How Can I Pray Without Ceasing?

A woman who had given up attempting to pray without ceasing after many years of devotional practice has decided to try again after recently hearing Rupert talk on the subject. She asks him for guidance.
Rupert says: ‘Like you, I spent a lot of time trying to pray unceasingly and found it frustrating. I noticed that I continually forgot God’s presence because I was giving my attention to something else. I then realised that praying without ceasing is not literally repeating something in your mind, but an attitude of the heart.
‘Later, when I recognised that there is no being in me other than God’s being, I saw that the idea that I could somehow pray or have this attitude towards God was still coming from the sense of separation. This made it clear to me that praying without ceasing is not something we have to do, it is what we are.
‘We are this unceasing prayer, this devotion to itself. It doesn’t have to be something we do with our thoughts or even an attitude of the heart, although both are beautiful. To pray without ceasing ultimately means just the shining of being in the midst of experience. Right now, being is shining in the midst of experience - that’s God’s presence.’

THE PRAYER: Oh my Lord, my whole being is yourself. This mind which has been given me is your consort. The life force, breath, and energy which you have given me are your attendants. This body is the temple in which I worship you. Whatever I eat, wear, or do, are all part of the worship I keep performing at this temple. Even when this body goes to sleep at night I feel I am in union with you. Whenever I walk I feel that I am going on pilgrimage to you. What ever I speak is all in praise of you. In fact, whatever I do in this world in any way is all aimed at you. So there is no duality in this life of union with yourself.

There are few statements, that, Nisargadatta has made, that would put Rupert and others alike out of business for good. Not only it would put almost all, if not all non-duality circles out of business, but, it would put selling God out of business. Nisargadatta's statements concerning the Absolute Nature of Existence makes it impossible for religion and its ideologies to survive. Statement 1 "The Absolute is prior to consciouness ". Statement 2. " The Absolute, being prior to consciousness I AM , prior to the knowledge I AM, doesn't know that IT IS". (He negates all knowledge, including all self knowledge) Statement 3 " The Absolute is prior to God (Brahman )". ( he also acknowledged that people refer to consciousness as God). Putting an end to selling the deity God or consciouness as the Absolute Truth of Existence. Statement 4 " knowing, knowingness or knowledge are all fraudulent, it is the knowing that has brought all the mischief in the world ". Statement 5 " It is consciouness, knowingness, which is the knowledge "I AM" that appears first, and disappears last". ( That knowledge "I AM" , is what Rupert and others have been marketing and selling as the Absolute Truth of Existence) ,originating from religion and its ideology. Statement 6 " There is no such thing as an experience of Reality (The Absolute ). This makes it impossible for anyone to market using experience or claming something experiential, concerning the Absolute Truth of Existence. Somebody like Rupert or others alike might wonder, what is it that knows the Absolute? And, Nisargadatta rebukes simply by saying that the question itself is coming from Ignorance. Because, consciouness being the only instrument of knowledge , who or what is there to question prior to the instrument of knowledge? That is prior to consciousness . Makes it impossible to question, once its understood. If you examine Nisargadatta' s understanding, it is closer to science than, religious or spiritual ideologies. These statements shows, when it comes to the Absolute, it has absolutely nothing to do, with religions, religious ideologies, most non-duality teachings selling God or consciouness. The simplicity concerning the Absolute is simply astounding to say the least. Many are busy marketing many claims, all claiming to know the Truth of Existence as how it really is. Self deception comes in many forms. Often as ear candies like sweet poems, pleasing the ear, but, to only end up in deceiving oneself and Existence Itself. One can never be too careful, or contemplative enough when it comes to the Absolute true nature of oneself or Existence as Is in Itself.

@@ahmednasser9962 Without the instrument of knowledge or consciouness, who or what is there to meditate on what? Consciouness in the form of religion and its ideologies, personifying itself as a Deity has done more damages to humanity throughout history and it continues. It has no place, when it comes to the Absolute. All fears of death, is actually coming from consciouness fearing its own disappearance, fearing the end of experience, losing the knowledge of its own existence. As if refusing to return to the Absolute by surviving with some subtle something experiential, indicating its existence. It may succeed in projecting all sorts of subtle experiences to perpetuate experience. I had numerous obes when I was little. Consciousness can projec all sorts of subtle experiences easily and instantly in that state. It can survive many subtle states to perpetuate experience. It's helpful to understand consciouness as the shadow of the Absolute. Just like your shadow, when you go outside. A shadow which distorts Reality by its own nature. Whenever there's consciouness, there's suffering. Countless life forms are being eaten alive at this moment, and every moment, screaming in pain from the top of their lungs to absolutely no avail and yet, it's driven to survive. By what? By consciouness Itself, fearing the disappearance of experience which is its very nature. The shadow. If Nisargadatta is correct, then, the disappearance of consciouness , absolutely guarantees the end of suffering, which is the end of experience. But. If consciouness is still there, then, experience is still there, ready to project . Obviously. It is very likely that life and its survival function on self deception. In that sense, we can say consciouness is life. Self deception comes countless forms, selling experience as the mother commodity, often as ear and eye candies to insure its survival . The Absolute Nature of Existence is most likely prior to experience. We can never be too careful or be contemplative enough , when it comes to the Absolute true nature of ourselves or Existence as It really Is in Itself. You take good care of yourself!

@@ahmednasser9962 In a way ,yes and no. Meditation only from the point of view of consciouness. After all, consciouness has the capacity to reflect on Itself for all kinds of self knowledge, often, disagreeing on its own experience thru many individuals. Being a shadow, distorting the Absolute, it's unstable and, it's nature is suffering. As one brutally honest philosopher put it " Every history of life is the history of suffering ". In that sense, we can say that consciouness is life. Whenever there's suffering, there's consciouness. No experience of suffering is possible in the absence of consciouness. Very obvious. It is highly likely, that life that drives survival, functions on self deception. By consciouness, thru consciounessand as consciouness. . One can never be too careful, or be contemplative enough, when it comes to the Absolute true nature of oneself or Existence as Is in Itself. You take good care of yourself!

I just think it is so wild how Rupert Spira seems to have so totally hit upon the way to speak of these topics in such a clear, contemporary, simple, experiential manner that both totally validates all the classic literature, but just brings it all up to date without anything "supernatural" or "metaphysical". Just the "be here now" the "no-self/no-thing" the "Al-Llah" (in this video)... wow! It is all so validating, confirming, encouraging, instructive and directive in the best way.

I have been fond of Shankara and Advaita Vedanta since my college days. What follows is not mine. It is something I found just now with some online research using today's amazing handheld computers called smartphones. In Hindu belief, the title "Shankaracharya" is traditionally associated with the leader of four monasteries (mathas) established by Adi Shankaracharya, a revered philosopher and theologian who lived in the 8th century. The Shankaracharyas are considered to be spiritual successors of Adi Shankaracharya rather than reincarnations of specific persons or deities. Therefore, Shantananda Saraswati would be seen as a spiritual leader in the lineage of Adi Shankaracharya rather than a reincarnation of a particular person or deity.

By Gods grace, there was a time when i experienced an unceasing prayer. This was when the heart was beating with Gods name constantly, unceasingly. No matter what i was occuopied with, i would stop and check by just being silent and still, and i would hear, sense and feel the heart reverberating with the the name of God - Allah, Allah, Allah, on its own without me initiating it in anyway. All praise and than thanks be to God for that.

Yes that is a high station in Sufism, as was my initiation. A wonderful man spent time in a room with Ghandi & heard ‘Ram’ continually reverberating… looking for the source of this silent emission of the name of God he realized it emanated from Ghandi himself, having repeatedly it inwardly until it was his vibration
