Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I read an article on Canada's pipeline situation, and am trying to understand the economics behind air barrels. What stops company A from selling off their over commitements to company B? Is it a logistics problem, a trust problem, etc? In short, I do not understand why airbarrels currently MUST exist when seemingly there is money to be made by selling off the extra commitments last minute. Wouldn't throughput readings give a decent estimate, allowing company A to consider it less risk to sell its over commitments to company B, rather than holding onto them? Cheers!

Thanks for making this available to the general public. I have always found the oil & gas and chemical industry fascinating. One trip I took I drove past the Marathon tank farm in Patoka, IL and later drove past Marathon's massive refinery in Cattlesburg, KY. I did some research and found out they were connected by a pipeline. It amazes me how they can cover so much distance and changes in terrain. Then when Keystone XL was in the news low and behold there was humble Patoka, IL again. I keep wanting to check out the WOOD RIVER REFINERY HISTORY MUSEUM. The Christmas lights on the pipes and tanks are quite the sight in Roxanna,IL as well. You mentioned the ethanol tanks. I have always heard you can't ship ethanol via pipe line, since it absorbs water. Is that still the case? I also had heard sometimes water is used to separate loads in the pipeline. Was that ever done and if so is it still being done? Thanks again.

I have been to some of the Marathon refineries too! I was at one just outside of New Orleans. Used to work in the industry.

Thank you for information. Does Crude oil need to be heated to help flowing during cold weather? If yes, What is the maximum temperature it need to be heated? Thank you

Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules. Most is not heated to get it to move but some may need heating because that particular mixture is more viscous (thicker) than other mixtures. In other words, the answer to this question is the same as the answer to most questions - it depends.
