so much I stayed a month. Everyone’s experiences will always be different.

The Hungarian's can be rude and quite glum looking, but can open up a little once you spend even time around them, I've been told the one's in the countryside are much nicer as well. Some black people have had positive things to say, guy's even go as far as saying the local women are staring and seem quite keen on them, they're pretty used to tourists coming and going a lot though, and can be pretty indifferent about it.

Then again, I felt he was a strange person, and my experience in Budapest is generally pleasant actually, but I've never stayed there for longer than a week. I do feel they can be glum looking though, but people living in big cities can be because it's so crowded and busy.

I definitely feel like the country suffers some type of trauma from the wars and what its gone through through the years. I wouldn’t take it personal. I’m currently in Budapest right now and approaching my 5th day and haven’t had the warmest interaction with any of the locals. However I still see the beauty in the country.

I think Hungarians are not friendly. I'm in Serbia now and met a bunch of them in the park. I asked them in Hungarian where they are from? They answered but showed no friendliness whatsoever. Serbs are much friendlier.

Im sorry you felt this way. Older folks in hungary tend to be more distant and judging against foreigners and anyone who looks different from them.They are just not used to it as Hungary is not very multy cultural and it was even less back in the day and lot of brainwashing is going on aswell. And lot of the working people are tense and unsatisfied with their lifes lately so they can take it out on others during work. But lot of kind and welcoming folks aswell it just depends on who you come across during your travel. Wish you the best! hey bro, i first saw a video on budapest from "a live with david" channel. the city is so beautiful. he visited this large thermal pool area and i thought it looked so fun. but i noticed... not even ONE brown or black person in the pool and there was at least 100 people there. i would be nervous to enter. he did also say that he found the people to be either really nice or really unfriendly (he is a fair skinned guy from texas). being that im from seattle, the place dubbed "seattle freeze," it may feel just like home to me. I heard the weather was similar at least.

Hi! Hungarian here! So, first of all, Hungary has no colonizing roots, so the population is quite monolithic - basically you get the shades of white Europians most of the time. Of course big cities like Budapest or Debrecen are still "world cities", so you'll find a lot more diversity there from people coming to work to college students to tourists, but still, the majority is white. Second, the culture is very different. People here are more xenophobic than racist, it's just that white people have to speak before they get the "foreigner" label. Still, as a tourist I wouldn't worry about unpleasant incidents, just keep in mind that people won't be smiling on the street or randomly start to talk. And that's true for Hungarians as well, we just usually mind our own business and won't bother with others'. Greeting someone on the street will get you weird look, it's just not a thing to talk to strangers unless you're asking for direction or something. I've also heard that we tend to "stare", looking at people for a longer time than they're usually comfortable with, but as a local I don't really notice that X'D Service culture is also supposedly very different, here the staff won't just smile all the time and they don't hover. We expect respect and politeness from both the workers and the customers, but we might find an overly friendly attitude offputting. Also, a lot of older people don't speak languages, so depending on the area you're in you might have trouble with comunication (in big cities most establishments providing service will have staff who can speak English, but don't expect it from the rando on the street). Of course actually living here is another topic altogether, and I'm not familiar with it, but I would imagine that it could be dificult to fit in. But as a tourist, I would just be careful about the usual things - pickpockets on the public transport, money exchange scams (seriously, the automats are a joke), taxi scams and the ridiculously overpriced tourist trap food places. I'm obviously very biased, but I think Hungary is worth visiting as there are a lot of beutiful things to see ^-^

Went there before , absolutely terrible how they treat people . Won’t be going back even if I’m paid to.

Americans and even people from other western countries or idk "friendly" countries find Hungarians rude because they are very reserved and they never smile or say "please". It is just theri culture, a fake smile or fake friendlyness is seen as something fake and bad in Hungary. Hungarians are very direct and they don't like to interact with strangers.

Sorry to hear about that. I've had a couple of instances like that in France but kept it moving. Right now I am more focused on the Caribbean and Colombia at the moment but will return to Europe in time. At least you had a positive experience with another American. I was there 2 weeks ago. I’m a white, friendly and personable female and found the locals to be truly awful. Rude, angry, unfriendly- even the hotel receptionist was an ass. Told me to “just Google it when I asked about laundry.” Couldn’t find anything redeeming about Hungarian people.

Closing up the early days of communism (1898 - Bel Kun) then followed by the nazis and then the hardcore communism. To them, it will take at least 100 years to catch up with themselves, and I don`t think it will happen peacefully. I think this country will break into a much smaller part soon, as there has been too much injustice over public assets, taxpayers' funds, and over genocides that the nazi collaborators and communists initiated in the country. They are still in shock and once the social conditioning is gone, their people will start realizing what has been done to their loved ones, ancestors, and so on. In case of Hungary it's just that people are cold to strangers in general (except tourism industry but they get money out of you). So not too many people will be hyped around a foreigner/tourist. And to be honest, people can tell by just looking at him that he is an outsider.

In restaurants usually you have to book a table. New Your Café is a very touristy place so I think all of the tables was reserved. Most of us are not racist and I'm sure that your bad experiences are not related to racism.

Thanks for watching David. While at New York Cafe, it was around 3pm, and I looked around the restaurant and was at about 25% capacity, ample seating. My interaction here didn't really stand out until similar things kept happening at different bars, restaurants, and even the Budapest museum. Additionally, I never said racist, I just said not welcomed. I'm from the U.S and dealing with people not liking you simply because of your skin color I'm kind of used to, so I try to avoid using that as an excuse. Again, I met some nice people and hung out with locals, I was just highlighting that during that entire month trip, it just felt Budapest was the least welcoming

I think you would definitely enjoy yourself. I do recommend everyone to visit, it is indeed a beautiful country. I visited 5 countries during this trip and Budapest just kind of stood out more than the others in terms of friendliness. Then again, that was just my experience. I guarantee you'll definitely love it. You should definitely do a weekend in Slovakia. It's a nice contrast to Budapest, and so much open space! Enjoy your trip, be sure to let me know how it goes! Hungarians aren't racist. Of course there are racist people in Hungary but Hungarians are just very reserved and they just don't have a costumer service culture. In Hungary the costumer isn't always right. Anyone who shouts/ talks to them for no important reason/ greet them is just being rude to them (that's pretty much their instinct) so yeah they won't great you

I am Italian and everytime I go to Hungary I fewl very welcome, you just have to learn how to respect them (no shouting, no bulshitting, avoid being extra friendly or smiling for no reason, don't say how are you and learn how to speak the language at a decent level and they'll fewl more at ease around you instead of looking at you in a weird way)

We do not know what will be the end of the war raging in the neighboring country. You can't plan because everything is uncertain. Nervous. But Budapest is still beautiful now.

Yeah I live in the U.S and the word racism is literally just thrown around and even weaponized by a certain political party that could careless about combating it, so I try my best to avoid labeling places and people. It's crazy because that happened to me three times!!! The third time, I actually went shopping and bought some nice clothes and shoes, and even made a reservation, but nope "sorry sir, we can't honor your reservation, were overbooked" SMH. I went to Budapest recently with my cousin on June 1st-5th, 2023. Coming from an East Asian background, we felt unwelcome, and that developed our opinions that Hungarians are racist. It's only a few Hungarians are friendly. Maybe I should visit there again as solo to get more perspective.

It's not racism. There are just countries that not really like foreigners other than the tourist industry. And in some countries people are just cold towards strangers in general. Also if you only were in the capital, Budapest, then that's also a different question. People in the capital are even more cold towards strangers/outsiders. Just because people not going up to you like as if you were some world famus celebrity that not means "racism".

Well, that's a cultural thing. We Hungarians do not smile. We are serious here. Even when we are joking. Really. Hungarians also hate colours, you won't see too many cars that are not on the white-grey-black scale. Hungarians speak soft and the language is spoken with a very flat intonation. All these make foreigners believe we are grim.

Thank you for commenting. I've been waiting for some Hungarians to chime in. That's a very good point you brought up. That's exactly why I'm not quick to rush to judgement and willing to go back to try at least one more time. Very interesting. That thought did cross my mind, however it was just a little surreal for me. It especially didn't hit me hard until after Slovakia. Literally everyone told me that the Slovaks we're racist and not to go, and I went, and it was awesome. I tried to choose my words very carefully because I still want everyone interested to go and Travel to Budapest because maybe it was just my experience. Thank you again for chiming in. Cheers 🍻

I visited hungary (not just budapest) and people were mainly nice and open minded. Oh and i didnt see a single racist person too. Idk why you say this but based on my experience i can say its not true

In Hungary, in some (in fact, in a lot of) restaurants or shops, the unfriendly behaviour of the staff is the relic of the Communist past, when they got paid a fix salary by the state, irrespective of customer satisfaction, or irrespective of even if they sold anything or not. Of course, the economic situation is totally different now and this attitude is counter-productive in a Capitalist environment, but since it is human behaviour, it changes real slowly. If you go more to the East, for example to Russia, you will find they are outright rude to customers there. In commerce, in transactional situations, this happens with locals: no fake Western commercial smiles and asking how do you do, when they actually don't care. BUT! In a personal situation, however, the behaviour of the people changes. Like when the lady, after 5 minutes of conversation with you as total strangers, invited you to go to party with her and her daughter to celebrate her diploma. I hope you accepted the invitation. In such situations, if you go with the flow, you can easily make life-long friend with Hungarians. @@CultureShockAddict

I wouldn't let my experience deter you. Even more, the city is absolutely GORGEOUS and definitely recommend at least experiencing and seeing the city yourself. Your experience and interactions with the locals may be a lot better than mine was, you never know. At worst, visit for a few days, and if you love it, stay longer, if not, you have several other countries a quick train ride away!! Thank you for watching Riley! Cheers! 🍻

Im sorry that you did not feel welcomed. But please dont let one bad experience give you a bad image of the whole country. Im not white too and ive been to hungary for more than a month (i visited budapest, pécs, miskolc, szeged, győr, debrecen) and i never saw anyone who was racist. And the people in hungary seemed more friendly and open minded than in the other countries i visited. I think people in other cities are more friendly than in budapest. Im not saying budapest citizens are unfriendly but definitely less friendly than people in other cities. Also i know you can read a lot about "what hungarians are like" but neither of these is true. Howewer the only one that is true is that not many of them speaks english. But anyways i never felt like hungarians are rude or anything, i dont believe anything bad about a countrys people in general. Like i also dont believe that people in uk are ugly.

Just back from there. One of the nicest cities iv seen maybe the nicest. However the people there were shocking in there attitude. They depend on us to keep there economy going.

If you just learn one Hungarian phrase, such as "Jo Napot" (Yo napot) which means "Good day" then Hungarians automatically open up to you.

I agree, I should have studied more Hungarian before arriving. When traveling, I am extremely friendly and because it makes for great KZread comment, but even more it helps me because I'm naturally an introvert, so I force myself out of my shell, and even so, it was still just a off vibe. Idk what it was. I'm willing to go back and give it another shot because the country is absolutely breathtaking. Thank you for watching Mardom! Cheers 🍻

yes their are racist people in hungary and budapest just like there is racist in every country and city in world...but its ignorant to call an entire nation racist. In budapest they could care less what race you are it helps if you try and speak the language but also in tourist areas people arent super friendly since they are all hustling to get money

If you are dark skinned be careful in places like Hungary, they have an influence of Russian right wing populism and Orban plays into that very well. Even the EU wants to take away their membership due to alarming hate

Meanwhile they are undesirable parasites and immigrants in western Europe living off the economies of rich EU nations. Their main exports are body selling women, pickpockets, human trafficking and general crimes. Kick them out of EU now!

And stop calling it Central European, it is nothing but an ex soviet Eastern European dictatorship controlled by Russia but surviving on EU funds. It could be taken off the map and no one will notice.
