How Car Models Are Made? (Mega Factories Video)

Ғылым және технология

Clay modeling (or clay model making) for automobile prototypes was first introduced in the 1930s by automobile designer Harley Earl, head of the General Motors styling studio (known initially as the Art and Color Section, and later as the Design and Styling Department).
Industrial plasticine is a modeling material which is mainly used by automotive design studios. It was developed as an industrial version of plasticine or hobby clay.
Industrial plasticine is based on wax and typically contains sulfur, which gives a characteristic smell to most artificial clays. The styled object can be used to create moulds. However, largely because sulfur interfered with some mould-making processes, especially if clay surfaces are unsealed surfaces and platinum-cure Room Temperature Vulcanization silicone was used, sulfur-free variants are now available; these are usually much lighter than sulfur-containing clays.
More recently, clay models are 3D scanned into a digital file using laser technology. This is then opened in Computer-aided design software to be worked further. If a negative mold is required, this data is sent to a milling machine.

The tactile impression is very important. No other way to really make it 3D. In fact, textures should also be added.

@@engineeringworld. Surface qualities such as rough, ribbed, smooth, soft, flexible, waffled for the interior and possibly also for the exterior. Perhaps specially ribbed surfaces can themselves improve aerodynamics or water drainage on the outside. It is an idea to try / discover new possibilities. I am not an expert in car design.

This process is absolutely mind numbing!! What do they do with the clay models once the design has been approved?? The human imagination is the most powerful natural resource we have on the planet. Absolutely every aspect of this process was born out of the imagination. Incredible!!!

We typically recycle the model by reusing the foam and chassis underpinnings. If the foam is too old where the glue holding everything together is starting to separate, then we'll refoam the model, undercut it, repack with fresh clay, mill, and sculpt accordingly.

Clay versus 3D printing: Clay is more ergonomic where the maker can see, feel, and explore and not just for the look but also how the created piece is fit for human use and if it can be manufactured and assembled.

    1) how the heck did they fit the interior design into the clay model body? 2) how do they go from the clay model body, to the actual steel body?

I design cars, if anyone needs a new design. I'm working on one now that will be a cross between a 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 and an AC Cobra. It will be a 4 cylinder front wheel drive configuration. A Hybrid and all electric would be forthcoming. The engine will be a 750 HP version of the Focus RS turbo. Lots of aluminum and carbon fiber should make the car see 200 MPH top end as well as 0-60 in

Seems like it would be much easier and less time consuming to 3d model by software instead of clay. They clearly already had the chassis and base determined, if a detail is not right just tweak in software and print that specific part anew.

while 3d models can be used to simulate and digitally test the aerodynamics and more details... clay model helps to do the same physically. For safety issues, any company cannot just rely on computer generated data to proceed for many stages of production of the vehicles. This is a "Necessary" part of the process.
