Nashville’s premiere performances of Gary Hustwit’s new generative documentary will be created live in real time by the filmmaker. These versions will never be seen again.
Visionary musician and artist Brian Eno - known for producing David Bowie, U2, Talking Heads, among many others; pioneering the genre of ambient music; and releasing more than 40 solo and collaboration albums - reveals his creative processes in the groundbreaking generative documentary ENO, a film that’s different every time it’s shown. Acclaimed filmmaker Gary Hustwit (HELVETICA, RAMS) set out to decode Eno’s creative strategies and examine his lifelong search for the meaning of music in the first career-spanning documentary of the legendary and prolific artist. Instead of a by-the-numbers bio-doc, Hustwit and his collaborators invented an approach befitting the iconoclast’s use of new technologies.
ENO is the world’s first generative cinematic documentary and, like a musical performance that’s different every night, ENO creates a unique viewing experience for each audience. Utilizing a proprietary software system developed by Hustwit and digital artist Brendan Dawes, the film has millions of possible variations of scenes and footage drawn from Hustwit’s original interviews and Eno’s rich archive of hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage and unreleased music. The result is a film that resonates with Eno’s own artistic practice, his methods of using technology to compose music, and his endless deep dive into the mercurial essence of creativity.

It's hard to fathom that for as much as he is celebrated, he is still an absolutely underrated genius. Can't wait to see this.
My favorite thing was his exhibit of TV screens welded together, changing light in time with ambient music.
Finally a movie where the trailer can't ruin the plot.

Saw it debut in Nashville last Friday...extremely cool if you're an Eno fan and perhaps even if you're not ! Saw both showings just to be sure they weren't yanking our collective chain about the generative part of the show and simply playing it backwards. 🤣 Had a great time, met the director/producer Gary Hustwit and he's just wonderful...go see it...multiple times, for the first time ! 😁
One of my heroes.
Got to see this last night at the Vidiots Theatre, 27th in LA. As a long time Eno fan it totally blew my mind. The content and the creation was off the charts. Still processing the overall experience. Great crowd and theater. You will be inspired and motivated. I saw 90 minutes and was glued to every frame, so entertaining and refreshing, I wanted more.
Long overdue. Eno is in league of hois own.

It's weird how conservative his mix of Devo's first album is. Devo's demos of songs like Be Stiff are better than the official album.
Not sure whether I understand this trailer. Does this mean it will only be shown in theatres, and that each show will be a unique generation?

Yes, because the software chooses which parts to play each showing, each time it is different. Which is why it can't be shown on Netflix or similar until they set up a system that can handle streaming a different version to every person simultaneously. I saw it a few weeks ago in Sheffield and am now miffed that the version played didn't include several of the parts I would have liked to see. Which is a perfect example of why I like Eno so much - his works make me think differently about the world.

I love everything about this man except for his work with Coldplay. I'm sure it's a lot of money which I can't fault him for, but imagine the art we could have a hand in if that fraction of time wasn't spent with Coldplay...

About decades ago I must have written: I love everything about this man except for his work with U2. I'm sure it’s a lot of money… I am pretty sure in both cases it was about money. He isn’t a billionaire- why not stealing some money from boring mediocre idiots? ❤❤
