How David Blatt Will Run The Cavaliers Offense

Спорт

Thanks to / 99nmrasdf for some of the clips used.
Coach Nick went through a bunch of game footage from David Blatt's Macabbi teams to breakdown what he likes to do on offense, and how that will translate to the NBA with Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, and Anderson Varejao.

I played for David Blatt for 2 seasons in Maccabi. He will be a top 5 coach in the NBA from day one. don't be surprised if you see Cleveland in the playoffs in his first season. He will get the most out of every player on that team. Great breakdown of his playbook by the way! Good stuff!

Coach Blatt is known for his matchup zones and switching defenses. It will be interesting to see how will will incorporate some of his defensive principles with the NBA's Defensive 3 second rules and the spacing that is provided for superstars to isolate. I would expect to see a lot of traps on the superstars in order to get the ball out of his hands and make the weakest link on the court make the decision with the ball. Blatt is also known to for his full court man to man and zone presses. The presses change the rhythm of the game and it's forces the ball into the hands of a non playmaker. If the press is effective, yet doesn't result in a steal, it will force the offense to play with a short clock. It will be interesting to see how the Cavs respond to his fun, yet demanding style. Many of the Cavs will flourish if they embrace and follow his leadership.

I like how you mentioned the 5 out set at the end looking like Miami's and being the most stagnant set. I was watching the whole video thinking that Miami's offense needs to have a similar level of motion to create easier opportunities. The point guard play wasn't their biggest problem; the lack of motion-oriented offensive sets was.

i bet you were saying the same w=thing when the thunder won 15 games with jeff green, russell westbrook, and kevin durant, thabo sefolosha, and shaun livingston. takes time for extremely young teams to develope, and mike brown was AWFUL for them last year. swap brown for a competent coach and they win ATLEAST 8 more games. they lost a shit ton of games down the wire because of game planning and the fact their team is inexperienced. plus they played over .500 after their gm got fired in february. i see no reason this team cant make a huge leap next season and win 46-52 games. very talented.

David is well known not only for his perfectionizm but for team work. He knows how to get players to want to work harder, respect one another and not be depended on one or two players. He is a great motivator, teacher and very targetted person. I will be very very surprised if the cavs wont play fast and passionate basketball after adjusting to his system. He has succeded every where he coached and this past season he took a bunch of battered players (many injuries) low budget team and turned them into winners with a spirit that no matter what they will fight till the end, never give up and win. Eventually thay won the european championship beating much better and richer teams with three tines the budget. It will take time but CAV fans will live him. Go CAVS all the way…

I got to see Maccabi win a championship because of this guy. No doubt I'd be looking forward to seeing what he will bring to the Cavs and the NBA. But I'm worried. This is Blatt's first year, and in Europe I haven't really seen complex plays out of him, I did happen to notice a lot of simple pick n rolls out on top. Furthermore, I'm sure he's aware that now he has a 3 second violation rule on defense, so I guess it's about adjusting to the formula more than anything else. Still, he has a lot of positives. He loves to motivate his guys, and everywhere he went to coach, his teammates praised him. He even helped a backup point guard with off court issues win a finals MVP.

I bet mike brown doesnt even know half of these offensive sets. Huge upgrade, especially since we saw the success of teamplay/euroball this season with the spurs. Dont be shocked to see the cavs easily making the playoffs next year especially if they nail the first pick. This guy is perfect for kyrie and waiters as he thinks team first as opposed to brown who would just allow his young players to learn bad habbits on offense chucking up shot after shot. I think 2 Down will work exceptionally with the Cavs' new acquisitions, Mike Miller and James Jones. Definitely with Mike Miller, since he can put the ball on the floor and make the pass, too. Jones, on the other hand, is basically just a shooter. So if he doesn't get a good look, they'll just reset and start a new play. And if they get Allen, this play will be even better.

Geez watching this video now and looking at the projected Cavs starting five compared to what it was for him. I wonder if he'd still have the job if he had gotten a young team who wanted to play for him like Cleveland planned on until they found out LeBron was interested in a return. A few weeks before Blatt got hired I asked my dad (a pro basketball journalist) if an NBA team had ever hired a coach from Europe. Then oddly enough Blatt got hired. I really hope he gets another shot in the NBA one day, I love Blatt as a coach and really feel as if that job was set up for him to fail with Lue being hired as the highest paid assistant AND the second candidate for HIS job along with the fact that he ended up with a team that wasn't built for him. He also made the mistake of equating Europe to the NBA, which even as a huge Euroleague fan I know is far from the truth. He'll probably go back to Europe this year, but hopes to return to the NBA one day which like I said, I really want to see.

Blatt is probably even better as a defensive coordinator than offensive one. His most recent teams were very small, and had trouble rebounding the ball, but even so I don't think he's coached a team that was out of the top 3 defensively (aside from Efes Pilsen, which lost a lot of players due to financial complications mid-season) in any of the tournaments he's participated in in the past decade.

Preaching defense is easy. Hell Mark Jackson did that for The Dubs and for his 2nd year, he got them playing top 5 defense and one of the best teams to contest jumpers. Sadly it also got his glass cannon not firing at all, being only 13th in the league in offense. But If you have a sound offensive philosophy in place and the personnel, defense is not that hard to follow up. The problem right now is the Cavs don't have a rim protector and no one to check on wings.

Grade2efficient I wanted to disagree with you, since defense is really important and I feel you're underselling it, but you do have a point. assuming your defensive schemes are sound, and you don't have 5 drastically bad defenders on the court at one time, the most important keys in nba team defense are multiple hard efforts, communication from your bigs about where the picks are coming from, and knowing the opponent's tendencies. if your team is willing to be held accountable and is well-disciplined, they will most likely defend fine; those two things are probably why mike d'antoni and don nelson's teams never defended well.

Dribble Weave, excellent.😀😀😀 I actually like 5-Out Motion Offense = Pass-Cut-& Fill with at least 2 passes BEFORE ATTACK !!!

I'm looking forward to seeing more structured offense at the NBA. Hopefully the Spurs has set the tone and the rest of the league will follow suit. I'm tired of watching isolations all the time. Let's flip the page and end the one-on-one style of play

These sets look almost like a page from the Spurs offense playbook. Does the Cavs really have the personnel, b-ball IQ, and culture (you know how Irving and Waiters don't get along very well) to execute them?

On top of being a fantastic coach, Blatt is well known in Israel for being able to fill the squad with the right pieces. It might take time, but he'll instill the culture in the organization.

So I guess his offensive action looks better with LeBron and the potential of Love. ***** if you were GM for Cleveland would you offer Irving & Waiters for Love, LaVine & Dieng? I believe they could get that in return because Irving is locked up and I think with LeBron running point forward and Wiggins abilities it might be a better match.

  • @zimbu_

You might get this to work for the starters, but the Cavs bench is full of guys like Alonzo Gee, Tyler Zeller and Matt Dellavedova. The management just doesn't know how to find good role players and it's been like that forever. Even with this guy, the Doc Rivers/Tom Thibodeau protégé Tyronn Lue and three #1 and two #4 picks from the last four drafts the Cavs are going to find a way to suck.

  • @oMaJoJ

Embiid got hurt and it scared them off, because they're trying to make the playoffs this year and they don't know if it's just a sign of things to come.
