How Brian Eno got U2 unstuck: The kitchen vs. the restaurant

If you're struggling with making great work, Brian Eno has the answer.
One pitfall of creative work is thinking that the process should be orderly and clean. Legendary rock band U2 fell into this trap after the success of the Joshua Tree. Superproducer Brian Eno got them back on a track with a reminder of an important truth.

In today's music business Eno and Lanois would have had well deserved co-writing credits on U2's albims

It's a great analogy, but that kitchen is not chaos! It's busy AF, but would fall apart immediately if everyone really was disorganised.

I think that's why he said 'if you leave a plate here for more than 30 seconds, it cannot be served.' What may appear as chaos to the unfamiliar eye is, in a working kitchen, perhaps better described as chaotic. Not the same thing.

He definitely play a part. No doubt about that. But you’re wildly overstating it. To me both Daniel Lenois and Steve Lillywhite were bigger factors than him. In fact I would argue Eno is the largest reason they fell off a cliff artistically the past 20 years. His obsession with electronics and ripping rock themes out of their work has devastated their artistic output.

@@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 Massively disagree. Without Eno, they've become a generic rock outfit without any sonic ambition. Eno tapped into the ethereal nature of U2 and helped bring out their lush and textured soundscapes. The Edge without Eno hasn't written a decent backing track in years.

so it was showing old clips of U2 while referring to the 'old' way of working, when everything came easy to them...as there is no studio footage of The Joshua Tree readily available, i'm guessing he used Unforgettable Fire footage, as it was the closest album in proximity (as well as being an older album that Eno was also involved with)...
