How did Prussia become a Kingdom? | DOCUMENTARY

Prussia was undoubtedly one of the most important actors in Europe’s Early- and Late Modern periods. It has a fascinating history and geographically and politically, up until the early 18th century, it did not make much sense for Prussia to become a Kingdom. And in total, the Kingdom would only exist independently for 170 years before becoming part of the German Empire in 1871. But how did this enormous power located in Europe's geographical heart come to be?

    I just love it when in history small minor states turn into absolute behemoths (Rome from a tribe to an empire , England into the British empire,Prussia from a duchy to a powerful nation then to Germany and so on).

    Context: although you often present history that goes back far enough that it's difficult to add context, it would help some of us to know what was happening at the same time in other areas. For example, "During this time of war the Vatican had not been built, Mozart was born, London was inhabited by peasants and Vikings were just exploring the coast of North America. Hans Bruegel was just a boy and China had discovered gunpowder."

    An amazing video yet again. One funny comment though: At first, when reading the title, and of course knowing it was going to be another great one, couldn't help but chuckle, because the simple title, with just a pinch of context, reminded me when German actor Oliver Masucci, playing Adolph in the movie "Look who's back" (Er ist wieder da) asked the opposite: _"Does Poland still exist?!"._ Cheers and thanks again! Edit: Brutal grammar and semantics mistake fixed.

    Thank you Gary - I am happy you enjoy my work. To be fair India is one of my 'blind spots' when it comes to history. Creating these videos is great because I can move my attention to those blind spots in order to learn about them. Just bought an audiobook on the history of India to become more acquainted with the subject.

    Because the Kingly Prussia Part (sorry German) Rebelled against the Teutonia Order and accepted the Polish King as their ruler. If you want to ready this by yourself search for Prussian Confederation.

  • @Argacyan

    @Argacyan

    Жыл бұрын

    Somebody else already wrote a year ago, but yes the War of the Prussian Confederation lead to the borders. Prussia, which had previously been a sizable land owned by the Teutonic Order, was partitioned with Poland annexing the western bits while the eastern bits became a fiefdom or vassal not part of Poland but hierarchically still under the Polish king. Both parts were German, with depending on the specific areas different minority populations such as Kashubians. At no point in time did borders in the area follow "natural boundaries" which is a concept that only became popular much later in time & highly concentrated in France, which sought to find justifications for its wars of annexation eastwards.
