How BMW won Le Mans, and why they never went back

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

BMW’s motorsport division, know rather un-imaginatively as BMW Motorsport, has never been a stranger to Le Mans. But there’s no participation prizes at Le Mans, so how did BMW write themselves into the history books?
BMW cars have been seen racing sporadically in Sarthe since 1939, and many claimed class wins. But these were always modified road cars, the equivalent of today’s GTE (in which BMW raced in 2018 and 2019), and so overall victory appeared allusive for the German marque. By the late 90s however, enough was enough, this is the story of the BMW V12 LMR.

Was blessed to be able to photograph the great battle between the LMR and the Panoz LMP-1 at the 1999 Portland ALMS race for a magazine that doesn't exist anymore. Having the two rounding the final turn 12 nose-to-tail, lap after lap, rear-engined German V12 versus the front-engined American V8 monster was glorious, and the crowd just loved it. Maybe my favorite sports car race of all time, simply because these two TOTALLY different cars just took it to each other all day long, with the Panoz taking victory in the end.

I was there and totally concur. Terrific race and even better noise from those cars; completely different sounds but each so compelling though I admit to preferring the LMR, especially as it drones on down a straight. I watched and did an audio recording from the stands right at the exit of turn 12 for what I remember was a practice session.

Saw the M8 s in GTE pro at the Sarthe, absolute tanks that sounded awful. When the FIA hijacked the BPR series it immediately became a performance war once Porsche introduced the 1996 GT 1, the later Mercs were fast but airborne, the Toyota's fast but consumed gearboxes at an alarming rate, the Audi and wily old Reinhold Joest analysed the race, then suprise surprise came to the conclusion that it's best to have very little time in the pits. The resulting A8 was a masterpiece of engineering and quick change components. I've only missed attending 6 Le man's since 1984, so I'm really looking forward to the battles in Lmdh and Hypercar next year

@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Yha Charlie was good, didn’t meet Paul but obviously a very talented man, but think it was the overall difference in management between Williams and BMW didn’t gel, we had a very good 98 car and they wanted it changed as it didn’t fit the bmw look….we never got back to the performance of the first car and failed badly in 98, we was doing 100+ hour weeks for month, Williams told them in 99 give us the motor and leave rest to us, the motor was the I was told the weakest part of the package, I remember kristenson saying the Toyota wound pull a car length every gear change, but we could run another lap with the fuel. Bmw stuffed everyone before the 99 race, we was told we had no job on the shake down before the race, so everyone worked so very very very hard, had big issues with amount if hours and pressure, health etc and they pull out before the race, so that was nice of them. We thought it was a 1 car team, as the lead car was very strong, but the “second” car did the business and put in a great effort, was a good way to put 2 fingers upto bmw apparently they said they didn’t think we could win…🫣

Very likely.. Motorsport is all about money and knowing who to hire, BMW has alot more money than Audi. Even if Audi is in the VW group, they won't be handed the amount of money that BMW potentially can spend. There are some rather important points missing... Firstly, if my memory serves me right; BMW and Williams worked out correctly, that they could only defeat Toyota by better fuel management - gaining an extra lap or two per stint. Let's not forget that the Toyota was fundamentally the better car. Secondly, the rules at LM frequently change and last years winning combination is not always the right solution for the following years. A clunky road derived BMW V12 6 litre engine with an uncompetitive inlet size was déjà vu. To continue BMW would have had to make a major engine investment.

You sound like a bitter Toyota fan. It’s an endurance race at the end of the day and often times as the saying goes “To finish first, first you must finish” It is fundamentally in this manner that so many ‘slower or underpowered’ Porsches won class victories at Le Mans vs the much higher powered Ferrari’s etc. Toyota has only ever won to this day at Le Mans during periods where no other major automakers have been present. Indeed, Porsche left after the end of the 919 Hybrid domination and only then was Toyota able to win the outright victory… though very hollow in mine and others opinions….

Explain? the early years were pretty consistent.... 2002 was pretty competitive, le mans win, touring car success, first two nurburing wins. European wrc champion, handicapped in the US trans am series. 3.0 CSL dominated touring car, successful in group 5 GT endurance, 6 series successful. E30 M3 dominated the world, E36 was successful, McLaren F1 was successful. The only time things got weird or wonky, would be the development of the M1 and the IMSA March M12 powered prototypes.

Is it safe to say that BMW's win in that year a case of mere luck? If Toyota didn't have a tire blowout, they would've won. But, a win is a win, and credit where it's due.

I don't think its fair to put it all down to luck. A 24hr endurance race is not the kind of thing that happens by accident - there was luck involved, but BMW created a solid foundation on which to capitalise on the luck they got imo

They won cause they had luck. Other teams abandoned. Otherwise, by sheer performance, they wouldn't have any chance. Period. In F1, they didn't manage to win any championship. They won't comeback, because BMW can't win and they know that. So they think it is useless to spend money as long as the won't win. P.S. I didn't even watch the video. It is just my point of view, as a Decades LeMans fan. I saw the race live.

To be fair BMW has mostly focused their motorsport efforts in touring car and as of now they are the most successful... E30 m3 most successful racecar besides the 935/935k3......... The 3.0 CSL, 2002, 6 series, E36, are all examples of their focus in touring car. Second BMW has always been a engine supplier.... From 80s Brabham, March prototypess, McLaren F1 they've never developed a chassis inhouse for Formula 1 and sports endurance.....

To finish 1st, first you must finish. Toyota at that time was one of many that could win 12 or 18 hours but not 24. To be fair many Factories have subcontracted to race teams or chassis builders. Sauber Mercedes, Dallara Ferrari 333SP, TWR Jaguar.

So basically they raced a williams, who exploited a loophole, and even so only won because toyota had a tyre failure. Meh
