• How Devotees Think
Some people say that not even a leaf moves without the will of the Lord. Though this is correct, but it is not that each and every activity is performed by the Supreme Lord only. [For example] On one side is Duryodhana and on the other side is Arjuna. Duryodhana said, "He prabhu! We are just puppets. And You are the one making the puppets dance. I just act the way You direct. There is neither any fault nor any credit due to me for this. And if there is some fault of mine then You may kindly forgive me. You made me fight and so I fought. I (tried to) burn the Pandavas alive, I deprived them of everything (their kingdom). All of this is nothing but Your doing itself!"
Such are the statements of demons. How do the devotees think? The devotees say that if I have behaved wrongly, then this is the fault of my independent nature, and whatever good act I may have performed, that was because You (the Supreme Lord) inspired me in that way. Therefore, whatever we are doing presently [in our conditioned state], is by our own independent desire. And when we become the devotees of the Supreme Lord, like Prahlada, like Hanumanji, at that time, whatever activities they perform, those are all being executed by the Supreme Lord through them. So they are not at fault, this statement is correct in their case. But as of now, whatever sinful or pious activities we perform, the Lord has given us the independence to do so.
But if we misuse that independence, then we will have to bear the fruits of those activities. We will get totally crushed like a grain in a flour mill. He will not spare us and will consider the outcome of our each activity very diligently. Therefore we should consider these things very carefully and act accordingly.

कुछ लोग कहते हैं कि बिना भगवान् की इच्छा के पत्ता तक नहीं डोलता[हिलता] यह बात तो ठीक है किन्तु सब कुछ भगवान् ही नहीं करते। [एक ओर] दुर्योधन और दूसरी ओर में अर्जुन है। दुर्योधन कहता है कि हे प्रभु हम तो कठपुतली हैं और आप कठपुतली को चलाने वाले हैं, आप जैसा चलाते हैं मैं वैसा ही करता हूँ, इसमें मेरा कोई दोष या गुण नहीं है और यदि कुछ दोष है तो आप क्षमा करें। आपने लड़ाया और मैं लड़ लिया। हमने पाण्डवों को जलाया और उन्हें कुछ नहीं दिया, यह सब कुछ आपकी ही लीला है। ऐसा तो असुर लोग ही कहते हैं।
भक्त लोग क्या करते हैं? भक्त लोग कहते हैं कि यदि मैंने कुछ अन्याय किया है तो यह हमारी स्वतन्त्रता का दोष है और [यदि कुछ] अच्छा कर्म हुआ है तो आपने प्रेरणा देकर कराया। इसलिए अभी हम जो कुछ कर रहे हैं अपनी स्वतन्त्र इच्छा से कर रहे हैं। जब हम प्रभु के भक्त हो जायेंगे जैसे प्रह्लाद और हनुमानजी तो उस समय [वे लोग] जो कुछ करेंगे वह सब प्रभु उनके द्वारा करवायेंगे इसलिए उसमें उनका कोई दोष नहीं होगा। यह सब कुछ तो ठीक है किन्तु अभी हम जो पापकर्म और पुण्य करते हैं [उसके लिए] प्रभु ने हमें स्वतन्त्रता दी है किन्तु यदि उस स्वतन्त्रता का असद् व्यवहार करेंगे तो हमें भोग करना पड़ेगा। चक्की में एकदम पीस देंगे और छोड़ेंगे नहीं। एक-एक वस्तु पर विचार करेंगे। इसलिए यह सब विचार करके हमको चलना चाहिए।
