How Complex is it to Operate an Oil Pipeline System?

I've had this question both from folks who are not in the industry as well as high level executives in oil and gas. "Isn't it just moving oil down a giant straw?", "how can that be complicated enough to require automation?".
Well, if we combine transient hydraulics with elevation profiles, multiple receipt and delivery locations, different pump curves, different control valves, block valves, holding valves, different control schemes at each pump station - all of a sudden this gets quite complicated. Add in engineers asking questions and the phone ringing - it is quite complex to operate an oil pipeline!

Great explanation. Only thing I would add is the challenge of moving products compatible with drag reducing agents versus incompatible products.

That does add more complexity!
If we built refineries in Wisconsin to produce renewable jet, fuel, gasoline, etc. from 1,000,000 acres of corn is currently grown for ethanol production are the pipelines already there
I understand the pipelines will work to Wisconsin for jet fuel and gasoline, as long as the diameter of pipe is large enough

Same algorithm but seperate modular with center big hole as computational chinese to avoid single point of failure. always big hole center subsets. Simple for chinese.

Load balancer center big hole signal rate different. Highest speed not center inner. Lowest latency is center inner. Center outer is separate network. Same concept can apply to many things for engineering snobs.
