I'm reminded of how spinning a glass stone that's curved on one side and flat on the other (as used in gaming or in aquariums) will cause it to flip over. I've heard there were mushroom-shaped toys that would exploit this, with spinning them like a top resulting in them standing up on their stem.

If it's spelled Celt it's said with a C. In every usage of that spelling!! As it's a proper name of a people!! It's incredibly disrespectful to the extreme to try and take a culture's name and use it for something unrelated (and then pronounce it wrong) It doesn't matter what the person who named them thought, or what the general archeological consensus is. Imagine if archeologists tried to name something a German-Stone but want to pronounce it Jerry-Stone, and say that their pronunciation was correct. Not chill at all Maybe in the bad old days when uneducated archeological colonial forces were running around would that be fine, but not anymore. And not for a while.

So kool. Always wondered how these worked. As usual, you gave an excellent description, short and to the point. Love all your stuff.
It took me half-way through the video before I figured out it's not the composition of the celt stone, but its shape.
Always such interesting topics, and experiments I'd love to run myself but now I don't have to. This has become my fav channel on KZread!
my 6th grade science project (1st place district) in about 1986 was about these. I made a bunch of them with dental stone molded in a spoon, then hot glued a dowel at an angle and experimented with different weights glued to the dowel. I had some that would reverse 3-4 times or more.
You show some really neat scientific effects. Much appreciated

This action is actually used in the automotive field the camshaft has that designed into the camshaft to rotate the lifters
@gibble75310
11 ай бұрын
ohhh I was wondering what made them rotate!!
@michaelharrison1093
11 ай бұрын
I don't think that it is this action that makes the lifters rotate. If you look at the center line of the lifter it's slightly offset compared to the centre of the cam lobe. This offset results in the torque that rotates the lifter. Keeping the lifters rotating ensures that they don't get worn in one place.

@michaelharrison1093 the cam lobes have a taper machined into them the lifters have a cone shaped machined into them causes rotating

@TheActionLab -- You may find this to be a similar phenomenon: The statue of Neb-Senu, believed to date to 1800 B.C., is housed in the Manchester Museum in England. in 2013 it became notorious for mysteriously rotating during the night.
Should have been a disclaimer about no rattlesnakes being de-backed. Apart from that, excellent as ever! I guess this is a form of energy transference, but what's so cool is that there are no extra components, it all takes place within the one block. Nice! ⭐👍
Hey, My name in Mark. I watch your videos for a while now and I like them. I usually do not place comments, but today I decided to do it. I noticed, that you spin the stone clockwise and than it stops and goes in opposite direction. However, when you used the vibrating table, the stone was going only in one direction: counterclockwise. Now: if you would spin the stone initially counterclockwise, would it still stop and reverse the direction, or is the counterclockwise direction a "natural" order of spinning of the stone, so as long as the energy (from either spin, shake or vibration) is delivered it will end up this way? Thank you for reading. Mark.
11 ай бұрын
It will always end up counterclockwise. When you start in this direction, it will not change. It is kind of the "natural" direction.

It's interesting how a simple oscilating motion can directly cause smoothe rotational motion just from the shape - I wonder if this has any practical applications? Like, instead of using pistons and connecting rods to convert oscilatting/reciprocating movement into rotational, we can just use some kind of rattleback-shaped mechanical component that can translate the vibrations of an IC engine? Or would this not be energy efficient? Genuinely curious here.
Could this be used to generate electricity beside a busy freeway?
I wonder if there is a way to scale this function down to say less than 20 nanometres to create small one way light traps
what could be the applications of this shape?

It's strange that the name for these stones is pronounced "selts" when the word Celt describing the tribal peoples of ancient Europe is pronounced "Kelt". (Yes, the Boston Celtics are actually mispronouncing that name).
Pretty cool
got me to buy one
1- The celts would use this shape for their weapons so they could throw them at Romans and it would come back. Most of the time, without the Roman soldier. 2- They got this idea when they invaded Australia around 1700bc. A shaman kangaroo, gave them the schematics for the stone as a piece offering. Local celts would call it a "Kuntstone" but the name didn't stick and was lost to the sands of time. 3- They used this to know if they needed to perform exorcism. If the stone would spin the wrong way around, they would liberate their friends from the devil. None of this is true.
