We are all imperfect...when we have that encounter with God, he can help us turn our lives around from our desires to his. Keep asking him the rest of your life, to help you stay strong( through his strength) against those addictions. Where we are weak, He makes us strong. We all need C hrist, but until we have that true relationship, we don't realize it. Glad to hear you have more peace now.

When I was younger, I saw hell written all over my oldest brother's face when he violently beat up my older brother. I also saw later on very clearly the darkness in my own heart and it humbled me. I am sure God was behind all that. At first it was painful but I knew what God had shown me was real. It was God showing His love to me and led me to look to Jesus Christ.

We are given free will. We can choose to do bad or good ourselves. NO ONE made your brother evil. It was his own doing. People need to learn that no one causes anyone to fo bad things. Its their own choice to do so. Look to reality and fix the problem. God or Satan should not be the reason for your problems

Why God would do that and then send people that are made on his own image by him now he is going to send them to the lake of fire for eternity!! I think that we have been misled for hundres of years. I know that there is a Creator because I can see His beautiful Creation but I don't think that a perfect loving heavenly father would aloud them to go to hell.

Dear toughmummy (from a mummy and granny in London). Christians who believe that God, eventually, will save everyone, are called "UNIVERSALISTS". They believe that there is a hell but that it is not eternal. What would be the point in this?? That's a solid question if you believe in free will of the creation. God gives us free agency, but our will is enslaved to sin. The reason the New Heaven and New Earth will be free from that issue is because of the cosmic power we cannot fathom that put an end to sin and death on the cross. A better question is how did Lucifer fall? And take a 3rd of the angels with him? We're not told. But I believe it was something far larger than we can grasp, as is everything God does.

The problem is people don't believe they are going there. So how do they consciously chose it. If they could look down and see hell do u think they really would chose to go there???

I do not believe in an eternal torture chamber Hell but for arguments sake I will consider it. People would not be moved by looking down and seeing Hell. The mind is very tricky. They would think that it is a hallucination or that they certainly are not bad enough to go there. The power of the carnal mind is real.

A good observation. I think it really speaks to the hugh problem inherent with religions and their method of transmission from one generation to the next. A person who dies before they have developed enough to understand good from evil or the concept of hell would ostensibly be exempt from the punishment of hell. An all powerful God would certainly have the ability to "program" our minds with the certainty of his nature and existence. This would remove the faith element which I have never understood the importance of. For example almost everyone in modern society knows that smoking is bad for health as are certain foods. By contrast most know that sufficient rest and exercise are beneficial. However, this knowledge guarantees nothing in terms of which habits are adopted and seems to have little influence. Why does God's nature or existence have to be faith based. Absolute knowledge of God's nature and existence would still leave exactly the same choices on whether or not to obey him or seek a closer relationship, free will would not be compromised one bit. The assertion that faith is necessary in the process is so demonstrably false and ridiculous. It's painful to see faith held as a virtue in our society and even more painful to see hell used as a tool for those in power to exert control of others. If there were a hell, those who have used it to threaten and manipulate would be the most worthy. I don't condone the concept at all mind you, there is no finite crime that deserves infinite punishment in my view.

Hitches was a master at using rhetorical methods and using polemical and satirical arguments against faith. However, in an honest examination, Hitchens logic and verifiable contents of were relatively weak, filled with ad hominid attacks. Although he was funny, his presentations contained many logical fallacies.

Do you think Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will go to hell when they believe in him, love him and want to go to Heaven.

So the young man who came to you was troubled by the idea of hell and his "problem" was to think that people are basically good?? And you tried to talk him out of it?! This is how horrible evangelical christianity is. The "good news" is that alot of the people we love will be in torment forever, whilst we "enjoy" heaven. How on earth I would enjoy heaven with my loved ones screaming forever is beyond me. It is cruel. Whether you're a 14 year old who has hardly lived, or a 100 year old makes no difference, you're off to hell if you don't believe. All those people you mentioned killed by dictators, most will end up in hell. I could never worship such a God.

The outlook that everybody is inherently good as being wrong is so true. It was pretty easy for me to accept the concept of sin since I realized early on in life there was a duality with humankind. We have done, are doing, and will continue to perform acts that will hurt others. If humans were innately good, the world would not be the way it is. Even the good acts that people do are often for ultimately selfish means instead of simply out of the kindness of their heart. And when the Bible goes more into what exactly constitutes sin there is no way you will not sin in your life because what is labeled as sin is innate in humans. The quicker a person can realize that they are not all that and a bag of chips and get down on their pedestal the better humanity will be. Pride is one heck of a killer.

It's not an easy process to be confronted with your sin, but if people get past that and seek help from God, life is so much better and hopefully the afterlife as well... we're a fairly callous bunch.

Contrary to popular belief, God doesn't micromanage our creation as an embryo. Our parents have sex, and we're created through a natural process that He created. Of course God knows which human will end up of each embryo, but He's not actively creating it. That would mean that God creates people who are blind, or mentally retarted, or have down's syndrom or they 're disabled. That's nonesense. All this is not God's creation but mutations caused by our fallen nature. So no, God didn't actually create you. And yes, He knows where you'll end up, as He's all knowing. But that doesn't mean you're predestined to go to hell or heaven. You're free to choose your actions, but whatever these might be, God simply knew them already.

Yes, many a time He turned His anger away, And did not stir up all His wrath; For He remembered that they were but flesh, A breath that passes away and does not come again. In fact, Jesus commanded us to forgive each other unconditionally. Are we being held to a higher standard than God himself?

An all powerful being who is perfect would not punish imperfect beings for being imperfect. Everyone will be saved, a high conscious being would never unnecessarily torture the lower consciousness for it would be a low consciousness action in itself and contradict God's being.

The way I see it is God don't send no one to hell. People have a choice they send them self to hell. Is like if I tell my kids don't do this is bad has consequences. They go and violate the law and go to jail. Did I send my kid to jail or did I tell him don't do this because has consequences. My kid sent him self to jail and eventually will see that him self.

I would think that someone who was a Christian for a long time (and who supposedly knows what s/he is talking about) would know that - partly because it is not only fairly basic doctrine but also fairly basic logic. You might check out 2 Corinthians 10:5, as well as Isaiah 55:8-9. It might help clear up some of your confusions (of which you have many, based on what you have said). While you’re at it, check out out these verses. They all help to paint the picture. Genesis 15:1 1 Samuel 16:7 Matthew 7:21-23 Job 11:7-9 John 10:10 James 1:14 (Btw regarding you having been a Christian for a long time and (supposedly) knowing what you’re talking about - you might glance at Proverbs 11:2). Lots more I could mention - like I said, I could write a book about the problems with your claims. But I’m going to leave it at that. This “conversation” could drag on and on and I get the feeling that that would be futile. So I’m moving on. You can think or say whatever you want about me. Take care. Cheers!

Christianity is literally the poster child for dodging responsibility. It's central pillars being: "we are not worthy but, someone else's actions change the outcome. We deserve the wrath of God but, someone else took it for us." A responsible person can and must reject this scapegoating, and demand to be judged on the BALANCE of their own actions, good and bad. Christianity seems to be the near perfection of narcissism. It is a view that the entire cosmos and everything that exists was brought into being so that a particular subset of primates on a tiny spec in a non descript little neighborhood of a solar system could enjoy a personal relationship with the supernatural creator of it all. Further implications being that the vastness off the universe is merely there for humans to be in awe of and that all other species that currently inhabit our little spec of dust or who have come and gone into extinction were simply making cameo appearances in our play to spice up the scenery a bit. I don't have the stones to pull off the Christian humility, and I honestly don't understand how those with the stones to pull it off manage to walk.

I can't think of a bigger insult to a creator than to say that all of its creations are bad.

That is an interesting thought. God clearly reveals that all that He created was good in Genesis 1:31. However with disobedience, sin entered the world and as Isaiah 53:6 says, "All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." And Romans 3:10-12 "As it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.'”

@@samrhodes3510 According to Christianity, we are all sinful by nature, which then begs the question, "Where would the responsibility lie for the nature of created beings, and for any differences between them?" Which, if answered honestly, could only be - "The responsibility would lie with their creator." I understand why you, like all Christians, would like to protect the supposedly "perfect" reputation of God, and give yourselves credit for supposedly "choosing" salvation, but your own doctrines render him responsible for our nature, and thus for our sinfulness and for any differences between us. By the way, the belief system that asserts that the bible is the word of God is only held by those who believe, first, that a god exists, and second, that it is the god of the bible. Ultimately, all you have then is an opinion, and one which is not shared by most of the world.

Nothing has changed in our current time either....If someone has a teenager, and that teen goes out and gets in trouble , does something "bad" even though his parents raised him not to be that way, it is ultimately the individual' s fault for their own choice of actions.

Jesus said this is the verdict: light has come into the world but people love to sin in the darkness more than the light.

So God creates two eternal domains to accommodate your spirit in the after life. One domain is beautiful, peaceful, and pleasurable. The other domain is the worst pain that you could possibly foist on a human being - a literal firepit of liquid hot molten metal that you are dunked into. If you're "perfect" you get to go to that first domain. If you're imperfect, if you've so much as stolen a stick of gum when you were 5 years old or downloaded an episode of Baywatch from Pirate Bay, then you go to the second domain. Now God, he's merciful, he knows that would suck, so he's created an escape hatch where he can take on the punishment for you. So he comes down to Earth disguised as a human being and has himself tortured and killed for a few hours one day, and that's enough to make even-Steven the punishment that all of humanity for all of time deserves for all their sins. He provides virtually no leave-behind evidence for this plan, beyond a few lame, uncorroborated stories written by Bronze-aged goat herders. So now, with this loophole in place, the person who steals a stick of gum when they were 5 years old but doesn't accept the gift of salvation, they are tortured for all of eternity. But a lying, stealing, conniving, murderer rapist who accepts the gift of salvation, someone who just happens to believe in the right thing at the right time by pure luck, they get to enjoy an eternity of bliss and happiness. And this punishment/reward system is set up by this perfect all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful God of the Bible, the same God who condoned genecide, drowned millions of people in a flood, prescribed slavery, among many other incredulities in the Bible, all the while providing no tangible evidence that he even exists. Hmmmm. Gonna call for a judges ruling here ... Christianity is a false, man-made religion. It's not about rejecting a real God. It's about casting off these ancient superstitions that have held humanity back from real truth and progress.

My argument here is mean to show that even if God does exist, he has a horrifying character, and the features of his alleged Christian salvation plan are bizarre, poorly executed, and illogical. The problem that I see with your counter-argument is that you could justify any characteristic of God that you wanted to just by claiming that we humans are too small-minded to understand him.

We can't understand his Love and we can't even comprehend his Hate. We need to understand that this is his universe and not ours. I disagree with the notion of people sending themselves to Hell. Yes, they reject Christ, so it is their choice, but the Bible clearly teaches that God casts them out. God doesn't take pleasure in the destruction of the wicked, but He receives glory in the wrath poured out on evil. We can't elevate one attribute of God against another. He is angry with the workers of evil every day. And He so loved the world that He gave His only Son..

There are some major holes in Sean's interpretation of scripture on this issue. - Sean claims that God doesn't send people to hell but that people send themselves. This does not align with Luke 12:5 which shows God as the one literally throwing people into Gehenna. Also, Sean is incorrectly equating the choice to rebel with determining God's response to rebellion. Humans choose to rebel. Humans do NOT determine what God's response to rebellion will be. God and God alone chooses how he will respond. If people end up in hell due to their rebellion, that is because God has chosen to respond to their rebellion by throwing people in hell. -- No one would defend an abusive parent who said their child "chose" to be burned in hot oil because they talked back to the parent. The parent would be the one who chose to respond with excessive punishment, though not nearly as excessive as hell. - Sean says God is a respecter of persons and will not force someone to believe in Him. That is not correct if eternal hell is real. Saying "believe in Me or be burned alive forever" is not a free choice. That is extreme duress, similar to (but much more extreme than) a terrorist saying they obtained a "free" confession from someone while holding a gun to that person's head. - Ez 18:23 talks about the death of the wicked: they stop breathing. If you read the chapter, it is talking about physical death. Being burned alive in the afterlife is not a concept found in this passage. Why must Sean impose this idea on it? - At 6:18, Sean asks the wrong question. It's not "can't God just forgive," but "can't God just punish sin in a way that brings about repentance." Hebrews 12:6 says God takes this exact approach. Sean sets up a false dichotomy in which he imagines that God has only two choices: either burn people alive forever or do absolutely nothing to punish wrongdoing. The reality is that God can respond to sin any way he chooses. As already discussed, the Bible talks about God correcting people in a restorative way. The Bible also says that the wages of sin is death - not being burned alive forever, just death. This is confirmed in the OT as sin is atoned when blood is spilled. Neither the sacrificial animals nor Jesus were burned alive to atone for sins. They all simply died. - At the end of the video, Sean asserts that Jesus taught about hell, which I believe is invoking the name of the Lord in vain (claiming Jesus said things He did not). According to the Bible, Jesus warned the Jews about being thrown into Gehenna, and we know that Jews were indeed thrown into it in 70AD. Curiously, Jesus did NOT warn Gentiles about being thrown there. Neither did Paul, who claimed to have preached the entire gospel. Paul only mentions Hades one time, just to say that Christ has victory over it. - Another major flaw in Sean's interpretation is that the OT does not talk about burning people alive in the afterlife. In fact, the prophets spend chapters (and chapters and chapters) talking about the consequences of sin, but all of the consequences they mention are catastrophes IN THIS LIFE. Think about it: God sends his chosen messengers to warn people about what will happen if they rebel, but ALL of those messengers fail to mention the ONE consequence that really matters, the one that lasts for eternity! It's impossible to overstate how misleading the prophets were if eternal hell is real. Perhaps Sean has simply misunderstood Jesus' words about Gehenna. That's far more likely than the idea that God simply didn't warn humans about the "real" consequence of rebellion for most of human history.

Another thing I would add is that if your going to hell, that means you haven't accepted Jesus's forgiveness. Like imagine if you lied to your friend, they found out but forgave you, and then you rejected that. It's a fast way to lose a friend.

Believe it or not, judgement and punishment is a central pillar of God's love. A God that wouldn't judge and punish evil, would be an indifferent God, one who does not care. He would also be a God who doesn't love His GLORY, and allows evil to enter into His kingdom. By condemning evil, God shows us His love for Justice and His love for Holliness.

... “If hell were real...” God did not create robots. That wouldn’t benefit humanity. God created humans that can choose. He didn’t put them in an absolute sterile environment without other options or they might as well be robots. The fall of Adam was not a shock or surprise to an omniscient God. The death of Jesus, his son, was not plan B. The creation of mankind is his most generous act secondary only to man’s redemption. God had to create a person that was capable of choosing and also had a will of his own. Salvation by faith in Christ’s death and resurrection is the mechanism by which a man can choose to subject his will to his creator. Doing so, he receives forgiveness of sin, eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which provides fellowship with his creator. It is the perfect plan to create creatures that are not robots, who have choice, whose will is not violated and then share himself with them. Some will persist in refusing him. It actually says God shows no partiality. (Esv) or favoritism (niv, nlt) The respector of persons is Kjv. But Don't forget the next verse: "but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." Which means that he takes what you choose seriously.

So if I lie one time when I was a very small child I deserve to suffer eternally in hell?

Not at all. No person deserves to be burned alive forever. Not even Hitler. Finite punishment for finite wrongdoing is just. Infinite punishment is neither just nor in line with the Bible.

If Christ meant for Hades/Gehenna to be a literal punishment of fire, darkness and pain, then he threw away the Old Testament, adopted the pagan Jewish myths 100-200 BC of Hades/Gehenna (1 Enoch, Judith), and he was just another rabbi of his culture.

The more difficult question to answer is how is it just to send even an evil person to eternal torments.

they could 'choose to not be evil' but they won't repent, its like if the train was leaving the station, and they said 'you have to board or you will be left here' and they refuse to get on, they will not be going to heaven, God is fair so he will give them opportunities to make amends and do whats right, but they don't have forever, 'the angels rejoice when someone repents'

@@wendymtzc I suppose you mean well (I hope) but you should read and think more carefully, and certainly be slower to attack Christ's own. How can a question be blasphemous? Many seekers have been turned off from the church because someone's Sunday school teacher or elder shamed them for asking a question. Its easier to point your finger and cry blasphemy than do the work and answer the hard questions. I never said, nor do I believe that any action of God is unjust. That is nonsensical since any idea I have of what's just comes from Him. I acknowledge that any degree to which God's actions seem unjust is due to my own sin and/or lack of understanding. I merely said it is a hard question and I stand by that. If you're to the point that there are no hard questions pertaining to the scriptures, I can only hope to attain your level of spirituality some day.

@@wendymtzc Of course I could be wrong, but my example of foolish questions (or controversies depending on the connotation one goes with) would be churches disputing over the color of the church carpet or something equally trivial. its hard for me to imagine a sincere question regarding the nature or acts of God as being foolish when there is a sincere desire to understand God and His nature better. As we move from the milk of the word to solid food, is this process not spurred on by prayerful questions, followed by God-given light, followed by increase of understanding?

I actually disagree with this. I don't have an issue with God sending people to hell. My thing is, having a place where "souls" will be tormenting for eternity is my issue. I just can't see a loving God doing that or finding pleasure in seeing his most beloved creation suffering for ever. So, this is what I think is going to happen. 1) hell is not a place, is just the eternal separation from the presence of God. And 2) on his second coming, God will wipe out all evil from this earth. So, that means that all the people that chose "to go to hell", will die forever, therefore, superarted from the presence of God. There will be no evil at all, nothing, nada.

He does not find pleasure in people choosing other than Him. Also,The two choices of external destination are forever because souls were created to live forever. Your first contention actually supports why hell is real - people who burns children alive needs to go to hell. Isaiah 45:23 - the keyword is "will" - in the future, that WILL happen - perhaps when The Kingdom of God is finally here. In context of Romans 14:11 it is during judgement day. Before that, plenty of folks cursed and rejected God. Furthermore, the context of Isaiah 45 is when God declares to all nations, after their idols failed them, that God Himself is the only truth and way to salvation. Romans 14:11 - not a stand alone passage, its context can be derived from Romans 14:10 and Romans14:12, which speaks of a time when all is judged before God. Pretty much the same can be said about Phillipians 2:10, it is a promise the the whole world WILL know who the True God is. Phillipians 3:21 - yet another contention that is totally out of context. The entire chapter is about a promise of what is ahead for believers when we perervere, that God is in control, and will fulfill His promise. How does this equate 1:1 that hell is real or not? EDIT: but I will play. Everything is under Christ's subjucation and that includes hell. If He wants to let it go on forever more, that will be done. If He wants it gone, it will be gone. PRAISE JESUS! The point is: Please apply those verses mentioned by the O.P. within context, folks. But O.P. brought a valid point that one of those passages may also convey that annihilation is possible. BTW - although I believe hell is real, it is ultimately up to God who will end up there. As I mentioned, it seems annihilation is also on the table. The point is, God wants everybody to be reconciled to Him by accepting Christ and repent. Knowing our propensity to rebel, ignore, and reject Him, God uses a very stern warning for the eternal consequence of rejecting Him.

Make a being that requires evidence in order to adopt a belief. Know exactly how much evidence he needs in order to believe. Don't provide him the sufficient evidence that would cause him to believe. Hell is just the absence of God

Hey, i am a christian that's being said, the traditional view of hell is quiet problematic for me. I believe that both heaven and hell exist as states of mind, and the idea that they exist as places in the afterlife is quiet irrelevent. I don't want to enter in details so in short i believe that people commit major sins mainly out ignorence and being more enlighted will help them stop. Yea i agree that we aren't good and we aren't saints but i also believe that we're drivven by a strong desire of wanting to be good. I admit that maybe i hold those views because i am still not knowledgeble enough, and i hope i can arrive to the truth one day. I may not agree with what was presented but the video was very well done, and i love your work Sean, so keep it going ❤.

The bible doesn't focus on the after life, and for me it's a way to tell us to live in the present and focus on it (it's the only time you can live after all) and in my point of view if your behaviours are powered by fear of hell rather then love there is a big issue.

In a similar way to how people on earth are dead and alive at the same time? Eph. 2.1; 4.18; John 5.24; 1 Tim.5.6; 1 John 5.12, etc. Death is often presented as being separated from the sphere of God's blessing (Gen.2.17; Deut.30.15-20; Jer.31.15-17, etc.).

Not to an eternal hell. Hell is destruction. The wicked will perish and disappear after judgment.

If sending people to hell did not mean eternal torment or in other words torture, the bible doesn’t say you evil if you’re not perfect being good has nothing to do with being saved. God does send people to hell because author of all things so if it’s penultimately your choice then god has no power over you once you’re created. You even admit being saved has nothing to do with being good but believing. Eternal torment is unbecoming of a omnbenevolent god and if you can’t be good without god why are atheists not murdering and stealing? We must ask: what is the true nature of "hell"? I would like to suggest for discussion that "hell" is a remedial space created from His great love for us in order to work through the errors in our soul that we created by disconnecting from His Love. Quit quoting CS Lewis Sean. Everyone's read the book and it ends with the belief that people can get out of Hell after death. That isn't what you believe so just be honest.

Dr. McDowell, I liked your video, it's a really good explanation of humans being evil and humans choosing to go to Hell. God not sending people to Hell. My question is why does God allow people that choice? God is love (1 John 4:8 and 4:16). So we know God loves us. God had his own son killed, that's how much he loves us (John 3:16). So he gave us this option to go to heaven because he loves us. If he loves us so much why does he allow anyone to choose the other option and go to Hell. If I had a friend who I loved so much that I had to kill my own son to give him an option to not go to Hell, I would do absolutely everything in my power to make him choose to go to Heaven. So let's say there's this guy who has heard about Jesus and doesn't believe in him, to the point where he persecutes tons of Christians because they're causing so much trouble. Now this guy is on his way to another city to try to stomp out Christianity there too. Nothing anyone says will convert him. So on the road to this other city he gets struck blind and Jesus starts talking to him... Well we all know the rest of Paul's story. But the point is God could do that for anyone, and I believe he does it for a lot of people who don't believe. But some people don't believe and God let's them stay that way. So either God picks favorites and loves some people more than others and some he wants to not believe, or he's not powerful enough or knowledgeable enough to know and be able to do just the right things in everybody's life to make them choose to believe in Jesus. Hopefully this was a good explanation of my questions. At the moment I'm trying hard to still believe in the Bible but there are so many doubts I have and I'm hoping you might be able to answer this question or at least point me to someone who can so that I can at least have 1 fewer doubts about Christianity.

I actually don't agree with the idea that God doesn't send people to Hell, I think that can get turned on it's head by reading scripture. I think the better way to put it, is that people put themselves in the position to be sent to hell. A righteous judge still has to either set a person free or actively send them to prison. Same with God. God did not force the people into the position, like the judge didn't, but God must be just and righteous in his actions. So, God DOES send people to hell, but it is we who choose which lane we want to walk in.

The person pose this question to me ,and I told him I thought you believed in social justice they said it was too harsh eternity .I said the Bible is clear hell was intended for rebellious angels the Havic they created to the entire earth ,and its people doesn’t seem quite so unbalanced when you think of it this way .and after making sure 6 million Jews and millions of other people would die during World War II Hitler would have to be there for a very very long time. and if he has decided to make his life all about serving One of these entities then he needs to be with that entity an eternity!

Yes, and the word " hate" trips people up because we think of it in human feelings and emotions. When reading passages I context, it is showing he dislikes man's iniquity and rejection of the right path.

I haven't watched the video yet, trouble sleeping but i think that people themselves sends themselves to hell.

So did all the people who lived in the Americas for 1500 years before the Europeans explored and bringing the message of Christianity go to hell? Plus it's crazy we even use the word Hell. That word never came out of Jesus's mouth.

I have a few objections to some of the philosophical statements here (for instance, I consider human nature to be _mixed_ rather than inherently good or evil, and question whether making "original sin" a _heritable_ part of that nature is loving or just). But here's my main question for you: *If Hell is a choice people make rather than something God inflicts on us, then why would that choice be irreversible after death?* I mean, if you're an annihilationist, then fine. The person doesn't exist anymore, so obviously they can't change their mind. Though I _would_ question the morality of God allowing people to choose oblivion without first ensuring that they have _complete and lucid understanding_ of what they're choosing, what they're giving up, and how to make that choice. But it doesn't sound like you're an annihilationist. So... why is death the cut-off point for the decision? If we're conscious and capable of thought after death, would we not be capable of changing our mind (as lamented in many a Chick Tract)? If we _can't_ change our mind after death, then "respecting our free will" is no longer relevant since we apparently no longer have any. In this case, would it not be more merciful to simply annihilate us? *On the other hand, if we **_can_** change our mind while in Hell, wouldn't a loving God welcome us if we decided to choose Him instead?* I know that some will argue that God's _justice_ would not allow this. But in my opinion, God would not hold _punitive_ standards of justice. I view punishment-focused justice as just one step up from _revenge._ It makes the aggrieved feel a bit better while reducing the long-term feud cycles of unchecked revenge, and it _does_ provide some deterrent against future crimes. Definitely an important stage in the development of human ideas of justice... but still _deeply flawed_ and _deeply human._ Why would God use such a system? Wouldn't His view of justice be about _redemption_ and _reconciliation,_ not punishment? _Reformative_ justice rather than punitive? And how can _eternal_ punishment be useful for that? So... if we're conscious in Hell and capable of thought and retain our free will to choose Hell or not and God desires for us to be redeemed and leave Hell... *how can it not be so?* If God willed that we leave and we willed that we leave, what could possibly prevent it? Perhaps one might argue that all those in Hell _will_ freely choose to remain there forever. But is this not merely an _exact inverse_ of the world in which everyone freely chooses to do only good, a possibility typically discarded as implausible by the free will defense for the problem of Evil? It's interesting that you quote _The Great Divorce,_ because C.S. Lewis discusses these same ideas in it. He depicts people from Hell visiting Heaven. Some choose to go back, but _some choose to stay._ In fact, his guide within the narrative is _George MacDonald,_ a well known *Christian universalist* whose writings influenced both Lewis _and_ G. K. Chesterton. His *universal reconciliation* (which Lewis doesn't fully endorse but also _doesn't_ fully deny) is not some quick and easy "Oh God just forgives everyone!" All _have_ sinned. Humans _are_ flawed and imperfect. And correcting those flaws and imperfections can be _painful._ Antiseptic stings, but it cleanses the wound. The forge burns, but it refines the metal. Recognizing that "I've fucked up" hurts, but it helps you do better. And in the end _all_ things are made right, and _all_ things are reconciled. I don't know for certain if there even is an all-transcendent, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving God. If there is, I certainly find myself questioning why He's so non-apparent in the world, why so many evils are allowed to go unchecked, why so many people have been allowed to do horrible things in His name. But if there _is_ such a God (and I _hope_ there is, might even _believe_ there is), I am convinced that, in the grand scheme of eternity, *Hell will be empty and all will be well.*

There is a believe not popularly known which said that hell isn't real, instead purgatory exist, where damned soul can atone for their sin. It's process of atoning sin is so hard it might be impossible without some miracle and strong will. What i want to say is, a believe is something you want to believe. And tbh i do hope we do have choices in the afterlife if all of this is real, because i am an atheist.

Sorry people: the world is filled with GOOD PEOPLE. The claim from the Bible that there is nobody who is good is simply not true. Even if there is a punishment for evil and bad, torture forever is terrible. No. If somebody did unspeakable evil, public firing squad is fine. Forever torture? I could not do that to them even if they had killed my family. Hell makes absolutely NO sense.

Enoch and Elijah both went straight to heaven, how could God allow people who have sinned even once in His presence? It’s not lining up, also just because people are evil and some are drastically evil that doesn’t mean they should be placed in an eternally alive fire that scorches everything it comes in contact with that’s torture even for drastically evil people, Hitler wasn’t some supernatural demon dude who can levitate objects with his mind, know the thoughts of every human and has super durability Hitler was still human that’s just as perceptible to pain as any human being, just put Hitler in timeout for a few years and he would probably be good as any normal human being if he gets proper education.

Hell also makes no sense to me. A true loving God who created a world of free will is definitely aware people can turn evil but will forgive them anyway. I think this world was created the way it was to truly understand what love is. Reincarnation however will make a lot of sense. Maybe bad people or evil people get reincarnated till they truly know what love is before they join God in a loving and peaceful environment. Hell is probably just a scam created by religions. Hell and a loving God together makes no sense and doesnt work. Its more of a God of fear and control.

As I may have shared, I have always had the attitude of submitting myself to God no matter what. Four months ago I was going through a tough philosophical period hence my comments above. I finally realized my smallness and God's greatness and, once I once again submitted to God, I realized I have no place telling God what to do and how to run His kingdom. If He says Hell is a reality, then it is. Granted it is hard to accept and believe, but given the FACT there is a God, and given the FACT He has revealed Himself to us through many prophets over the millennia and finally through the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), I must humbly accept what He says and that's it. Otherwise it's chaos and no certainty about anything. Without God we are just fancy cockroaches running to hide when we see the light. In the end, true faith, belief, and bowing down before Almighty God is the only way to go. Hell real? Then do what it takes not to end up there. Hitler in hell forever? No problem, by the way.

I agree with the premises of sinful human nature, and of us choosing our eternal destiny. Also in God not taking pleasure in the DEATH of thr wicked. Could there be another biblically supported alternative that includes, punishment and hell, but does not make God look evil and unjust in punishing wicked sinners for eternity for something they did in less than a thousand years (over killed). Also is God's plan of salvation to perpetuate sin in a place called hell or to do away with all manners of sin and its consequences, to include death? @@soldierjag I'm in favor of Scriptural accuracy which illustrates that God is LOVE. He is both infinitely JUST and infinitely MERCIFUL without contradiction. He punishes for the end result of "correction" & "reproof", not to be punitive as mainline churchianity does here. Eternal Conscious Torment (ECT) is an ancient pagan concept from Greek mythology that crept unto the translation process. "Christian Universalism" is what the first 500 years of Believers in Christ believed. For the past 1500 years ECT was used as a fear-tactic to control the masses (who at that time were illiterate for the most part). Thank you so much Jonathan for asking. I'm disappointed. I do not choose to go to hell. But Christianity says I will if I don't believe. Unfortunately I CAN'T believe in Jesus because it doesn't make sense to me. All I could do is SAY I believe, but God sees right through that because he knows my heart. What am I supposed to do?

@@gregorywilliams5105 a friend led me to Jesus, he told me to pray to him as I was going to sleep, I felt his presence surround me and we went on a trip in the spirit world, he confirmed what he taught in the bible, I had extreme anxiety at the time and he said 'do not worry, it won't add a day to your life' so I make an effort to not worry about things, after I woke up in the middle of the night I felt his energy, He's Powerful, Loving and Wise, when he's with you he makes you feel like you are the best thing God ever created

@@stephenkaake7016 That's great to hear. I did have what I believe was a very powerful spiritual experience about 25 years ago. It changed me. I felt God's presence, and it seemed like He was guiding me for several months afterwards. A lot of things happened that I couldn't explain, both internally and events seemed to fall into place. I do remember being somewhat surprised that there was nothing about Jesus during my experience. I talked to several Christian pastors about it, and they weren't very helpful. Despite my genuine efforts, Jesus or the truth of the bible hasn't been part of my experience.

@@gregorywilliams5105 just curious what spiritual things have you been interested in, all truth has a level to to it, have you ever read dr david r hawkins book, power vs force? its a entry book to enlightenment, my favorite book is 'truth vs falsehood'

The problem is not that people might have to endure a period of suffering to deal with the pain they caused others but that this suffering is eternal. It's the eternality of this suffering that would make god a moral monster. David Bentley Hart is very good on this.

Sean, I love your talks. But on this point, we disagree. No amount of explanation can make 100,000,000,000,000 years (and of course that is just the start) of punishment, torment and/or suffering line up with a perfect God of love and justice. Reasonable consequences for wrongs done in a two-digit year life span are needed, but eventually the need for justice turns into nothing more than vindictive, sadistic cruelty. The worst case of true evil, ever. God does not NEED evil beings to exist to be God, in the end they should be put out of existence, put out of their misery, ultimately fulfilling the eternal punishment promised to those who refuse his grace. He promised eternal life to those who believe in him, I do not think it says eternal life for those who do not believe. Love you brother. In life’s walk for wisdom, always remember to eat the meat and spit out the bones.👊👍

So humans 'choose' nonending torture,does sean really believe this? not believing something (in this case a book) has no connection with wanting to be tortured for eternity (or even for a short time),how can anybody connect them? (seemingly only in the 'logic' of the religious. )

I don't know where you're getting your theology from, but its incorrect, 'the law is written on our hearts' we don't need the book to know whats right and wrong, people can choose to do what's right, 'be honest' or chose to do whats wrong 'tell lies' as an example, when we leave this world we go to a place that fits our behavior, good people go to paradise, bad people go to a place of sin corresponding to how they lived, its totally fair

What you mean is: God doesn't like people because Adam and Eve at the fruit of knowledge. Or, if you don't worship God, you're evil

People will NOT be Tormented for all Eternity in Hell by God...The Bible Teaches Annihilation of the Lost...See 2 Pet. 2:6...

So the story goes like this. God created heaven and hell, he created good and evil, he created the ability to do good and bad, he created everything, knows everything, and has planned everything. But when someone go to hell it’s their fault not gods. Sounds like we are the scapegoats for gods failure and excuse for us to be tortured forever. Being presented with the evidence that hell is real, no one would choose to go there. Also salvation is not free. It might seem free but it is very works based

Up until about 500 A.D., Christian beliefs about hell were reasonable and beautiful. The prevailing view then was that hell (the lake of fire, actually) not only punished but also purified the unrighteous. It was temporary -- each person's finite punishment would fit their finite crimes (sins). (The Greek speaking early church fathers knew that _aionios,_ the Greek word that is mistranslated as "eternal" in our English Bibles, doesn't really mean "eternal.") Once a person's punishment and purification were complete, he or she would go to heaven. Everyone would eventually make it into heaven and be blessed, with heavenly rewards varying by person, based on the lives they led. For supporting verses & quotes, see my two replies. God bless!

He doesn't "pick" them, they pick HIM. And yes, He is in control, but He's not in control of our free will. WE make the choice to love Him and obey Him. Or we make the choice to ignore Him, thus choosing hell. Simple.

@@nategraham6946 you'd be surprised, but quite a few! There are people out there I've had conversations with, that declare that they can't worship God because they consider Him a dictator, and they'd preffer to live life on their own terms even if it means eternal torment. I've even heard someone say that they enjoy torment very much, and they can't wait tobe tortured for all eternity. Lost, damaged souls beyond repair!

I believe theres a difference between willful sin where you just dont care and sin that your struggling with and truly want to overcome .
