How DAREDEVIL Helps Us Understand THE BOOK OF JOB

Daredevil is known for having a tumultuous relationship with God, but in season 3 of the Disney Plus Daredevil series, he outright denounces God and compares his suffering to that of Job. He claims that he, too, thought he was God's perfect soldier, only to feel kicked down and alone in the end.
We're going to deconstruct the Book of Job from the perspective of Daredevil and discuss 3 main points:
- The popular story of Job is a lie
- Job had a distorted view of God
- God had good reason to allow Job's suffering
We'll also discuss suffering in relationship to following God and how Daredevil is closer to Job than he thinks, just not for the reasons he thinks.
0:00 - Job, According to Daredevil
2:30 - There is no wager
4:26 - Job has a distorted view of God
5:18 - Rule-Follower vs Walking with God
9:48 - The Corrupt Formula
14:05 - Moralism vs Hedonism
16:58 - The TWO Prodigal Sons
18:26 - Lessons on Suffering
21:02 - The Lost Family
22:39 - More Lessons on Suffering
25:08 - When will Daredevil get it?

I work in a Prison and constantly reference the book of Job. I think it's a great story to tell/teach people that through hardship there can be a light at the end of the hardship it just depends on your perspective and what you do in the now that can determine your outcome

There's an apocryphal tradition within Judaism not so much Christianity that Job ignored direct instructions from God that resulted in the death of hundreds of his fellow Jews so therefore he had to be purified and punished as he was in a position of trust where he was expected to know and act better.

I remember the first book in the bible I ever read to its full completion was the book of Job.During the beginning of my faith and questioning God and my life and the meaning of my life and the meaning of morals.I tried to set myself free from my sins and tried to rid myself of my guilt.I tried to do good like Job but then I realized that I was just like Job when I read through.I was stubborn so God had to crush my pride and he left me in the dust and shame of my sin for awhile until finally I realized I was at his mercy.I asked God to help me and forgive me and to help me walk with him. That was 8 years ago and im not perfect but i strive for it.

This was a great 'wake up call'-esque warning against slumping into self-righteousness and vainglory, just at the right time! As Christians, we need to stand guard, be vigilant, lest we grow beyond blind and distant than those whom we so casually deem 'lost sheep' In gratitude, brother. Wishing you a wonderful and blessed New Year 2024

I found myself wishing I had found you sooner. Like I needed to hear this sooner. But I know now that God willed me to see this now because this is my mindset. I too compared myself to Job it is my favorite story in the Bible and though I don’t pride myself on being basked in His light in His favor I also feel that I am one step away from losing Him altogether, from losing my way. But always and forever I will trust in His direction and in His guidance. Even with that I will admit that I have been stubborn in that belief because sometimes it doesn’t suit me. I hear God talk and think “No, no that can’t be right”. This has opened my eyes even more though and I’m so very glad I was able to receive this message. I look forward to seeing more of your content. God bless you, and I mean that in the most sincerest way. God bless you.

I really appreciate this video, in recent years I've fallen into the trap of constantly expecting rewards when I take admittedly small steps in the right direction. I've looked at others and thought of them as undeserving, but that's a pitiful point of view because I'm equally undeserving. It bothers me that even though I know better, I still make the mistake, apologize, ask for forgiveness, and make the same mistake.

Such a great teaching brother, I've listened to this through twice now, and the first time there were two times I had to pause and listen again because they were such powerful words. The first was when you said, "God didn't use Job as a pawn to win a bet with Satan, but Satan as a pawn to win Job", what a great way of putting it. The other was when you were talking about people saying, "Thank God I'm not like those Mary-worshiping Catholics", man does that hit home, I'm guilty.

Just finished your Daredevil season 3 reactions and loved them and loved this video. Im agnostic now, but believed in a biblical God growing up before having a crisis of faith in my early 20s while battling drug addiction. Which then led me to become athiest for a handful of years and really resenting religion in every way. Im now 34 and over time gradually changed my perspective to Agnostic. I do believe there's something far bigger than us, but dont think anyone could ever really know what it is. So I learned to just live life, do the best I can, accept life for what it is and now can appreciate why religion is a good thing for those who choose it. Which has made my life far more enjoyable. Really enjoy all the stuff you do!

Your comment towards the end about God using satan as a tool to save Job reminded me of one of my favorite verses. ‭‭Romans 11:33-36 NIV Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Funny enough, I'm a catholic myself and Daredevil helped me strengthen my faith. I was raised in this, never forced into it, but I never really took it upon myself to understand the faith on a deeper level. I had a very surface level knowledge of the Church and the Bible, despite years of "practice." Daredevil was favorite show of mine since it came out, and him being such a conflicted Catholic helped me relate. When Season 3 came out, I didn't know how much I related, and when he mentions Job, I really started to think. I had heard about the story but never gave it deep thought. A few years later, my life got harder. In COVID, it got to the point where I began to question my faith, and began to start over and learn it for real, or if I even wanted to be a Catholic. I realized how little of the Bible I actually knew, and started with research on the book that I did know, Job. That is a very hard place to get introduced to God, but it was needed. I hated it, and I didn't understand what I was reading until I started reading the other Wisdom Books and the Gospels. Job began to make more sense to me, and eventually I came to love the book. After a while, I did understand more about the faith I was raised in, and I found my own way to it with my own reasons. Largely due to my experience with this exact topic. This show, and the character, stook with me through this, and seeing Matt struggle was something I'd watch when I felt alone in my struggles too. And seeing him return to his faith felt so much better when I had too. Great video, God bless you.

As a fellow Pop culture Christian Daredevil has always been my favorite hero. And the show has always been alittle conflicting to me. I appreciate this pov. It was different and rich. I learned something about my relationship with Jesus as well. Cheers.

I'm glad for this. Most videos on KZread talking about Double D's faith are very surface level but this one was very well done.

Really interesting take on Job that I haven’t heard before. It’s an endlessly fascinating book with different ways to approach it. One of the most compelling to me is in how it works in dialogue with other wisdom literature of the Old Testament, namely Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Proverbs presents this almost karmic view of the world where the equation of “Good God + Good Works = Good Life” is always true, but Ecclesiastes and especially Job show how reality is much more complicated and unfathomable than that. It’s not refuting the wisdom of Proverbs but it is calling the reader to a deeper humility before God and creation.

Using one of my favourites series to educate me more in the faith? Sign me up. Thanks for this so much. As a Catholic, I have sometimes found myself encroaching moralism but messages like these always keep me on track. Keep up the good work and may God bless you immensely. Subbed

Thanks for making these videos, Holden! I always learn something new after each one. Can't wait for a video of your thoughts on the Sound Of Freedom movie. I'll have my popcorn ready for the comments section. 😅

@@ThePopCultureChristian Its up to you whether or not you think it warrants a video. I just remembered you mentioned you enjoyed it during your review of The Shift. If anything, it'll at least drive up engagement, haha.
