How Dirty is My Aquarium Canister Filter After 1 Year??

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

After 1 year of use without any cleaning, today is finally the day I take this canister filter apart and give it a good clean. I forgot to clean the impeller and spindle in this video 😅 but not to worry as I’ve already done that!

    Keeping up with a regular cleaning every few months this time will help keep your flow at its highest potential which will make for better co2 distribution and distillation, especially since you run it inline; I also think you will be surprised how much it will cut down on any algae you dealt with in your last build. Check out the manual for ADA canisters for some real good tips on cleaning your media etc.

    I was about to comment the same thing. Just because you still have some flow, I wouldn’t say it was running with no problems. The algae this tank was plagued with might have been significantly reduced with regular cleaning.

    You just discarded a rich, healthy bacterial ecosystem very important for nitrification of ammonia and for processing other wastes. I would recommend using sponges which can be squeezed clean of the detritus while maintaining a large portion of your bacterial culture. Ceramic media are ok, but I have discontinued using them since their internal pore structure tends to clog reducing their effectiveness. Good videos, I wish I was your age with youtube.

  • @RyoWatanabee

    @RyoWatanabee

    3 жыл бұрын

    I learnt it while working at an ADA advanced aquarium shop. You’re not drying it out. You keep the lid on so that the media doesn’t dry out but have some open space so that air can get in. It’s better than leaving it fully sealed with no oxygenation. Aquashop wasabi (another ADA store in Kyoto) also recommends this if you’re unable to run the filter on another tank
