How cats become infected with feline coronavirus, the virus which causes FIP

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Feline coronavirus (FCoV), which causes feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in a small percentage of infected cats, is shed in the faeces. FCoV infection occurs when cats ingest (or inhale) the virus. FCoV is very contagious and it only takes a tiny speck of contaminated cat litter to infect a kitten or cat.
FCoV lasts up to 7 weeks in the house (it is not as stable as parvovirus, which survives for a year, but is more stable than feline herpesvirus which only survives ~12 hours). FCoV is protected by faeces and cat litter (unless it has anti-virus properties). Outdoors, cats bury their faeces and FCoV is rapidly broken down in the soil. Cats do not seek out each others’ faeces, as dogs do, so there is a good chance of the FCoV dying long before another cat is exposed to it.
In this animation we meet Augustus, a healthy FCoV-infected cat, and we see how his faeces contains billions of highly infectious virus particles. Augustus will shed virus in his faeces for a few weeks or months, then will stop shedding virus: nobody might ever know that he was infected. Enter Plato, an uninfected cat who has to share a litter tray with Augustus. Even if the tray has been de-clumped since Augustus used it, it will still contain enormous amounts of coronavirus. The virus gets onto Plato’s paws as he covers his own toilet, and when he grooms himself, he licks virus off his paws and swallows it. We believe that the virus first infects the cells lining the small intestine (i.e. the epithelial cells of the villi). Once a cat is infected with FCoV, a battle begins between the immune system and the virus. Happily most cats who become infected only shed the virus for a few weeks or months, then stop. However, an unfortunate 5-10% of FCoV-infected cats go on to develop FIP.
The best way to prevent FCoV transmission is to ensure that you only bring FCoV-negative cats into your house. Allow your cats outdoors if it is safe to do so. If cats must be confined indoors, have at least one litter tray for every cat in the house-preferably in different rooms. There are cat flaps which recognise specific cat microchips: I use Staywell cat doors. Use covered or self-cleaning litter trays. Some people train their cats to use human toilets. It takes only a tiny speck of infected cat litter dust blown onto cat food for a cat to become infected, so keep food and water bowls as far away from litter trays as possible. In this animation there is an easily disinfected floor, and a dirt trapper mat placed near the litter tray, to capture microscopic particles of infected cat litter, but there are too few litter trays, so the cats had to share.
THE BEST CAT LITTERS TO HELP PREVENT THIS VIRUS
Research at catvirus.com has shown that the type of cat litter you use will affect the transmission of FCoV between your cats. No litter completely prevents FCoV transmission, but using a cat litter which tracks minimally, and which has some anti-virus properties, helps: we found that the best litter was Dr Elsey's Cat Attract. EverClean clumping and World's Best Cat Litter are also good. The worst litters for FCoV transmission are the wood pellets which turn into sawdust and track all over the house.

My cat had this, I still feel the need to cry whenever I think of her. Few weeks after she passed I still had dreams of her coming to my bed and wanting to sleep with me. It wasn't always nice, but give your pet all the love it needs. Wash your cat when it can't reach its furr anymore because of swelling and clean it when it goes to the kitty litter.

Callie Parker hey, I’m sorry for your loss. My cat recently fell ill and just looked terrible. He then left and was attacked by something. He came back all bloody and his thumb on his right paw ripped off. We rushed him to the vet and then his health declined very rapidly. He’s being tested. They did it today and we’ll know tomorrow if he has FIP. He also has a kidney infection and kidney stones. I’m terribly upset. My question is how did you care for your cat with FIP, how long did he last and do they go painfully? I am dreading finding out it came back positive. I’m trying to stay positive myself. I just want him home. It is the worst thing ever watching your animal suffer. Again sorry for your loss. Must of been terrible.

My husband and I adopted the sweetest 8 week old kitten from a local shelter in January and were devastated when he suddenly developed strange neurological symptoms 2 months later. Those symptoms began on a Wednesday and he passed away the following Monday. We vlogged his whole life: his adoption, whenever he tried new foods, when he met new people, etc, all the way until his death. We just buried him. We miss him like crazy.

Our cat just died moments ago as he lay on the couch. We stroked him and held his front paws in an effort to comfort him as much as possible. He did not appear to suffer in his last days and behaved somewhat normally except he wouldn't eat and was obviously getting weak. It was that damnable FIP, which I never heard of until he was diagnosed only four days ago. We got the blood test results on Monday, he died today, Thursday. He was such a sweet and loving cat. His little life was snuffed out way too early. (2-1/2 years) You would think with all the technology we have today there would be an antibiotic that would kill that virus and prevent the death of so many cats. I knew about feline leukemia and FIV. Our cat tested negative for those. When he wasn't getting any better our vet recommended another test for FIP, something our vet just told us about last week. Three different vets looked at him before we hit on what was wrong. The FIP test came back positive. In less than 4 days he was gone. We loved and cared for him during those last few days, never knowing for sure when the end might come. It was today. I couldn't bring myself to have him put to sleep. We let him live out his last days naturally and we loved him just as much as always right to the end.

There was one which talked about this one remote cave in Yunman or Yuman (I forgot) and they found bats with SARS like strains and coronaviruses. This was in 2017. This has been here for a while. The virus jumped the barrier of animal and humans and now look.

@ItsJustSoTrue This is a great question, thank you for asking it and for your encouraging comments. In my first research survery I found that if cats had survived for 18 months after their first exposure to feline coronavirus, their chances of developing FIP were very remote - though we see some older, teenage, cats go down with it as their immune systems age and can no longer fight the virus. One of the important things is not to stress the cats or kittens in the early days of infection.

@85lalala96 The seven week figure comes from Cornell Vet School, whom I trust. Actually FCoV isn't all that robust - it probably only lasts hours to days outdoors, but in the house it is protected by faecal matter and when it dries out it can last for some weeks. It is a horrendously infectious virus, making it difficult to clear from a group of cats - they keep re-infecting each other if there are a lot of cats sharing litter trays.

@tenten6134 Thank you for watching the video. Depends what you mean by living (I'm not sure I get your meaning, sorry.) Viruses are just protein plus DNA, or in the case of FCoV, RNA. The must hijack a living creature in order to reproduce (replicate) - is that what you mean? They cannot thrive independent of their host, but they can survive outside the body, which is how they get to find their next host, in some cases.

Our 2-1/2 year old male cat has FIP. It was confirmed today. Our vet has recommended we put him to sleep. He's been losing weight, has become weak and won't eat. The weight loss had been going on for a while, but his behavior only changed within the last two weeks, so we had a blood test done for FIV and feline leukemia. They came back negative, but he still didn't improve. The vet then recommended another test for FIP. That one was positive. I'd never heard of it until now. We're worried about him infecting our other two cats. It's so hard to think of putting him to sleep even though he's not well. We love him so much and he was such a sweet cat until just recently. He's still a nice cat, but we know he's not well. He's become lethargic and unsteady on his feet. He spends most of his time sleeping or just lying around. This is awful. We have indoor cats. They all have their own litter box, but now I'm worried about them, too.

@@SM-df9dv We had three tests done on him before we were sure what was wrong. He tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV. The last test was specifically for FIP but most people don't do it because it's expensive. Three vets looked at him before the last one recognized the symptoms and advised to get the FIP test which came back positive. He died 3 days later. We were told the disease is fatal and there is no cure although I've been told advancements are being made to treat it.

Heart goes out to you I had a cat with Fip maybe i can advise, its a sneaky disease it looked like cat flu at first. Cat started getting fevers and she wasnt moving properly which is how it got diagnosed, make sure the cat can move normally, see if there are any trials and that he or she doesn't gave secondary symptoms. My cats form affected brain. Got her put to sleep. I feel the cat didn't have adequate care as she had deteriorated so much.I have nightmares as a result. I dont know if I made the right choice. Get plenty of opinions and make sure pets comfortable. If its genuinely suffering and no options then probably put to sleep.

Dear Stephanie, Sorry to take so long to reply. I live in a very moist place where even our furniture goes mouldy sometimes but I haven't had my World's Best go mouldy on me, so I'm not too worried about alfatoxins. I do worry about them in dry cat food: in the makes that are cereal based (which is most makes, though not Almo Nature & Applaws). Also, I imagine a rescuer as caring as you are gets the wet litter out of the box pretty quickly - within 24 hours - yes? Keep up your great work! DA

@leavesontree3267 It would appear, from data of age distribution of FIP cases, that middle aged cats are less likely to develop FIP than kittens or the old. Prof. Niels Pedersen once said that it might be better to obtain cats and kittens from personal ads in newspapers than from a shelter - he was probably right, though it depends on the shelter.

@85nikki96 Thank you for watching our video. Steam cleaning will certainly get rid of the virus and vacuuming will physically remove some of the infection. It is also killed by domestic bleach (sodium hypochlorite, e.g. Domestos, eau de Javel, Miltons). The virus can survive for up to 7 weeks when dried up, and protected by faecal matter. It is extremely contagious, getting around the house on blown particles of cat litter, on our shoes, on poop scoops, etc.

We got news today that our 8-month-old kitten has FIP. Her abdomen is swollen with fluid and she is wet-sneezing. Our older cat's stomach briefly became distended shortly after the kitten came home. It then normalized. Last week the kitten's stomach became swollen. Who gave it to whom? If our kitten dies, should we not get another because the older cat carries the virus?

What happens now in my country is really weird. It seems like FCV has mutated or some new FCV is around. I have 3 domestic cats with FIP, they have developed simptoms almost at the same time, the first one has wet fip with ascites that became neurological after 37 days of GS treatment, the second one is dry fip with kidney damage and the third one is a 2-months-old baby with neurological simptoms as first simptoms. They did not use the same litter. Moreover between the first and the second case there was no contact at all. I am wondering how did they not only got the virus but also developed FIP simultaniously. My situation proves that it's not 'only a 5-10% cats develop FIP' or there is a new more virulent FCV pandemic among cats. Vets told me the number of cats with fip has arose dramatically in the past year, after the end of the Sars-cov-2 pandemic.

I had to put my 10 year old cat down due to FIP, he started to lose hair and become more anxious and the blood work looked fine in may but by november he had lost weight and was tested again and we found he had supposed liver failure, small kidneys and fluid was building up in his stomach and check to the point it had enlarged his body and become visible on the outside. His body started reacting to it like an allergic reaction as he began to get flakey skin and lose hair. Im so worried my other cat may have it due to litter sharing, the vet never mentioned it could be contracted this way and I wish I had thought of it sooner.

@85lalala96 Fifty percent of cats with FIP are less than 2 years old. Probably a combination of kitten's immature immune systems, and the stress they undergo (rehoming, neutering, etc) is what contributes to them having higher amounts of virus than older cats do. Sorry I don't understand your genetic question - do you mean the genes of the cat or of the virus? Thank you for your very kind comment about the video. It's part of my plan to eradicate FCoV! I believe in dreaming big!

@squeeky95 Thank you for watching our video. Feline coronavirus mainly inhabits the gut, but in a few cats (less than 10%) it does parasitise, and replicate in, white blood cells called monocytes, as we showed in our video Pathogenesis of FIP. Happily most cats remain clinically well and eventually they clear the virus, FIP only occurs in a few infected cats. I'd just prefer no cats to run the risk, and I want to eradicate the virus. To find out more, please visit my website: catvirus.com

@squeeky95 It has just occurred to me to wonder whether you're thinking of the parasite which infects feline red blood cells, destroying them? If so, that is something different - called Feline Infectious Anaemia, or Mycoplasma haemofelis, or Haemotropic mycoplasmas.

@85lalala96 Yes indeed - World's Best Original litter tracks the least of the litters which I have examined. However, no litter totally prevents FCoV infection. Allowing cats to toilet outdoors - even in an enclosed pen - is safer than having them indoors, sharing a litter tray from a FCoV point of view. (Though outdoors of course they may face other dangers.)

@MsZippity What awful news, I'm so sorry. The older cat may excrete virus for some weeks or months but then stop - most cats do stop excreting virus. Depending on which country you are in, there are tests for virus shedding. Give them both plenty of varied food - especially a little raw red meat every few days to keep their immune systems healthy. Bon courage, as the French say.

@stephaniecatlover01 I suspect you may be dealing with feline herpesvirus infection. Stephanie - are there too many cats in your rescue shelter? This is a frequent problem for people saving cats, especially during this financial crisis. A network of fosterers can be safer than a shelter in terms of infectious disease control. Avoid dry foods, and give raw meat daily or every other day: even a soup spoon a day will help keep their arginine blood levels up, and strengthen their immune systems.
