Yeah, that's something a lot of people with silk screening on their shirts do not do and they DO last considerably longer washed and dried inside out. Another washing tip is do up your zippers on pants etc. before washing or drying as it will help minimize wear and tearing on other clothes they rub on. Don't use too much soap is another one, cause more soap is actually less clean. Always use the min. recommended amount no matter the size of load, because larger load=more soap is just a scam to sell you more soap. Lol. With how concentrated these new detergents are, nobody but the very dirtiest/greasiest clothes needs any more than the minimum on any size load. And it's easier on your pipes and washer.

WHEN I WAS A BOY we had a washing machine that was a large oak barrel. There was a long wooden handle on the top attached to gears. When you pulled the handle in and out the gears drove four pegs inside the barrel which agitated the washing inside. One worked it for about 20 minutes then fed the clothes though a hand cranked wringer. It was top loading.

Top loaders were the standard in Australia. Even now they outsell front loaders. My experience with front loaders is that they are gentler on clothes (and dirt), but take ridiculously long times to finish cycles. Water efficiency comes at cost of increased electricity usage.

I’m in the U.K. and the only top loading thing I ever saw was at a poor persons house and it was called a twin tub. They didn’t have to be plumbed in unlike an automatic washing machine. People would fill from the sink tap then at the end of the wash, it would drain from a pipe straight down the plug hole in the sink. One thing about twin tubs is good. When the wash load has finished. You move the clothing into the other drum where a very fast thoroughly efficient drum spins most of the water off. As soon as you put clothes into the spin dryer, you can put another load into the washing side which can be very helpful. The spin dryer is efficient BUT it’s not an actual dryer in the sense that a tumble dryer makes clothes ready to wear; spin dryers do not. Clothes still need airing afterwards.

When I lived in an apartment I was looking into buying one of the simpler top loaders, like you showed in the video, that connects to like a regular water faucet if I remember correctly. The top loaders we normally use here in the US are large and require its own water and electric setup so its different.

So, unless you live in a desert region with naturally low humidity, it's better to air dry your clothes in winter than summer because though it's hotter and the days are longer, warm air vaporizes water easier and expands moisture molecules making everything feel wet and humid slowing the drying process of your clothes.

(but the drum in the machine is not in a position like in this video) I like that these kind of machines are the same effective with the same capacity but smaller. I don't have to squat to load it and the best thing is If I forgot to put in a cloth I can simply stop it any time, open it and put the clothes in and continue the program.

This may seem mundane, but it is an important issue. My first time in China, '96, I was shocked that I couldn't find laundromats in Beijing. I mentioned this to the school director and he opened up a room for students to use washing machines they purchased privately, but the result was a room filled with washing machines which had to be re-arranged every time someone wanted to use one because of limited electrical sockets. There was also one broken washer donated by the school. I returned ten years later and found that there were a few laundromats that would take in laundry and were reasonably priced. All this flew in the face of my perceptions of how China would/should be because of the well-known presence (at least in films and TV) of Chinese laundries in the US. Anyway, I think more laundromats would be a very welcome improvement in the life of Chinese, at least of foreigners living there. BTW, top loading washing machines are popular also in the US.

My biggest issue with washing clothes in China was the humidity. Ok, I accept the idea of hanging clothes outside to dry. The problem with that, especially in Jiangxi province and similar areas, is that it is so humid and there is so much moisture in the air or rain that it can take up to a week to dry a single load of laundry.

I also am using a top loader I bought used 1993 from military housing, it's a Whirlpool. It had a matching dryer but I didn't convert it, so I gave it away to part out. I lived in Europe and had front loaders, hated them. I have lined dried my clothes as much as I can, using a fan in the winter when I couldn't hang them out due to snow.

Life (time-wise) is taken up by mundane tasks; "living" is figuring out how to do the mundane tasks quickly and efficiently or hiring it out. I'm old enough to remember when one day of a mother's week (mom's were called housewives and taking care of the family was considered a full time job). One day each week was called "wash day". No spin cycle on washing machine and every item had to be hand fed through a press that was hand cranked. All cloths were hung up and dried on cloths lines. In winter they would frequently be brought in frozen stiff as cardboard. Secret to washing socks and underwear together is using the hottest water setting.

Yes top-loaders are common but less so in Europe. The original washing machine was top-loading and front-loading was a later innovation, as in the last few decades. The difference is front-loaders are more efficient in energy and water use and that's why they've been replacing top-loaders in the west and that's why front-loaders are a lot more common in Europe.

Interesting Video! Over 20 years ago, when I was for an internship in Oregon, I used an american style top loader washing machine, which seems to be quite similar to the one you and Sasha use(d) in China. Nowadays, working partially in R&D in commercial laundry technology, I know, that they are less efficient in cleaning performance, but they save time. Furthermore front loader machines spin with higher g-factor, so the textiles have less moisture and drying (in a tumble dryer) needs less energy. Energy is expensive, so till the 1980s tumble dryers were also rare in Europe, where I live. Clothes were also (and still today in summer) are put on a line for drying.

It would have been best to say Europe instead of US. In Europe the top loaders are somewhat rare as everyone there rather saves money on energy and water with sideloaders and 3 hour wash cycles than get your laundry done within an hour. Especially with the newer heatpump dryers you literally can run both the washer and dryer together for a lower cost than running a single toploader cycle.

When my Wife's Dad turned to the Philippines from working almost ten years in the US, his first project was a coin-op laundromat. The business failed because no one had ever seen such a thing. Fast forward 10 or 12 years and at least here on Luzon, we see laundromats popping up everywhere along the General Douglas MacArthur national highway. A lot of people in the business now near colleges that have dorms for foreign students. The man was truly ahead of his time!!! Gas and electric dryers can be purchased at appliance shops but few folks have them likely due to the energy cost. Washing machines come in all flavors and many brands are available. We went with a front loader that offers a super high speed spin-out. The wash comes out with very little remaining moisture and will dry quickly out of doors even in our humid climate.

Actually, this is kind of an interesting subject. I've lived all my life in the US. Some assorted notes- 1. I've almost always used top loaders. Front loaders are sometimes an option in public facilities for large loads, but I think I've actually used one maybe once, ever. 2. I actually think, if I ever buy my own washer, it will be a front-loader. There's not the unbalance problem you get with top-loaders. As for having to bend down to use one, just elevate it off the floor. And space use should not be a problem with the right kind of room design. 3. Not washing socks and underwear together actually sounds quite sensible, and I may start separating them, now that I think of it. The problem is that for a single person, you kind of need both, and more, for a full load. The solution might simply be to have a larger stock of both, do them both somewhat less frequently (maybe socks one week and underwear the next), and set the washer for somewhat smaller loads. 4. I think in South America it's common to dry clothes on the rear balcony of an apartment. That seems sensible for there. It might look a little unsightly, but it's not set far out from the building, so is not that conspicuous. The temperatures don't vary that much with the seasons, so you can handle things the same way all year. And if your balcony faces east, you can wash and set the clothes out in the morning when it's cool, and on sunny days the Sun will help to dry them.

For people who don't know this can really reduce the size of a container because it removes almost all of the air using a vacuum cleaner. Problem was when they wanted to repack to leave no vacuum cleaners. oops.

Top loaders are more common in Australia, as is drying clothes in the fresh air and sun. No pollution to worry about, but in inner city apartments there might not be anywhere to dry them, so city dwellers seem to have be likely to have a dryer. I don't see how a front loader takes any more space than a top loader, especially if you factor in a dryer on top of (or under) it. I prefer a top loader though. If you can, then avoid the usage of a tumble dryer. The usual ones are energy eating monsters. The usual ones are those with exhaust pipe. There are expensive energy saving tumble dryers, the best are condensation type with integrated heat pump. They have a water tank and they internally reuse the heat from the warm air. There is no exhaust pipe. All European companies have them, such as Bosch, Miele or Philipps. From Asia only Panasonic and Samsung have this type, AFAIK. For towels that you wish to have softer, simply hang them in an outside area with wind movement. If there is no wind they will become stiff.

I taught English in South Korea for 2 years and dryers didn't exist there either. I tended to throw in a softener sheet in the wash to prevent my clothes from stiffening (because the water there is really hard with mineral content), and then air dried in my room (or, in the case of my second year when my apartment was basically 10ft x 10ft, in the corridor I shared with my co-teachers). Winter was quite nice because you could dry your clothes on the (clean) floor since floor heating is awesome and ubiquitous there.

I used both top and front loaders in China. The top is the one that most people had. The resort had the front loader. Often the machines are outside on balconies. We should have planned for more drying time because we didn’t want to pack wet clothes. Used hair dryer to dry a bit faster. I’m amazed that most people’s clothes don’t get blown off the balcony hanging racks when there are stronger wind gusts especially on high floors.

Huh, Hotel don't wash underpants? I stayed in plenty of hotels in China and have used their cleaning services which has included underpants. No problem 🤔

Decyber They have a price list, which has a check box and price for each item. So when you get it back you have a break down of items/price. But to be honest, depending on location. It can be cheaper to buy brand new underpants and socks LOL

I grew up with top loaders. I currently have frontloading LG washer and dryer. The good thing about front loaders is they use much less water then top loaders.

We have top loaders in Australia, you can choose to buy a top loader or a front loader ( the one with the front door) 😊

My Chinese ex-wife always hand washed her underwear. Even though we had a washing machine. Which was far more hygienic than hand washing. She would often rope me into doing that for her which I hated. “Baby, I’m going to make something harder than it has to be, but I want you to do it and you can’t do it in a more efficient way.” There are a lot of things I miss about being married. Having to do dumb shit because of old wives’ tales even though the modern world has moved on is not one of them.

Some dirty doesn't come off with washing machines, requiring hand intervention. You will find latin americans do the same with their clothes.

@ If that's the case, what kind of dirt doesn't come off by washing your underwear in a machine? Or were you talking about normal clothes and dirt like wine, oil etc.? It's nothing that is specified to a culture or continent then.
