Hey Mark, I hope you enjoyed your first pool session. I remember my first being rather overwhelming. So much to take in and try and enjoy at the same time. It's good to understand the dangers but mostly the theory behind them. Enjoy the rest of your course.

Very informative video. It’s nice to know that most of these problems can be avoided with proper training. I got certified in South Africa but am from the Great Lakes area. I wish I knew someone to dive with out here

Where in South Africa did you get certified. I don’t know anyone in your neck of the woods but I know there’s some good diving. You should look up a local dive club. Always friendly people.

I think this is good for encouraging diving rather than putting people off as some people may see the dangers and be afraid to actually go diving but I like to think that it makes you pre-aware of the risks and how you can deal with them even before training. To me this is a great video for encouraging people to dive. Even if it is scary as all hell.

Good idea. I dont know much about Australia but the UK you need a good reason to have a knife and you need to show your intent. If your intent can be questioned then it can be classed as illegal. For example taking a dive knife to a dive site, no problem. Taking a dive knife to go shopping, not so much.

Thank you for the video, Mr. Paul. I will be taking my Open Water Dive course this mid-September and I have a lot of things I fear about scuba diving, especially mask squeeze and eardrum rupture. Thanks to your video, I am able to figure out how to avoid these scenarios.

years ago i ve done the padi open water, and some years later i went diving in cuba. my diving gear was losing air between the air tank and the first stage. it wasnt much, but constantly bubbling a little. i aborded the dive after 5m. was it necessary to abord or would it have stopped when going deeper? im still wondering after years, since the people on the boat were barely speaking english.

I can only imagine the people who first discovered diving all got seriously messed up. Jeez. My Dad was a Scuba Dive instructor, the more I learn about scuba diving I just don't think I could do it.

That’s great, I’m sure you will enjoy the course. Yes at the surface it’s quite easy to clear your Eustachian tubes. The pressure of the water will probably change things a little. But if you can clear them easily that’s great. Enjoy

what about equipment malfunction, where air isnt being delivered properly, whats the safety mechanism for that?

for nitrogen narcosis, if you have a strong tolerance for alcohol you should have some resistance against the effect of nitrogen narcosis? I drink beers and vodka every week and beers every day.

So I’m torn between the sarcastic approval response and the responsible instructor response. In every area of my life it would be sarcastic approval but online where hundreds of people could take me seriously if they don’t read between the lines I think I’ll abstain.

I’ve always wanted to scuba dive and I’m going on a trip to Hawaii and there was a scuba diving activity and I told my family I wanted to go and then they started telling me everything that could go wrong and made me not wanna do it but one day I will, but with some training first

Do your family scuba dive? It can be dangerous but when you first go out you will dive with an instructor who will keep you safe. You should give it a go.

Scuba diving is less dangerous than rock climbing or even hiking. Your family is either dumb, uneducated, wayyy overprotective, or they purposely convinced you not to do it because they’re trying to save money and they know it’s not cheap

When I’m riding bicycle in the city center, I depend on dozens of people‘s decisions. They do something stupid, I die. Know what you’re doing and scuba diving is a lot safer than that.

Can you give me a bit more detail on the air bubbles inside the body thing? Does that only happen when you ascend too fast? Also how can you check if you do need to use a decompression chamber?

You will always have gas or bubbles escaping from the tissue in your body. The point is that if you ascend quickly the bubbles form bigger bubbles quite quickly, before your body can’t disperse then or dissolve them back into your bloodstream for you to breath out. There’s more to it than that of course. You would typically feel a pressure in your joints, you might see bubbles on your skin, you could feel unwell. But when you’re doing recreational diving you always avoid the limits. The limit is the change between when you can ascend straight to the surface without decompression stops and decompression diving where you would need to make decompression stops to avoid getting decompression sickness. You never want a decompression chamber unless you are doing specific Technical or commercial diving. That’s a whole other ballgame.

Here’s the short answer: During a dive within recreational limits (140 feet & no-deco), you wanna ascend slower than 1 foot per second, and do a full 3-min safety stop at 5 meters (15 feet). Ideally, I ascend 1 foot per 2 sec’s & ALSO do a 1-min stop at 10meters

The bottom line is that the slower you come up, the safer it’s going to be. And you always need to come up slower than 1 foot per second, (that’s 1 meter every 3.1 seconds), and also do a full 3-minute safety stop at 5 meters

To accomplish this, you want to start ascending when you have 1000 psi left in your tank. Don’t wait until you have like 800 or 700, because then you might not have time to rise. The only exception is if you’re only like 10 meters down… then sure, you can start ascending with like 750 PSI or so. But always play on the safe side, you’ll dive longer

Ill be trying to get my adv cert tmr. I totally understand that the point of this video is to tell people that it'll be fine if you know the dangers but as someone who has had anxiety issues the thumbnail and the overall vibe of the video didnt help, it made me even more anxious about tomorrow. I'll be focusing on the positive takebacks from this video but i really hope the others wont be too affected by this vid. Stay strong guys!!

It’s like you can never fully relax and zone out in the vastness of the ocean and stare at animals, you always have to stay on your ps & qs and stay fully aware of EVERYTHING! Scuba diving is like a medication who’s side effect is DEATH! With the amount of things that could go wrong when diving I’ve come to the conclusion that I could never. But watching these videos are so interesting to me! People who scuba dive, especially cave divers are very brave

Also can I like do diving professionally for about 2-3 years and then go post graduate and go back to a normal job but not give up diving completely. ( Maybe still do it but less than I used to do it) Is that possible?

That’s what I’ve done. I taught for a few years went back to study. Then worked for a diving magazine and eventually moved to London in the UK to do something entirely different. I still teach when I want and run this channel.

You don’t make much money doing scuba diving. I recommend getting rich by starting a business after college using your degree, scale your business, get rental properties, retire, and then you can start a dive boat business or just be a scuba instructor/dive master “for the fun of it”

For those scared, remember scuba diving is safer than driving on the highway. It's not 100% safe but if you know what you're doing you will be safe.

I doubt this statement is accurate. You need to compare it by time doing it rather than the total. One reason we have so many deaths on the roads that we have so many drivers (billions worldwide). Another is how much time each driver spends on the road. For many people its something they do every day. The average diver doesn't spend nearly as much time doing it as the average driver.

I think people do way more dangerous things every day. Most obvious example would be driving a car or truck for transportation. It is just the idea of drowning to death, possibly even slowly is unthinkable to some people, but I do not think scuba gear fails like this typically ever.

Melanie Black essentially lake lakes have the same dangers but there can be a few more. 1- If the lake is at altitude as in higher than sea level then there is a larger gradient in pressure between the water and the surrounding pressure. So you need to use different dive tables. 2- The other danger that comes to mind is that lakes are often a reservoir for town water. That means the water is piped down hill. If you go near the drain you can get caught in the vacuum. It's called Delta P and there are some scary videos you can watch on Delta P.

As a scuba instructor, my biggest pet peeve is when people call the tank "oxygen tank". They sound so uneducated, I hear it often with bigger youtubers (like Papa Jake) when they do something underwater related. I don't know how someone that gets certified still calls it oxygen.

The reason these KZreadrs do it is bcuz most people that watch trendy KZreadrs’ videos have about the IQ of a housefly. So the KZreadr purposely uses wrong terminology if he thinks it will sound cooler. They know better, but they dumb themselves down on purpose…

You can Dive Solo. If youre just getting started I would recommend that you dive with a buddy in a group led by a local guide. When you gain confidence then you can take a Solo Diver Course.
