Animation requires a special kind of Foley sound: more heightened, and less bound by realism. Plus, when working on cartoons, Foley artists start from scratch with no production sound to match, which opens up a world of creative possibilities. Foley artists Sanaa Kelley and Monique Reymond showed us how they created cartoony sounds for “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Rugrats,” “Invader Zim,” “Teen Titans Go!,” “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness,” and more.
Sanaa Kelley is the owner of Reel Foley Sound in Costa Mesa, California. She has worked on cartoons like “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” “Scooby-Doo,” “Lilo & Stitch: The Series,” “The Wild Thornberrys,” “¡Mucha Lucha!,” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”
Monique Reymond is a Foley artist based in Los Angeles. She has worked on animated films and TV shows like “SpongeBob,” “Eight Crazy Nights” (2002), “Lady and the Tramp” (2019), “Penguins of Madagascar” (2014), “Avengers Assemble,” “Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.”

it is kinda sad how much focus we put on the actors and actresses when so many people doing different things that make a movie great are behind it.

The crews are really underrated but it is only logical. Actors are the faces that are in the bright spotlight, the rest is more in the background people don't think about. And if people don't think about it, they did a good job.

Yea, those are the things that are missing from fanmade animations online. They don't really think everything through and it's especially obvious in their sound design. They'd just randomly slap some SFX of other piece of fiction like anime and such

There is an extreme amount of creativity needed to look at one's surroundings and trying to macguyver a sound using it to sound like something else entirely. Or figuring out what you need to buy to best replicate a certain sound that is your goal. That whole process of filling a plunger up with paper towels and sealing with duct tape was honestly a really impressive solution

I've made a few student films, and I cannot over emphasize the use of environment natural sound/room tone, even just a silence and wind/air-conditioning. It makes a huge difference. I like to record different environments on my phone sometimes, mostly crowd sounds and nature (for example I have several from restaurants, the sound of cicadas by a highway, rainstorms, even a ren faire I went to a couple years ago) You don't have to record those yourself of course. Lol but just remembering to add it helps so much.

So much respect for sound design in shows and film. I never noticed how much it matters until I saw a higher budget show with poor sound design and it killed the whole thing. That show "Casual" is just so weird because there are zero sound effects of ambient noise, so it's like the audio equivalent of the uncanny Valley.
They should give her credit for the Mr. Krabs walk type beat🤣
Got into sound design for my animations and let me tell you....This alone is an art that can be displayed in a museum.
i was always so curious on how they made sounds that aren't common or normals sounds that you hear. like mr krabs' walk, it's definitely not a normal sound you hear often. im glad i could learn how. very interesting to me :)

Sound designing is surprisingly fun! I'm a solo game developer, and making foley is one of my favorite things to do because it's always a matter of improvisation and using everyday objects in creative ways to make the sound effects for my games. I remember when I was doing the coin collecting sounds for Deathly Descent, I tapped on a glass with a metal chop stick a bunch of times and then mixed the sounds that made together in a bunch of different ways to get slightly different but similar sounds for that.

Man, what a superbly creative, passionate, and hard work foley artists have! I definitely love it. I enjoyed so much to learn to do it back in film school... I wish I could experience it at leat once again. P.S. That foley artist is so fit and beautiful!
Let's talk real here about swords making "shhink" sounds for no reason. It's out of the scabbard it's not hitting any other weapon- someone's showing it into frame? SHHINK How else would you know it's sharp?
As a voice actor and someone who works with sound from time to time, this is fascinating
Actually, Mr. Krabs' walking sound comes from a stock sound effects library called Cartoon Trax Volume 1.
