"Positive" and "negative" in standard definition are meant in the _strict_ sense (i.e. strictly positive, > 0, or strictly negative, 0, its divergent behaviour as x-->0 from x>0 is different to that as x-->0 from x0. However, it is still nonetheless useful to explore in f the limit as x-->0 from above and below anyways, by expressing f as a piecewise function, because it enables us to prove mathematically that f is not differentiable at x=0. My point is that although 0 is neither positive nor negative, the direction from which x-->0 in f and g affects its shape, occupied quadrant and direction of convergence or divergence. This is informative of their behaviour and allows us to compare them rigorously, which can furthermore allow us to interpret "positivity" or "negativity" at the point x=0. It might therefore be convenient to treat x-->0 from above as +0 and x-->0 from below as -0.

    Their claim makes no sense unless one admits that IQ tests don't actually measure some form of abstract intelligence that is constant thorought one's life. Because if your education artficially inflates your score then everyone is cheating on the test to varying degrees and therefore It has little value for anyone that doesn't score super low. And you know what? That seems to be the case, people with degrees tend to get better scores on IQ tests, overall education is heavily correlated to IQ score, and obviously people who haven't been to University may also have an advantage if they've studied certain topics. I mean, do you need to be a completely ignorant person for your IQ score to be valid then? That doesn't sound very useful. It's better if IQ tests enthusiastics just admit that logical reasoning can be improved with practise, otherwise It becomes hard to defend that kind of intelligence testing.

  • @usayeed727

    IQ is a very good measurement of intelligence but it’s not the ONLY measure of it. The case being made with regards to an educational background artificially lowering your score is entirely absurd because it’s supposed to be a non discriminatory test designed to accurately assess your level of intelligence irrespective of your background- at least for culture fair IQ tests. Your point about education level correlating with IQ scores is beyond valid- it explains also why IQs in developed countries on average FAR outstrip that of underdeveloped ones. This whole debacle against the gentleman in the KZread video was utterly absurd. I’m glad everything was sorted.

    @fuseteam even if they adjust it based on formal education level the fact that they have to do that proves that either, education raises your iq, or that it artificially does so. What about a person that is well read and studies at home? Or children that are raised in a well educated family with these types of puzzles and challenges discussed or about the home? This would give them a higher score against others who are not raised in the same environment.

    Your IQ artificially lowered because of your official mathematics background, but for us mathematical hobbyists and puzzle enthusiasts? Seems rather arbitrary to only lower for formal education. All of us learn every day and learn to recognize patterns. We should adjust for this! Take a test on puzzle recognition to allow us to scale your score on this next test on puzzle recognition. Then everyone will score the exact same and everyone can be happy. I still think it makes sense to an extent. Maybe not the formal education thing, but if you study mathematics you are likely to be experience to patterns that may appear on that test. Since you memorized the pattern you would already know the answer without actually thinking about, while someone in a different line of work might not have the same pattern recognized requiring them to think deeply about it, and may not get the correct answer. I think the score you get after the point decrease due to your degree, is probably the very least your score could be, since I think they just cut out some parts of the test that you might have memorized. Sorry if this is long.

    The purpose of IQ tests was to spot development problems in young children. It's pointless outside of that. An IQ of 200 means you are functioning at twice your mental age. This might be meaningful at 6 years old, but if you are 50, that would be a mental age of 100, at which most people are dead. MENSA is obviously a club for people without basic reasoning skills, and no understanding of tests or education.

  • @cyan1294

    @cyan1294

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ernststravoblofeld I dont think your argument is a good one, even if you are functionung at that mental age you have the advantage of being younger than 100. Also, I think that the way of seeing iq as this : (m/a)100 where m is mental age and a is real age has been disproven and considered to be oversimplified. I may have to do research on that. The tests it self studies basic reasoning, I dont really see what's wrong with that, people with an above average intelligence typically do have differences in understanding the world around them and may feel lonely. Mensa is a way of finding people like them. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, and the argument that is tests were originally meant to be used for children is silly. Much of the technology in our everyday lives have had a different use entirely, but the use has been repurposed.

  • @alxjones

    IQ is specifically meant to measure something independent of your ability to study directly the material tested. Being able to study for the IQ test would flood Mensa with strong studiers, which would devalue the organization for the people it's targeting. GRE and SAT, on the other hand, don't gate some exclusive society. Instead, they can profit off of selling study materials and multiple attempts at the tests, because higher success rates don't hurt them in any way. Keep in mind that all of these tests are owned by *private* companies, so they all have full reign on how their protected information is released.

    @@alxjones That's the issue with IQ tests. They don't measure "intelligence" in the sense that we think they do. That's the whole debate around IQ tests in general. Some people grow up in environments where certain types of thinking are conditioned into the child, thereby giving them a major advantage when growing up. It's the reason why we have the Flynn Effect-our modern way of living causes us to think differently from previous generations, making us "smarter" than them. To actually measure "intelligence", raw intelligence, you'd have to do different tests that are independent of cognitive conditioning.

    I took the Mensa culture fair test and I considered it to be highly, but not perfectly fair. The organization isn't perfect either. My test result arrived in the mail saying I hadn't qualified to join. A couple of weeks later I received an email from them asking me to join. I guess anyone can make mistakes. Which communication from them was wrong you might ask. I've wondered about that myself and I think I'll never know. The Mensa people I meet are awesome. Great times together. It's even more fun because everyone understands each other's jokes. :-)

    I hate to take Mensa test, in case my concentration dwindles at some points of time of day. I have selective memory that enables me to remember what's important to me and forget what's trivial. I forget half of yesterday and more the day before. I remember only scraps of last week. For my forgetfulness, I keep a study diary in which I jot down titles of video tutorials I have watched. .
