How Big George Foreman Took Back His Title (20 Years After Ali) - Holyfield & Moorer Fight Breakdown

Mortal Weapons the Fight Comic: www.modernmartialartist.com/m...
Twenty years after his infamous loss to Ali, Foreman did the unthinkable. At 45 years of age, Foreman took his title back, shocking the world and leaving little doubt about Foreman’s place as one of the greatest fighters in history.
The magnitude of this accomplishment cannot be understated. Foreman had pulled off perhaps the greatest upset in boxing, defying convention and embarrassing a multitude of prominent sports writers. How Foreman pulled off this incredible feat, and the path he took to get there, are both equally astounding.
To understand how Foreman took back his title at 45 years old, we must first take a look at Foreman’s stint as a young boxer.

I retired from the Humble, Texas fire department. George Foreman lived in Humble. We would watch him running along the railroad tracks, shadow boxing. Once we transported his Aunt to the hospital. She was residing with Mr. Foreman and his family. Mr. Foreman asked to ride in the back with her. I remember looking at his hands. They were huge. One would make 4 of mine. He was a gentle talking, very polite man. I have a lot of respect for him. He never acted like a big shot or requested any special treatment. Just a genuine, nice person.

The reason older fighters decline is usually more because their speed and reaction time is declining, they can´t take a punch like they used to, maybe they aren´t as motivated or they can´t recover as fast so they don´t train as much as they used to so their skills decline, etc. For men power doesn´t go anywhere until like 60+ if you work out a lot and eat healthy

Even when Foreman was young, mean, and maybe not the smartest boxer, you still pulled for him. There was always something gentle deep inside him. And every time I’ve re-watched Ali’s humiliation of him in Zaire, my heart has gone out to him. But that terrible moment, plus a few more, led him to a new and better path as a boxer and a man. Watching this, I now have more respect for Foreman’s smarts and skills as a boxer, learning and changing his strategies many times over. But more than that, he found the peace and happiness he was looking for. He deserves it.

I remember watching Big George Foreman begin his comeback on ESPN Friday Night Fights, but I was too young to witness his early career. I knew who George was when he started his comeback, but never saw his classic fights as this was before the internet and YT... Anyway, Big George was busy and on TV often as he mounted his comeback. He devastated every journeyman he faced on his climb back up the ladder to contention. He would never sit between rounds, always stayed standing. Foreman rag dolled his opponents and even implored the refs to stop some of the beatings he was delivering. His opponents blows would bounce off his crab defense as he marched forward like a tank and clubbed them down. As a young fight fan and boxing enthusiast, I was enthralled with his story, style and power... but never thought he would make it all the way back to Championship level. People thought his age was an impossibility in boxing. They thought as he faced better competition, his comeback would stall and hit a wall.... Well the only wall that was hit, was his opponents hitting the wall of Big George's sledge hammer like fists. Foreman's jab was like being hit by a swinging telephone pole and his right could chop down Oak trees. His comeback was an awesome sight to behold. It was a true pleasure to watch his journey back to contention and winning the Title against Moorer... Teddy Atlas was crushed.

I'm glad to see that there are people who see Big George for who he is. In my opinion, the 45 year old George was a tremendous boxer. If he had had the knowledge of his old age when he was young he would've been the greatest boxer of all time. As it stands, he is just one of the greatest. After watching this, I realised two things: 1, that I am not half as knowledgable about boxing as I thought I was and 2, that the vast majority of people, at the time, and even until today did not see past his age and thought it was a fluke that he won. Great video, even greater boxer.

When you examine the span of Foreman's career, he may well be the best heavyweight boxer of all time. There may be boxers that were more capable in their prime, but being able to adapt to age and remain in the top tier until your late 40s really says something. He also may have been able to be relevant in boxing even after his final loss. Who knows how far he could have gone? After all, he lost by a controversial decision to a 26 year old boxer who was still in his prime. Excellent documentary, by the way.

George totally reinvented himself and changed for the better after the loss to Ali and the loss to Jimmy Young. It's no doubt that the universe worked in George's favor and granted him a shot at redemption 20 years apart from losing his Championship and regaining it by defeating Michael Moorer. Big George is truly an inspiration and the true definition of a man's man by defying age and the odds that we're stacked against him. I can't wait to see the new movie about him in April 2023. ❤️

@@spencerantoniomarlen-starr3069 Yes. If you watch the fight Foreman seems slow and struggling and was losing badly on points. It seemed like Foreman couldn't hurt the younger Moorer but if you watch carefully you'll see that Foreman's jabs and straight rights were getting through Moorer's defenses and landing. You hardly notice because Moorer seems completely unphased by the hits. Individually, none of them were knock out shots but cumulatively those jabs take their toll on a fighter. By the 7th round Moorer seems less steady in his feet, his footwork suffered, and be missed many potential openings. This isn't just fatigue, it's the the cumulative effect of taking 30-40 jabs to the chin. It's death by a thousand cuts. You get dazed and sloppy and more vulnerable. So Foreman was actually do much better in the fight then the points would suggest. It was part of Foreman's strategy, and he capitalized on it perfectly. Moorer was expecting the same light jabs he'd absorbed the whole fight, and he was totally unprepared when George dropped the hammer and landed a knockout cross and sent Moorer to the canvass.

@@Quinten3131 I agree completely, George Foreman had the second biggest hands in terms of circumference in the history of the heavyweight division in boxing. With hands that abnormally large, every punch is a power punch. However, I'll say in this comment what I believe I have already said in a reply to one other comment under this video before, I believe that an underappreciated aspect of why Moorer stayed in or near the pocket too long in many moments in many rounds is because Michael Moore was basically the George Foreman of the cruiserweight division before he moved up to heavyweight, he as a cruiserweight was arguably one of the greatest knockout artists of all time. Therefore, I suspect that in the back of his mind he thought he could knock out any of his opponents if he just got the right shot in clean not realizing that when you go from opponents cutting down from about 200 pounds to an opponent who is 6'5 and 270 lbs, you're KO percentage earlier in your career at cruiserweight goes out the window, it's like trying to knock out a grizzly bear.

@@ipaporod Mayweather. Dudes a nasty technician. Even tho he exploits the rules (just doing everything to score points or knock down someone when possible) dude was he a boxer. Maybe not a real fighter, but as a boxer. He's amazing.

I remember a quote from George when he was asked how it felt to be the most dangerous man in the world. He replied something to the effect that a 10 year old with a gun was more dangerous than him. Now that is some serious wisdom.

George and his life story will always be my favorite. You have no choice but to love this guy and what he did for the sport and sportsmanship as a whole.
