How Busy Is The NC500 In July ? | Dunnet Bay CAMC | Driving The NC500 In A Campervan

#motohome #drone #driving #wildcamping
In this episode, filmed in July 2023 you catch up with us at Dunnet Bay Club Campsite on the NC500. We have. alovely stay and Charie our cocker spaniel dog, enjoys a play on the beach. We then head along the top of Scotland driving the beautiful NC500 route. The scenery is spectacular, we thought it would be very busy with vans and motorhomes, but it was surprisingly quiet. We make a stope off at the famous Annies Bakery at Canisbay to sample the wonderful pies and cakes. We take some the drone up and film some scenery that gives you an idea of the vastness of the landscape. We drive past what I thought was roadworks but it turns out to be the start of the building work for the new Space Port in Sutherland. We stop at Smoo Cave but neither of us were able to go down to the cave on this occasion. We are then on the hunt for the perfect wildcamp spot, if there is ever a perfect spot!

    I suspect that the collision sensors on the drone weren't happy landing on the blue thing. It could have mistaken it for water. I hand launch and catch my drone now as it's the safest way to avoid damaging it.

    Lovely to see Charlie having fun on the beach. Beautiful scenery on the drive to Tongue. It's beautiful around the Kyle of Tongue. I remember us buying Magnums from the shop there and they were rock hard 😂 Moody looking sky with Donald, but it adds to the beauty of the place in my opinion. We loved it at Ceannabeinne beach and so did Nanook. Its on our list to go back to do his ashes, but we didn't overnight as it was too wonky for me and we had no signal whatsoever. There's meant to be an aire around there somewhere near Sango Bay way I think. We overnighted by a church ruin and a golf course past Sango Sands. I agree completely about phone signal incase you end up in an emergency.

    We've been told that many times that the NC500 is too busy that we've avoided it. Maybe it was quiet for you because July is prime midge season. The first time that we took our dogs to France, Shep the border collie, decided to roll on/in a dead fish a Jugon Les Lacs. Even though I stripped down to my boxers and dragged him in the lake to wash him off he still stank to high heaven. When we got back to the Gîte we hosed him down and used fox poo shampoo but it doesn't work with dead fish. There was a massive lavender bush outside so I would get handfuls of that and rub it in. We had to block the stairs at night to stop him trying to get on our bed and even a week later he was still stinking all the way back from Normandy to the Midlands (I also had raging toothache for the 16 hour journey). He's stopped rolling in stuff and and prefers to eat it so we invested £10 in a box muzzle after a 4 figure vets bill after eating toad stools.

    We hadn’t planned to do the NC500, it was a last minute decision 😊 So We were worried that it would be rammed, but it was quiet as you saw, still vans on it, but nothing like what we expected 😅 The midgies are May-September sometimes a little earlier. They weren’t an issue until Kinlochewe though, they were bad there! You never fail to make us chuckle with your stories Tony 😂 It’s good to know, we’re not the only ones with a naughty dog 🐶🤣 Charlie was poorly after snacking on something off the floor in Windermere in the summer! Would have to be August bank holiday & a vet visit 😱 He’s a scavenger too, won’t eat his own dinner, but happily eat rubbish off the floor! We’ve often thought about a muzzle for this reason too. Soon be time for you to go on your adventures 😎 Have a good week 😁 Em 💜

    I was planning to do the NC500 this august but I've been warned and put off my people telling me about the midges in Scotland. People have suggested that because the NC500 route is obviously by the coast the midges might not be able to withstand the breeze. What was your experience with midges on the NC500?? Thank you!

  • @vansforthememories

    @vansforthememories

    Ай бұрын

    Hi 👋 We are used to the midgies as we used to live on Skye. But , here’s our experience in the Moho, there is less on the east side of the 500. How bad they are really is depending on weather conditions, if it’s still & humid it’s fairly bad for them. They’re more active early morning & evening & in vegetative areas or beside still waters such as lochs. They’re not as much of an issue on the coast or near the sea, as it tends to be breezy. They are mainly bothersome early morning & evening & after rain if it’s still. You can buy Smidge to put on your skin as a deterrent from them, also midge nets if they’re really problematic. If you’re walking, they tend to not be able to keep up with you, it’s when still that the little horrors will bite. There is some footage in this kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYiW0sOmqtfVfNY.htmlsi=V6eje6phkvl3uyoZ video of ours, of a bad day we had with them. This was the only really bad day we had on our month long tour of the highland in July. In that video there is also some tips on how to manage if they get in your motorhome. It certainly wouldn’t put me off going & I get allergic reactions to their bites & I am immune compromised. Be prepared, read the midge forecast before planning your activities that day & enjoy. If you’re still concerned, there’s usually less of them in September. I hope that helps, happy to answer any other questions you may have, or I have missed. Thanks, Em 💜

    Please & with respect, you cannot wild camp in Scotland in a MH/CV. Wild camping in Scotland has a legal definition & specifically excludes motorised activities. This common misconception has caused huge environmental damage in the Highlands & especially since the NC500 was launched by a private company without any consultation with local communities. Please, please don't call parking at the roadside "wild camping" as it is not & if off road, it may be private property & potentially illegal. Safe travels.

  • @vansforthememories

    Hi June, thank you for the comment 😊 I do understand where you are coming from on this 😄 But please be assured, we generally tend to mostly use sites & Aires 😊 You’ll see that from our videos 😊With only the odd night here n there off-grid, when we do “wild/free camp” we always do this with the upmost respect for the local community.😊 We don’t park where there are any “no overnight parking” even if the signs are unofficial, near any houses or gates/access to fields/farms etc. We take all of our rubbish away & we only ever dispose of waste water & our cassette waste on campsite facilities & Aires. We always spend money in the local community too, helping to support local small businesses. Of course, we can only speak for ourselves & we also get annoyed at some of the irresponsible people, who do not respect the area. 😢 Having witnessed the litter in some areas, left by various groups be it, campers, cars, tents & lorries 😡 I can understand your concerns & frustration at the lack of respect shown by some. It’s really upsetting to see. I hope that gives you some reassurance of our own personal situation with regard to the issue & we thank you for your feedback. Best wishes, Em 💜

    @@vansforthememories I appreciate all you say, all I ask is that you refrain from the "wild camping" terminology as this is misleading. It may only be you for the odd night but it is "only the odd night" for hundreds & hundreds of other people so the same places are occupied 365 days of the year & this upsets residents, including myself. I wish you well, I gather from your videos that your were a resident of Skye for some time, Skye is really suffering. It's sad but it is the way it is nowadays. Take care & safe travels.

    @@junehall2177 Totally understand & we certainly don’t want to add to any of the issues. We are running a few months behind in our editing, so you may still here the odd slip, but going forward out of respect & because you’ve explained it so well, we will of course change the terminology 😊 Yes, many years ago now, but Skye always has a piece of my heart ❤️ and we return frequently & yes we see the issues & it is indeed sad to see 😢 Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it & I hope things improve as time goes on.
