How Carbon Pricing Can Save the World | Johan Eyckmans | TEDxKULeuvenBrussels

Most people probably don't spend their off days thinking about the possibilities that carbon pricing brings to solving global warming. But some do. Johan, who is one of these people, tells us why carbon pricing, although counter intuitive, is actually a very efficient policy tool to solve climate issues while increasing overall welfare for everyone involved. Johan Eyckmans studied economics at the University of Antwerp and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. In 1997 he obtained a Ph.D. from the faculty of economics and business of KU Leuven on the incentives of nations to form international environmental agreements. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Bravo Dear Pr. JOHAN EYCkMANS ! for your very good and instructive presentation about the subject We should apply the principle: "polluter should pay the right price" and this principle should apply to both producer as well as to consumers

Define pollution. You cannot. It is subjektiv. Get the grass out of my flowerbed and the flowers out of my lawn.

Businesses and CEOs are pleading for carbon pricing -offsets to pay to maintain their footprint, not to change it or decrease it; in other words, business as usual, not a real game changer.

The free market has consistently and utterly failed to address their activities contributing to climate change. There needs to be intervention to prevent disaster, and political institutions must implement carbon tax as a means of intervention.

What a disaster. I think differently. Investors who bet their funds on greener alternatives providing choice to consumers can rescue market quota from more poluting energy offering companies. Companies offering more polluting old alternatives need to invest on their own in updating their technology or lose at the market game. Not expect the little man to subsidize their technology shift. If capital is concentrated at a given part of society, do not come ask the little man for money they do not have.

Wrong. We need intervention from the climate saving incentives that are causing distressing life realities for the low income. They just paused the carbon pricing in Canada because people can't afford it. Is rather ppl be able to afford food a place to lately there head at night. The environment comes second

Do you seriously think developing and underdeveloped nations can afford carbon pricing? When it comes to international economy and trade, its all about money and profits.

So, we're gonna' have a carbon tax and punish all those big emitters. And, of course, these big emitters will swallow the increase without a whimper. Anyone who believes this should be committed. The carbon tax, as well as all subsequent increases (c'mon you really didn't think these large corporations were that altruistic?), will passed on to the ultimate consumer. Meanwhile, the government, at all levels, will soon realize they have a new cash cow to milk. Perhaps, as a senior citizen who gets his carbon tax rebated, I should be out there campaigning for the tax to be tripled just to boost my income. It's just that I can't stand to see any government (I distrust all of them with every fibre of my being) conning the public.

Yes - if you look at countries that have implemented carbon tax you also notice that they have healthier environments - less polluted air. America has preferred cap and trade - not as effective in my opinion. Of course having great policy writers is important

Misuse of the concept "marketfailure". He obviously assumes that experts make better decisions than the markets. Unless the "experts" are continuously hiding information from the market, there is no market failure here. Only a market where the majority of players disagree with him politically.

The global population is actually predicted to stabilize as more and more women are educated, leading them to have children later in life and fewer children overall. And population growth is not the primary driver of global warming, as most population growth occurs in developing countries where people consume less on average.
