    Most of time the answer is ''you re not ready to face a violent attack'' a lot of people talks about the flee or fight,but they often forgot the freeze, someone trained to face violence will react on automatically. In France we had a knife attack in Annecy, so unless you re well trained and prepared, most of the population will either freeze or flee.

    True, but there is also being aware of your surroundings and not presenting yourself as a threat. Short of some crazed killer, even a potential attacker is constantly reassessing what to make of you. Stupid things like being exceedingly polite has gotten me out of several hairy situations (it was beneath them to attack me).

    You're right. It can all happen faster than anyone realizes. Twice I've been a bystander caught in the middle of shootouts that happened between moving cars. By the time the innocent bystanders realized it was gun shots and not a car backfire, the gun fight was already over.

    Agree with everyone else that running is the first option. But if you can't run, the second option would be to grab anything you can to use as an improvised weapon or shield. In a house or restaurant, use a chair, on the street, use a garbage can, any object. If you can't grab an object, use stationary objects such as cars, light poles, traffic signs, etc. to dodge behind, and look for opportunities to run or attack and get in close. You can also use a jacket, purse, belt or other object to swing and try to entangle the sword. Almost anything is better than bare hands. Not as good as the sword, but better than nothng.

    I would like to add a tactic that is useful for catching the gap between attacks. When you force your opponent to chase after you, you have a chance to exploit their physical forward momentum and mindset by abruptly changing directions and closing in on them. But it is tricky because it is an additional timing on top of their attack timing and being too far or too close as you change direction will easily lead to disaster.

    Which is why it isn't a used viable tactic. There are so many others that you can utilize instead of something risky for a party trick. This is coming from my experience from subduing prisoners who used make-shift weapons on guards.

    Even in the United States where I can legally carry a firearm, my first tactic (and most suggested one) is always to break contact and run away. Only if he chases me down or I have nowhere I can run to do I draw my gun.

    Respect for the victim 🙏 rest in peace 🕊️😢. My first defense lesson was "if you are not there ? They can't hurt you". Learn to avoid dangerous places and people ! There is self defense system from Israel 👍👍👍 "Kalah" , is very scary, fight to survive, rescue family, save home 🏡. You stand humble like praying 🙏 "please sir I only want peace". Your arms are held high ( to protect your body and neck ) and ready to react "IF !!!**" There is opportunity. Train to expect to be cut badly but survived 👍🕊️. Grabbing the blade is correct 💯 but this will make serious wounds ( less harmful than a thrust or full swing). You must be like iron mind 💪🧠. Any mistake or scare / hesitation could be fetal last mistake. I had bandit 👀 chase me 😱 he say "I shoot you 🔫 and begin to put hand inside his coat 🧥. Me 😱🧠💪💪💪 must react instantly !! I take cans of pop and throw at his head 🗣️ then charge fast 😱 . I use my jacket 🧥 just to slap his face and cover his eyes 👀. I manage to knock him down (Rugby player) then turn him over to face the floor and pressure on his arm with my legs and 💥 can into his face 💥💥💥. I was very lucky I am very well trained and he was not fast. My thoughts were - he probably bad aim ? I probably survive one shot 💥 BUT if I wait ? He will aim carefully and not stop ! 🤔 Surprised you did not say or use your jacket 🧥 / any material may swing into the face or tangle the blade ( any advantage MUST be used ). Throw dirt into their eyes 👀, spit at them and run at them 👍. Blind them with your fingers . Kick the groin , kick so hard they go into space 🚀. Become wise, horrible , terrifying animal or you will not survive. Look for anything to use as shield 🛡️ or obstacle. If there is a tree then run around it . Look for door to open. Train to survive not to look pretty ☯️🙏. I personally believe better for good people to carry weapons 🔫🗡️ ? Bad guys are normally lazy and not trained well. If unskilled bad guy meets trained Swordsman. The good guy is like police, can protect himself and others. Second time, three bandits 😱😱😱 want to take my bag and beat up two young boys and take thier bikes 😱 young boys very scared 😭😭🙏 . Thankfully I prepared 🧠💪 "these are my throwing knives 😠😡 !!". You are not taking anything or beating anyone up. Last - carry SOMETHING !! ANYTHING !! Learn to use a stick , bottle, can , jacket 🧥, bag , dog mess as a weapon and use WISDOM. You can't save anyone else or yourself if you act like fool. Much more needs to said and learned. Even as a young boy I was exposed to great dangers. We used books as body armour. Towel and chicken wire against bats , knives 😢. Think I'm probably only alive because of "all my teachers ☯️🙏 and training almost every day of my life. Wash, train, sleep, repeat

    At my age and health, running away is not an option. If I recognize the threat soon enough, I can walk away effectively enough. If I see someone standing in an aisle at the store holding a sword and seeming to be insane or with bad intent, I'm not going down that aisle unless I have a firearm. Even then, I probably only go down that aisle if I feel that doing so is necessary to protect someone else. My first instinct will be to summon store management and law enforcement. If I can't avoid a physical confrontation by leaving the area before the person notices me, I will use my cane to try to delay the attacker while I draw a firearm. A firearm is no guarantee that I survive the encounter. Someone who is determined and has a katana may receive fatal shots but still keep going long enough to kill me. My only consolation is knowing that if I put the attacker down, the attacker won't be able to harm anyone else. If a firearm isn't available and I can't escape notice, then I would hope to find an improvised weapon. If I'm in a grocery store, I would try to find something on a shelf that I could throw at the attacker. If I'm in an aisle with lightweight items packaged in paper or plastic, I probably can't survive. If I'm in an aisle with heavier items in glass jars or metal cans, I might have a better chance. If I'm in an aisle with cleaning fluids in some kind of spray container, maybe I can spray the attacker in the eyes.

    @@juilescieg I don’t think grabbing the blade is better, as they suggested. But to your point, you have to counter at the right time and on the right type of miss. Test their swings first using feints. If they overextend you can time your kick to the knee area and get them on the ground, so you can make your escape. And if you’re in a locked room, kick them while they’re down. Very hard to swing a sword when downed.

  • @DarkwarriorJ

    @DarkwarriorJ

    How strong is your kick? Are you wearing steel-toed boots at the time? Reason I ask is that I suspect you are rather overestimating the power and efficacy of your kicks. Against someone standing straight as a stick, it might hurt thanks to the leverage against the joint, but if your attacker even larps anything resembling a fighting stance, I suspect it's not going to do much of anything. Assuming your leg has the range to do so in the first place, since even an edo era katana has a blade length comparable to most of a leg, before account for how it's held outwards. By contrast, grabbing the blade shows up repeatedly in historical manuscripts, since swords need to be in motion to cut effectively. Of course, that's usually in the context of a bind with another sword; any armed vs unarmed confrontation is basically trying to go from guaranteed death to 99% chance of guaranteed death. Kicking is reasonable advice against much shorter weapons such as knives though. Grabbing a knife is nearly impossible, and legs clearly violently outrange it.

    @@DarkwarriorJ Fair point. I’m a martial artist and I know how to deliver that type of kick - and I don’t even need shoes to break a kneecap, especially if my opponent isn’t expecting that strike and doesn’t know how to check it. I guess the moral of the story here is, get some proper self defense training, and sword training as well as a bonus, so you know what sword entails (I practice kenjutsu and did fencing in the past). But plan A is to keep distance and diffuse the situation, and leave (run if you have to). Plan B is what I described initially.
