How did the invite to Buckingham Palace come about? What did I say to the King? Does this make me a Lord now? (Sadly no). All the answers lie in today’s rather bizarre episode recalling a sequence of events that felt like a weird dream.

Never cut yourself short Chris. The first thing I thought when tuning in to watch the banquet was that, this would be a perfect event to have you and Sharla to attend. Then to my surprise, you were both there. I was so proud of you because this was truly an honor and they indeed deemed your contribution to Japan as a British citizen very important. You both represent a younger, current population of people bridging cultures. You indeed had a best selling book which many could never put on their resume. You both belonged there and I am more than sure you did a fantastic job.

Really great story, Chris. "Sir Chris." 67-year-old subscriber here. I've been watching you and Sharla and everyone else for many, many years. "New to the podcast" since you started showing it on KZread -- I haven't been one to use the proverbial "wherever you get your podcasts" stuff. My gosh, there are so many quality things going on in your videos -- the wit, the humor, the video and audio quality, the music, the sheer production quality, and THE FUN! Sharla has always had "her way" of doing things, and it's just so enjoyable to spend some time with her. Then all of the things you do with everyone else -- Wacky Weekends, the cyclethons, and it just goes on. I "cut the cord" a few years ago (cancelled cable TV) mostly because "there wasn't anything on" that I found worth watching. What I wound up watching most of the time has been plain-old KZread videos -- like yours. Really great quality stuff, every single day. And it's not like I'm some big fan of Japan or anything like that -- whatever you folks are up to, it's always well worth watching. Keep up the good work, and we'll see you next time!

Chris, you earned your invite to that dinner. Your presence was far more valid than certain outgoing failed pms and former pms, like cameron, who did everyone dirty. You have done some very silly videos, but then you really interesting stuff about various locations around Japan, and you tend to do it in a respectful way. That earned you the following you have here. And you built a life for yourself in Japan. What you and your freinds do make a country like Japan accessible and less daunting, demonstrating how treating people from a different culture with respect opens doors and gains freindships. Natsuki being a prime example. As an aside, when i heard that the Emperor was here for a state banquet with Charlie, (not sure if you've heard, new £20 notes have is face on them now) I thought to myself, wouldn't it be cool if Chris Broad was there too?, had a chuckle and forgot all about it until i saw Sharla's insta post last week. I laughed so hard, and then thought yep, they deserved to be there! Go ahead and crow, get it oit of your system. Write the first chapter of your next book about it.

You have definitely earned the invite. You are a great ambassador for all things Japan and promoting tourism to Japan from the UK. I'm so glad Sharla could go to as she is representing Canada in Japan and King Charles is still head of state for Canada too, so they got a double win. It is lovely to see you recognised and if there is a reciprocal visit I would expect you to be on the guest list for the Japanese equivalent. French is the language of the Royal Court (care of William the Conquerer!), hence a french menu. Keep the Kings private secretary on your Christmas card list, useful person to know.

He was already a well-established KZreadr with millions of followers when I wrote to him that I was studying Japanese. He answered with a long response of how he himself went about it. Yes, some or even most of it was probably previously prepared, but it was still extremely kind. Thus he inspires such loyalty.

And there may be some of that, but the more I thought about it the more I was glad, and to a certain degree proud that you were invited, as I genuinely believe that you do represent something positive about the UK/Japan relationship, and how KZread can be something more than clickbait drama reaction content. You constantly entertain, Yes but you also: Show respect to Japanese culture and people Show parts of Japan that need people to know about them and visit them Don't shy away from the problems that face Japan. And at a time when toxic KZreadrs are more of a thing, I think it is important to give kudos to KZreadrs are better than that, and show a realisation that you can and do help shape how a generation of people view Japan. So kudos to you mate! You deserve it :)

An amazing and once-in-a-lifetime experience, Chris! You definitely deserved it and it was fun hearing your stories. Thanks for sharing! And by all means, please keep talking about it to Connor and Pete 😂 The scene of them sat down on a street in Netherlands lamenting about the possibility was hilarious! Also, when I visited Buckingham Palace, they did explain why the menus were in French. But long story short, it's because it looks fancier.

Absolutely wild seeing this channel evolve over the last 10 years or so and seeing Colin in Japan end up in Buckingham Palace of all places. You've been here for a large part of my life and taught everyone here more about Japan than any Japanese politician could dare to imagine so it's very well deserved.

I can't speak for Sharla, but I can say many of us Canadians do not fly everywhere because it's insanely expensive. We drive for days and take ferries across oceans rather than fly sometimes.

Your chauffer experience reminds me of a family story from the eighties. The queen was visiting Canada, and holding a banquet for athletes. My niece, as a Canadian Olympic team member, was invited. Our family was far more excited and impressed than she was: "What are you going to wear?! " Niece: "Uhhh... a dress?" "Are you going to hire a chauffer?" Niece: "I'll probably just take the bus". In the end, her mother drove her. We watched it on local TV. In this long line of fancy limos, up pulls a slightly battered Toyota, and without waiting for a valet to open the door, out from the front seat pops my niece. wearing a simple summer frock. All in a day's work.....

And behind it all, lurking in the shadows, is Ryotaro, the secret Shogun of Japan otherwise known as Tokugawa Rissotaro. "Yes, puff up the ego of the Englishman. It will be more the sweeter when I send him crashing down! HOHOHO!!!" (laughing like arrogant rich ladies in a comedy anime)

Whether you truly internalize it or not, you have become a leading cultural ambassador between Japan and the English speaking world. KZread may be our funny video website, but it's also the current generations' forums and news centers, etc etc etc. You may say 'I'm just a KZreadr' but really you are a journalist whose work is superb enough to warrant international attention. Out of place though you may have felt, you earned it.

I think Natsuki would have charmed everyone at the palace! 😉 I remember when Charles and Diana came to Sudbury; I was stunned at how beautiful Diana was in person. One of the nurses that worked with me at the same company met Charles and shook his hand. He asked her a question and all she could do was point to a house and say "that's my friend's house" because she was too flabbergasted. 😂 I'm 64 and I definitely know what KZread is, I even put a few stupid posts up many years ago.
