How do Anti-Drone guns work?
How does an anti drone gun work?
In the recent invasion of Ukraine, drones have been heavily used by both sides especially for surveillance, so much so that anti drone weapons have become a common sight. In this video we'll look at how drone jammers and anti drone weapons work.
The name of the weapon most commonly used in Ukraine is the EDM4S which stands for Electronic Drone Mitigation 4 - System and is manufactured by Lithuanian company NT service and also known as the sky swiper. They cost around $15000 each and weigh approximately 5.5kg.
Drone use radio frequencies to communicate with the remote control over long distances, this is why they are able to travel miles away without losing signal which they would do if they used a commination method such as Bluetooth. The most common radio frequency band drones use is 2.4GHz and 5GHz. When the anti drone gun is fired at the drone it doesn't launch a bullet or projectile at it. its shoots its own electromagnetic signal at the same frequency the drone is using to communicate with its controller, this jams the frequency which stops the drone being able to communicate with the remote control as no signal can reach it. Depending on the drone and its safety features, this may cause the drone to fall to the ground and at the very least it will stop the pilot getting a video feed from it. Making the drone useless to the pilot. The gun has a range of around 5km and the fact the anti drone gun doesn't shot a bullet or projectile to take down the drone allows the guns operator to remain undetected and a safe distance away.
Some consumer drones such as DJI have been used in the recent invasion which have a return to home feature which may be activated by the signal between the pilot and remote control being disrupted. This will cause the drone to automatically fly back to the pilot when the signal is disrupted by the anti drone gun which will reveal the pilots location to their enemy.
Anti drone guns and drone jammers are not only used in wars and are very occasionally used at airports if someone fly's too close to the runways. They will often have stationary drone jammers that work in the same way rather than using portable anti drone guns so they don't alarm the public or need a human to operate them.

So would they have to keep the gun aimed at the drone for a period of time or wouldnt the signal from the operator just reestablish contact with the drone.

Great question! Yes it would need to be fired continuously for a bit for the drone stay disconnected from the operator
Great intorduction, watch the whole videos! I enjoy it a lot! thanks for sharing my friend! big like 45, new sub here from Taiwan!

Thank you! I really appreciate it
I believe some drone expert can counter that drone jammer

It's not impossible to counter it, but it's made to counter cheap drones that aren't worth developing but rather just buying 10 more and trying to overwhelm the gun since it's mostly 1 gun per a group or even more troops

Yes some more expensive drones can but these are used mainly on cheap consumer drones 😊
Now imagine the drone has a patch antenna that allows to locate the jammer and his jamming signal. And is preprogrammed to attack the jammer. I didn't invent anything that is the point of 5th Gen fighters I just downscaled it to drones.

Interesting/ scary thought, suppose it won’t be long until drones have this

there are also GNSS receivers with internal dead reckoning available now so even with complete RF blackout it could still RTH whether you jammed or spoofed the signal 👀
Why not shoot the drone pilot instead of mucking around with jamming the drone?

The pilot is not always visible and may be several miles away, thanks for watching!
Isnt this the voice of the "lustcast" channel??

What If the drones can self pilot with Ai .will it be possible to destroy them .

Good question, this type of anti drone gun wouldn’t work on those as it relies on blocking communications between the pilot and the drone
@quasa0

yeah with AI you would have to physically damage the drone
The content is great. Didn't got why uzkij is black, that's funny. Next time just draw an orc, we call them the same name

Is it 2,4 GHz or 5.8 of maybe the old 35 Mhz ?????? and how about frequency hopping
@techindex1

It can fire a frequency of 2.4 and 5.8ghz, the frequency can be changed by the person operating the gun
