Why shouldn't a cosplayer make money from their fans ? When a musician sells a CD that's what they are doing making money or profit at best from the sales. I see cosplayers as an artist. If you enjoy that artist work you should help support them. I am not saying you should make them a millionaire but you should help ease the cost of materials and other cost from cosplaying at the very least.

Richie 1138 And a lot of cosplayers create their costumes and sure most of them aren't original but that's like saying people can't sell fan art or musicians can't sample music. Should models not be able to sell their prints?

Pumpkin Warrior yes, but not if they model copyrighted characters. If you make money from Star Wars characters & don't pay Disney you can be sued. Just like if you sell a cover if a Beatles song & don't pay the rights holder

OK, but they still use a character owned by someone else. So why is that not a problem? I'm not saying cosplayers aren't artistic, i just don't get how they can be paid money to dress up like a character owned by someone else & not get in trouble. Most cosplay is allowed because people attending comic-con don't get paid

Thank you so much for making this! As an aspiring professional cosplayer, it's difficult to learn about the industry because so few cosplayers are transparent about the financial side of cosplay (not by any fault of their own -- I know there's a huge stigma against it).

+Ginny DiGuiseppi If people understand more about the cost that goes into cosplay, I think they will be more supportive for all those who are truly in it for the right purpose. One thing you can is go companies and simply ask questions, they love people with ideas. Just like lotto , you never know.

Why cosplayers wouldn't earn money from their fans ? All artists do that, actors, singers, painters..... Cosplayers are currently dressmakers, props and modeles at the same time, i don't know why it would be frowned to sell our image and work like other artists ? Thank you for you video, it's really hard to expect to earn money from cosplay but maybe in a few years it would be as easy as other art job (so difficult but not that impossible). sorry for my bad english

@@mogwailux23 Okay. So maybe there really are peope who just want to show skin. But I still think that the main idea is to cosplay a character you look up to, you want to get into reality. Of course they were the creator's idea but that's exactly why we admire them for that. We steal the characters?! I rather think most creators would be happy to see their characters coming into real life. And yes, maybe we're all lazy sluts (I mean we are otakus), but what is with those people who sit in their offices 5 days a week, just live for weekends, and are sick of their work? Do you think those people are better than Cosplayers who enjoy their live and fill it with their passion for something? There are so many people in the world who make money with NO world skills. And of course Cosplay is about getting attention if you want to make money with it. I still believe that the world of Cosplay is unique and connects people. If someone can upload videos of themselves doing dumb stuff on KZread and making money with that, then why shouldn't those Cosplayers who passionately devote themselves for a character they admire and make a costume and present themselves like models get money with what they do too?

So you are telling me that if you made a show, poured your heart and soul into its characters you would be ok if some 18 year old girl you just ub reality hates college and loves attention makes bank off your hard work you would be ok with that. I sincerely doubt it. Make a million dollar idea have it stolen and respond back to me with how you feel cause right now I doubt your being honest with yourself. I used to love the idea of cosplay. People doing exactly what you said. Bring your beloved characters to life. However, I don't believe that even half of these girls are into anime or video games. Most prolly have a single room filled with that crap to trick you into thinking they like it. If they are true fans of a persons vision, why pervert it by blasting your tits more or sexualizing every single chance you get. Pickachu is a childrens concept turned sexual for profit. Totally how the world should be right? Cause by being ok with it or giving money to these chicks means you endorse shady crap like that. Women that sell that freaking bath water. I'm not being sexist. There are no successful men in this business so I can't say people. Thats like saying the men in porn are successful when compared to the women they are certainly not. You complain about a desk job, but all I hear is you saying you want to get paid for dress up and not working. You could be a desk jockey for Elon Musk. Sure it wouldn't be the greatest funnest thing ever, but you were apart of the future of space flight and man kind reaching the stars. OR I guess you can choose to dress like a childrens cartoon character for the rest of your adult life leading toward nothing that benefits humanity. At least a Mcdonalds employee feeds people. Just because there are other jobs that people make undeserved money doesn't mean in the spirit of grade school you have to create more immoral jobs because "well Timmy got to do it so I can to. Waaaah". The idea of growing up and being an adult is knowing that life isn't about always doing what you want, but what the world needs. You don't live alone you are in a community. It doesn't need grown adults playing dress up and playing with toys 24/7. Not that you can't do those things, but it only serves YOU if YOU make is all about what YOU want. So really what was said was I, I, I, Me, Me, Me. You can help the world around you and have passion other things.

@@mogwailux23 Half of them don't even like anime/games? Seriously? Do they put so much effort into the cosplay they made just to get attention? Without even knowing the character? Wow. Of course there are people like that but they are rather few. Maybe some cosplayers show skin because the characters are designed that way? Ever thought of it? Some want their cosplay to be as close to the original as possible. Others want to change the original design and cosplay Pikachu as a human, why not? Those who cosplay an almost naked Pikachu are probably the people who dress similar in their everyday life. Well, their decision. There are many successful male cosplayers, maybe more women, yes, but where are the genders balanced? It's nice that the women have an advantage, should be like that more often... I think it's great to be able to turn your hobby into a profession. Cosplayers make an effort to sew (by the way, KZreadrs and comedians are not particularly different, they also entertain us). I agree they shouldn't get as much money as systemically important professions (such as medical workers) but they make us happy. I wonder, do you watch anime or play games at all? For your information: Mostly it's not for children.

If I would have a million dollar idea, I would be happy to see that so many people like what I am doing. There are figures, merch, fanarts and Cosplay... This is being a fan! They love it and want to take part in the community of fans. I think this just shows approval to the creator and his work. I can just see this as praise.

i'm 14 and i'm starting to cosplay and it is expensive but you don't actually have to pay you can recycle! old t-shirts maybe for the jewelry you can take and old ring or that you dont like anymore and change it too what you want i'm doing that and it's going quiet well you should try it and don't get mad or sad if it doesn't turn out well at first i'm sure that in the end it will turn out awesome!!!(sorry for my english , i'm not native)

Great video Stella! I personally can appreciate the honesty. To hear someone like yourself who has 666,0000+ followers on FB say I have an actual day job really puts things in perspective for all the professional cosplay hopefuls out there.

Thanks for the video I have been interested in how the cosplay scene does it. As a vivid supporter, I love pitching in on creators Patreon when they have them and I'd recommend it to others as well. As a content creator myself as well as someone who's had some of my personal favorite creators stop their work simply because it wasn't affordable, I really believe people need to start understanding the position these creators are in before calling them names such as "sell outs" unless what they're "selling out" for is something a bit unnecessary which I guess is in your own judgement.

I've always wondered about the life behind a professional cosplayer. Thanks for the video Stella! It was a really good thing that you brought up what no one talks about which is payment and doing work not for free. Very informative. Cheers!

Nice video. I like the authenticity. It's tough to make money with just passion alone.

It honestly goes off of having the best persona to grow the biggest fan base. Good networking => good fan base => good marketing => companies and bigger known people would want to collaborate with you!! What is your energy and why do people want to keep seeing you is the hardest question any artist must answer to themselves

Hopefully Patreon will some day pay you more money than you can possibly spend on cosplays, and then you'll have to buy that burrito.

Wow! I may be so late on doing this! I've been following you on IG & FB for quite some time now and never got a chance to watch you talk about your cosplay experiences! It is so inspiring to actually hear you talk so passionately about how Cosplayer don't really get much from what they do. I only started cosplaying last year in May 2015 and the first thing that people ask me (from work, non-cosplayer friends and family) is, "Do you get anything out of this? Do you earn anything from doing all of this?" & my answer to that is, I cosplay for myself and no one else. I enjoy creating my own cosplays to cosplay as my favourite characters. Its a hobby and its not something to seek out attention or money from others. Thank you for this video, it really is down to the truth and everyone needs to understand that.

Building a following on social network is not easy. Companies think that people get these followers naturally, but it really takes some creative thinking and constant posting to get a legit following. TL;DR: Don't feel ashamed for trying to profit from cosplaying. Great video. Old now, but I think you are really making way too many excuses. Of course you should be able to profit from this! Sure, it's great with people who have a hobby and to read about them, but for you (or other cosplayers) to spend more time on it, and to be available more, of COURSE you need cash to pay rent ant all the rest. The more out of a normal salary that can be replaced with cosplaying related activities, the more credit to you! (Double credit for wanting to keep designing as a day job.) If, by chance, you eventually reach a point where you get a lot of money, you deserve that too. That is no less deserving than "being famous" (actor or whatever). Anyhoo. My 2 cent :)

Really wonderful video to highlight what a lot of those who desire to be cos-famous maybe don't realize - that fame money. For Patreon, how do you reconcile putting tips & how-to's behind a paywall like that with the goal of building up the community and helping others learn what they need to build their own dreams? That's my reservation with it. I'm used to the free sharing of information in the community (something I love about it) and while I recognize that knowledge is something of value which can be monetized, it feels wrong not to give that freely back to the community which has given it to me over the years.

Great video! I am all for Patreons. I wish I could afford to support them all because I want the cosplayers I love to be able to keep making more awesome stuff. I don't think I will ever do anything to make money off of cosplay except participating in the Blizzcon contest. I was very happy to have gotten a little bit of money through it this year which is being pumped right back into more cosplays. It was nice getting to meet you at Blizz Headquarters before Blizzcon. +Katy Hart Here is how I manage my schedule 40 hours a week at my day job 2 hours per day commuting to my day job 4-8 hours per night working on costumes 1-2 conventions per month The result is that I don't spend a lot of time playing video games, hanging out with friends, or relaxing. I'm a workaholic and instead of procrastinating cosplay I will just add a new one to the list if I think I have spare time.

I just started Patreon last week to share my arts and cosplays and I will say it is simple to use but getting patrons is tricky. But I am still adding more stuff to it down the road.

About your art photos for sale, sister is a photographer, you touched on how to keep your inventory low, demand high, and only print what is being ordered, You can start a webpage to hold all your and your coplayers photos and then sell them to your fans. Have a walmart of photos, so everyone can find you and buy from you. Your awesome by the way. Love your art work.

Great video, Stella, you provide a lot of insight. Some people who do this see people like you, Yaya Han, and Jessica Nigri and think that if you guys can do it, they can, too, they don't understand that it takes time and dedication, and in your case, a job to help support it. As for Patreon, I think one of the problems of it is that some people see it as a crowd funding thing like gofundme when it actually isn't, gofundme helps get projects off the ground but with Patreon, you've already got it started, you just get money from fans to help you out, I'd support some patreons but my cash flow kinda sucks at the moment

I do mine myself but it all depends. I have a Mini Photo Printer, buy the Ink off of Ebay and buy the Paper locally. I do sell quite a few so I can do it at home. Same with my Freelance Photography. But if I need loads I'd go to a Photo Store.

You're a professional cosplayer in my book! Whether or not your making a living off it shouldn't denote your proficiency in the industry. I'm disappointed though that there doesn't seem to be as much money but I'm not surprised, let's blame the economy. I feel like cosplay is going mainstream now so maybe more opportunities will open where cosplayers can get paid more for appearances as guests. Maybe someday we'll be guests together! haha I gotta dream big. I'm a competitive cosplayer and aspire to be invited back someday as a judge but I'm only in the journeyman category. Anyway, you're super talented and your honesty about the industry goes a long way THANK YOU!!!

I make money from cosplay by making armor pieces via Etsy commissions. It's going pretty well, to the point where I've had to streamline my store to only offer certain items that I can make with a short turn around times like utility belts and gauntlets and shoe covers.

I agree with almost everything you mentioned in the video Stella even though i personally hate and despise money with passion. I myself am a Cosplayer which i do have a following on my Nahum The Goku Cosplayer fan page on Facebook but almost nobody ever comments nor gives any of my content that posted a Like which shows that i can't make money being a cosplayer even if i really wanted to pursue a cosplay career. Craftsmanship isn't my strong suit. Also that's good you don't only rely on Cosplay to make money especially because fans come and go.

This video really helped understand a lot. I'm looking to dive into cosplay as I absolutely love the community and the idea of dressing up as your favorite characters. I dressed up as Black Mask (simply a suit and a costume mask) but I had a blast the past two philadelphia Comicons. I don't know how you live in NY, New Jersey alone is expensive NY is crazy.

Great vid! I was particularly interested in the Patreon part. I have considered this myself as my cosplays are getting more popular and so too they are getting muuuuuch bigger and of course this means more money. I am currently working on Sarah's ballgown from the movie the Labyrinth and today alone I have gone through 30 metres of fabric (not sure what that would be in yards) and have run out! My grandma has rescues me this time because it is for a big competition but in normal circumstances I would have to abandon it for a while until I could afford to purchase more money. I have made sure to subscribe to your channel as your other vids are great too as are your cosplays! :)

Great video Stella, it's always nice to see someone actually come out and tell others how finances actual work for someone in the arts. Art may be great for the soul of anyone who wants to put an effort into it, but only 1 in 1,000 are actually going to make a profit off it. For every 999 fangirls who likes to make a new cosplay for her next convention, you have a Jessica Nigri, just like for every 999 painters for the sake of hobby you have a Monet. On a other note, will you be continuing your Cosplayer Interview series, I always found them incredibly fascinating.

This was a great video. It amazes me that more game/comic/film companies take advantage of, instead of properly compensating cosplayers. People with your talent deserve to profit from said talent representing a company or its product. I know, a few years ago, cosplay was always considered amateur. That is no longer the case. I've seen some amazing work by some amazing artists in the last few years. The cosplay community is sadly unappreciated by the artists and companies who inspire them to cosplay in the first place. 😔

I think cosplayers are underrated. It's more popular now, the costumes are more intricate, and there's more passion. But, like many people say, cosplay costs money. I don't think that fans should be complaining (you didn't say this but I wanted to point it out) about cosplayers trying to make a few bucks from their art work. That's what KZreadrs also do, and I respect you for working hard and knowing your worth at the same time. 😊

It is in essence crowdfunding. However, I wouldn't equate it to Kickstarter or Indiegogo. It's really about helping artists. That's literally the entire idea behind the company. It's not trying to get a new project funded. It's about people supporting a craft. They definitely have similarities, but we shall see how it evolves.

OKAY I ACTUALLY THINK YOU MISSED ONE THING: One of the main things I've seen is that cosplayers actually I think can profit really well off of KZread, since it can easily be turned into an amazing job! A good example: you actually. This video alone sort of proves it, because of the fact you put information that's needed, and a lot of the time, cosplayers do have tricks and tips in which it can be used for that purpose, or even just a random purpose like fixing something small; or kind of show like 'how can i make a living off of cosplay' or 'what are some options and such' as keywords!

One thing I always thought would be cool but I have not seen is if cosplayers take all their photos and put into a book and every year you could publish a new one.

i try to make cosplays by myself but i'm only 13 y.o and it's really hard ;__; i always try to recycle old clothes that i don't wear anymore and do something with them when making a costume but it's not that simple.. i don't have a sewing machine, when i sew something i must do everything with my hands, meh. but i must say that i'm pretty good at making props! i'll be cosplaying levi ackerman in a few months, hope everything turns out good. ^^

I will be working for a con soon! I don't think I will be payed for it since it is for a small con but that's fine since it will be the first time I will work for a con, it will be a good experience! I hope that this experience will lead to maybe one day working for bigger cons and earning some money! :) I could really use any advice you could give to those who want to cosplay professionally

Never ever do something for a company for free. Like if someone wants you to work for them in whatever way, make sure there’s something in it for you.

Why not profit directly from fans? Fans can become a patron to extra make sure they'll see you at the next con or to see a new costume to get prints of etc etc.
