Are we supposed to believe that black women are given different terms than everyone else for the debt they elect to take on?? Pretty sure struggling with debt is the same for anyone, regardless of skin color or sex.

No but life circumstances that are out of their control (ie poverty, lack of generational wealth or no higher education in the family) does matter. Data shows this to be true. If you want to get out of poverty and ahead in life and posses the intelligence to do it higher education is a proven way to get a white collar job or promote. That's why there is a student loan crisis because people are doing what they think will secure them a higher paying job and thereby the potential for a better quality of life.

No that's not that case. Black women willingly put themselves in this predicament most of the time. Ask any man in college what he studies. He will say "Accounting, Business Management, etc, etc". But, ask a black woman what she studies and the usual response is "Business Management while double majoring in finance" or "HR Administration and Psychology ". Its as if they cannot make up their mind on just one subject and stick with it. They have to have a backup! Replace "one subject" with "one guy" in the previous sentence and suddenly their is a parallel regarding how they approach relationships! Ooops might have said too much there.

If you graduated college without once reading a whole book, I do not feel sorry for you. Those jobs require more physical strength. A woman might be able to do that while she is young but it would be difficult once she's in her thirties. Besides that it would be difficult to be a plumber or electrician while a woman is pregnant or nursing. A woman with small children can't be away from home for long stretches of time. On top of all that male dominated environments are hostile to women and she would be opening herself up to harassment and discrimination. No thanks.

    1. Women outnumber men in college 3:2, so of course they'd have more of the share of debt. 2. The majors women take, on average, result in less lucrative career paths than the majors men take, so they hold on to their debt longer. 3. Black people on average are poorer, so they'd have to borrow more. (This is ultimately a class issue rather than a race issue, but the corporate media would never dare bring up class when they can unnecessarily drive a wedge between the races instead.)

Wow EGO is her theory?? As a black woman and first to go to college I chose a private top University because I was given a full scholarship however it did not include room & board. I had a work study job during the school year & full-time in the summer but in order to focus on my education loans had to be taken. While I'm grateful for the pell grant I received no matter what school you go to it doesn't cover much of anything. Having my BS Degree allowed me to get a corporate job but being a woman and black I quickly realized the uphill battle I faced to promote etc. It took over 15yrs to reach 75K. It's not about a handout but the reality of bias in the workplace and the world for that matter. I don't regret it one bit taking the loan but to be honest I'm hoping my daughter doesn't have to carry that burden too. We're providing every educational tool we can to our children but it's tough to set aside for future tuition. These colleges are getting increasingly expensive. The economy and country is better off when opportunities are provided for higher education. It's not just a hand out especially when there's no generational wealth to rely on as many "legacy" or "donor" students who are predominantly white can benefit from.

This is something men must factor into their decision in marrying a black woman with massive student loan debt, especially when you as the man has little or no student loan debt. That’s an instant and large major liability that can be an albatross on a married couple. It creates a huge obstacle qualifying for a mortgage loan because the student loan payments dramatically spikes the DTI ratios not including credit card, auto loans and other debts she likely has. It’s some that MUST be addressed along with debt loads overall because a key contributor to divorce is financial struggles that create tension in a marriage.

Also, we don’t understand that going out of state for college and attending private colleges will lead to a life of debt. First generation college students need guidance through the college selection process. Also, shouldn’t parents plan for their kids to attend college.

It depends on your career aspirations. A loan for $100K to become an engineer is a better "investment" than $100K to study art history or cultural programs. If you cannot afford an Ivy League school, then go to one of the hundreds of other high quality schools. Work towards providing the Ivy League education for your children or grand children.

No more going to the malls, vacations, expensive restaurants, food trucks, clubs and bars popping bottles with that money you now have to pay your student debt with. It’s time to live in the real adult world where you have to struggle like we did. Then decide which bill is most important and what you were gonna eat that night. But if you’re a teacher, doctor or nurse, don’t worry your job is considered more of value than others so your loan will be forgiven and wiped away.

I'm probably biased, and my sample size may be small... but amongst women suffocating with their finances involving student loan (regardless of race).. many of them seem to have a baby involved in their life too soon. Some of them even get pregnant while in College!!! Choosing to take out a student loan to get a stupid degree is Dumb. But choosing to have a risky unprotected sex during/right after College is OMG dumber. Your choice, your struggle. If you pop babies when your finance is in a complete mess, you almost guarantee a generational poverty. This is so sad, but true.

Black women aren't as likely to come from a family that can support their education. Black women also face discrimination in the workforce so it's harder to find a job that pays well enough to pay back the loans. Black women are also less likely to marry.

@@sheh.9163 Not all education is good education that empowers and results in independence. I know plenty of college educated people that are dependent and struggling. A person going into massive unsubstantial debt is an intelligent person which includes those with PhD’s. I have clients with PhD’s that will never pay off their debt. As long as you are dependent on someone to employ you doesn’t empower you and it makes you dependent. You may have a slight financial advantage over others without a college degree but even then that depends on your debt load because it’s not about your GROSS income, it’s about your NET income which includes after paying taxes and paying your monthly debt obligations and what’s left to spend and/or save. In fact, I have IT Professionals clients with certifications that much more than those with 4+ year degrees. 🤷🏾‍♂️
