You guys are awesome. I have a request. When you're done with Conan and the Hyborian age it would be cool if you guys could do a recap of the first Conan movie Directed by John Milius. The story of the final battle scene and the incredible detail Milius went into to show us how Two (ok, three) men could take down 36 is a masterpiece of cinema and storytelling.

I think this video its the best of the 3 you have done so far. It shows better the political machinations and constant factional fighting of different parties that make the longer Conan stories so fun, in my opinion. Also, how L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter can still tell really good stories, even if not at the same level of Howard, at the contrary of what the more purists fans seem to think. But that map is still bothering me. The geographical proportions feel weird at some places. Same with the size of some countries. And I still don't understand why the lands that would make the independent kingdoms of Nemedia and Brythunia, appear under the domain of Aquilonia.

For those wondering why there hasn’t been a Conan TV show or whatever, Conan is just cursed to not be on screen. How cursed? Well let me tell you a funny story: There was going to be a Conan original series produced by Amazon. And it was all planned out and ready to go… only for the CEO of Amazon Studios named Jennifer Salke to cancel it. Because she thought the show was too masculine. Yes. She canned a show because Conan is a man. A heroic one at that. It’s a decision that is coming back to haunt her as the showrunners for that project, Ryan Condal, would go over to HBO and make House of the Dragon. A show that would humiliate Jennifer’s pride and joy, Rings of Power.

What proof do you have that Howard read John Carter? I love John Carter and it wouldn’t surprise me if he did read it, I don’t think Howard drew upon it as an inspiration. Because if you ask me, he was more inspired by the oil boom towns that would pop up and collapse the minute oil would be found and depleted respectively. He would see a small accelerated version of the rise and fall of a civilization as a kid and applied it to a historical setting.

    Жыл бұрын

@@NathanCassidy721 That’s fair, but I did maybe misspeak. Carter is only slightly superhuman because the gravity on Mars grants him enhanced abilities locals do not have. @@Vandelberger You're right! I completely forgot that's how Carter got his "powers" and your comparisons make a lot more sense now. Also it's funny that you mention Lovecraft because there's a question out there on what is considered canon for the Conan works. It boils down to three different routes which are: - The Hyborean Age transitions into real history, which was Howard's original vision. - Conan takes place in the Lovecraft universe. - The Marvel Canon

Because people in Hollywood have no idea how to translate Conan into film. Which is funny considering comics have had no problem translating these stories. But I don’t trust current Hollywood/film to do it justice. Just to give you an idea, Amazon was going to do a Conan series and they had it all lined up only for it to get canceled by CEO Jennifer Salke because she thought it was “too masculine”. Yes, Amazon threw away a golden opportunity to get their own version GoT because Conan is a man. And to add insult to injury, Ryan Condal who was gonna direct that series would go on to create House of the Dragon. A show that would directly compete and embarrass Amazon’s Rings of Power.

When Howard died, he left many stories unfinished, and others were just outlines. L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter edited his stories and finished those that were incomplete or outlines. They are collected in 12 volumes by Ace Books. They also wrote some completely original stories to complete the saga, such as Conan the Liberator, Conan the Swordsman, and Conan: The Flame Knife. Many other authors also wrote Conan stories. Howard wrote the stories out of order, probably intending them to be told by the old King Conan. de Camp and Carter published them in chronological order, or what they assumed was this order, sometimes changing stories so they could be shoehorned in. There are also novel length Conan stories such as 'Red Nails.' This introduces Valeria, and is the only story she actually appears in. Howard's history of the Hyborean Age can be found in Volume I of the series above. I don't want to be objecting the lore quality of an established universe just out of hand, but in all its vastness and adventure the naming convention used in the Conan lore really breaks my immersion every time, you could call it the Achilles heel of the setting, it borrows too much from existing historical cultures to the extent that it casts a really long shadow over the original ideas it actually has... I understand that it's fantasy, it is supposed to create a precedence to the world that we know as history and all of us writers, established or obscure have the privilege of getting inspired by what already exists in our worldwide treasury of history and literature, yet it kinda sounds like the author imagined, well I'm the only one who knows about those stuff so nobody will ever notice, and didn't really bother to give it his own distinct flavour...

To be fair, the only reason Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan, started writing fantasy stories, was because he didn't had the resources to write historical fiction. He lived in an small Texan town with an small library. So even though he also has written excellent short stories and novellas about the real world past, like "The Shadow of the Vulture", he thought he would have an easier time not having to worry about historical accuracy if he created his own fictional setting. But he also was a very devoted fan of history. That's why everything has a named based on real historical places and people.

@@JohnnyElRed that makes senses, I also had the same problem before the proper practical accessible Internet comes around, to be honest I still consider myself a student in this, so my goal is in fact to bring up an argument so by the answers I receive I may learn something new, in this case, how much borrowing is still okay? Since I will be doing the same more or less each time I try to write something new...
