How Black Artists find the platforms - Resilience, Drawing, Next Generation with Akiwali Walters

Akiwali Walter, a multifaceted talent, was born in a small village near Mile Gully, Jamaica, in 1957. Leaving school at 14, he navigated the streets of Kingston before finding his calling in art. Inspired by artists like Robert Bryan and street scene painters, Walter discovered his innate gift and resolved to use it to unite talented individuals.
Since 1974, Walter has honed his skills as a painter and frame maker, mastering various styles and techniques. Notably, he developed the Molding Past Techniques, infusing his work with three-dimensional depth and tactile sensation. Alongside fellow artists, Walter co-founded the Trafalgar Artists Cooperative, establishing a lasting legacy in Jamaican art.
Walter's artistic journey has taken him worldwide, promoting Black culture through his vibrant canvases and murals. He has collaborated with renowned musicians like Black Uhuru and Ziggy Marley, showcasing his art at reggae shows across Europe, Africa, and Canada. As a teacher, Walter shares his passion for painting and Black culture, leaving his mark on audiences across continents.
