As an 8 year old kid I remember the excitement my friends and I had leading up to the night this show aired. Everyone was talking about how they couldn't wait to watch it. And then it came on, my family and I sitting in front of the TV eager to see how they would follow up the original Star Wars movie. I think we were about 15 minutes in before my dad announced "Let's see what else is on" and unceremoniously changed channels. My friends and I didn't really talk about the Holiday Special after that. It was a bit like someone we knew had died and we didn't want to tarnish their memory by saying something negative.

To be honest though the tree house is amazing I wouldn't mind living there. Inside that fantasy world where dreams can come true for me and you. So beautiful, especially the kitchen exhaust fan and beautiful wood paneling. Just makes you want to curl up in a ball with a blanket.

I think that the groans that the Wookiees make are groans of pain because George Lucas is forcing them to do this "Holiday Special" against their will by poking them with cattle prods and holding everyone they know and love hostage until filming is complete.

Ratio Tile He was still the one running the shock machine, and was personally standing there holding a sword to the off-screen Wookie baby’s throat. Simy to make them all perform as he wished, mostly he did it for fun, because he volunteered his personal time for this project. Lol.

Oh man, THIS IS Gold. I remember seeing this when I was a kid, and believe me I was 100% sold to Star Wars until this... I was left a 9 year old kid, an empty shell of my former innocent self, wondering how could adults do such things. Why would anybody ever do this? Next thing you know I was starting to wonder why was Star Wars actually good? Having lost all bearings my life crumbled and by the time I was 18 I was doing hard time in federal prison. It all started with the Star Wars holiday special. I still got it easy though, lots of me friends who watched it with me at the time eventually commited suicide. Once you see this, there is no turning back.

You definitely need some of the *Amazing* Neil Breen movies in your life. They are each, 1 1/2 hour long over-Indulgences into one Man’s messiah complex, and his need to still feel Super sexy into his early 50s. If you watch the entire collection: you will be able to pick his nutsack out of a line up of nutsacks, get an idea of what kind of young woman he has a fetish for; and finally know his complete outlook on what the ills of society are. Hint: it’s corrupt bankers, corrupt politicians, corrupt businessmen, and lastly corrupt religious figures. He also always figures out how to fit in a 4-8 minute long speech into his movies, about what’s wrong with the world, and how he knows exactly how to fix it perfectly. Usually as some sort of magically-powered God/alien/alien-god -Like being.

Like someone put a camera in a house of people that are furry. I do not know what was going on. Not at all. Some wannabe business type really thought this was a great idea. Wow, just shows how disconnected with society they really are.

According to Carrie... she kinda wasn't there actually... she was deep in drugs at this point, and allegedly had no memory of this at ALL... (or, perhaps the trauma caused her to suppress the memory? But she might have just been stoned out of her mind and simply not remember) I've always said, if you've seen the Holiday Special, nothing in the prequels, not even Jar Jar should have been a shock. Some of have known that Lucas was fully capable of shitting all over himself for decades....

Let me paint you a picture: it's 1978, and Star Wars has been out a little over a year and a half or so, but it's no longer in theaters. There's no VHS, no DVDs, no KZread, and no other Star Wars movies, TV shows, or anything else for you to fall back on and watch. This, this travesty, this atrocity of a TV abortion, this relentlessly awful steaming pile of atomic crap, this is the only new Star Wars available for you to watch. After you get done watching it, you can't go see any other Star Wars, because THERE ISN'T ANY OTHER STAR WARS!!! There is nothing to, for lack of a better term, "cleanse your palate." This is it. This is what you have to watch. This was all. When Star Wars was later re-released to theaters, that was our only opportunity to see the "real" Star Wars again. I watched this when I was 10 years old, and I have never forgotten it. I remember thinking, even at 10 years old, that Carrie Fisher was stoned while she was making it. It was...excruciating, and I LOVED EVERYTHING STAR WARS!!! It was the cinematic equivalent of finding out there's no Santa Claus. It didn't just change you, it changed us all.

You know.. I was 4 years old when I was taken to the cinema to see the first star wars movie... with my dad and grandpa. it was wild and although it was 40 years ago i can remember flashes of of memory being there... however... this Holiday special, was forever etched into my memory as trauma. Seriously I got into fights with highschool kids arguing over Chewbacca having a family and a wife.. and at the time I didn't know how I knew that... until I revisited this mortifying pallet of rotten vomit. I am 44 today and I am still mortified. Much love RJM

Thing is, I SAW the original broadcast of this. I'd seen Star Wars in theaters and literally everything in the world was all about Star Wars. It was basically a cash tsunami that just kept paying out. Every major franchise had a variety show and/or holiday special, so it only made sense in the 70s for Lucas to throw his hat into the ring and try both. Honestly, it should have paid off - most variety shows were completely terrible but they raked in a ton of cash and gave aging actors a shot at rebooting their careers ("Bea Arthur, Torch Singer") but all I remembered of this was that it was really weird and forced and didn't seem to be much about Star Wars at all. And it always pissed me off that we were expected to speak Wookie. Like what the fuck, Lucas? You couldn't even throw us a bone with some subtitles here? We have to listen to Chewbacca's family mooing and grunting for ten to fifteen minutes at a time and just GUESS what they're saying?

After about a half hour into it, I was the only one watching, and kept watching until the bitter end as a form of apology to my parents and self-punishment for rushing them while holding onto the hope that something cool was going to happen. I’m at least happy to say that though I remember that evening very well, I have very little recollection of what happened in the program. What’s the name of that cheerful music you play for background? I hear it all over the place.

I entirely forgot about this! I remember watching this on T.V.! OMG I was 9 years old in 1978. I remember seeing the little Wookie and telling my brother what happened to Chewbacca? Plus the Wookie kid looks weird as hell! I had to watch through this and show my son who is now 16 and a big Star War fan. He was yelling "NNOOOOO!!!" He refused to watch it because it was horrible. I had to laugh, because that was the time period that I grew up in, and it is nothing like what the kids have today! Does anyone notice when the Mother Wookie is cooking, her cooking pot looks like some old wash basin your Granny had for hand washing clothes or for taking baths in? I was like, why does the person on the T.V. cooking show have a nice pot, and Mrs. Chewbacca has to use Granny's old wash basin? She is one of the stars of the show! Her husband is a star!

Had Mark Hamill's constant protesting been listened to by Rian Johnson, I'm absolutely positive that it would have benefitted the film. 4:29 To be fair, Chewbacca never had subtitles in the original movie. However, _that_ was a very clever decision, making the audience have to infer what he was saying based on how other characters responded. Apparently, the people making this didn't think about how that would work when the audience doesn't understand any part of the conversation.

I'm old enough to have watched this when it came out... I was 10... I will say the following, for when you ask questions like "Why?" For the younger folks who weren't around or don't remember the 1970s... there was a law passed on January 1st, 1970 that stated "All TV shows and specials for the next 10 years are required to be in the 'Variety Show' format." If you're a child of the 90s, you just don't understand Variety shows of the 70s... they were required to have comedy sketches, musical interludes, an Art or Dance routine, some sort of "talent show" portion... you know... a variety of things... think Carol Burnett show, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, Sonny and Cher... yes... even the Muppet Show. They were all Variety Shows and that's what dominated 1970s Television... so when the Star Wars Holiday Special came out in the late 1970s... it too, fell under the "It must be a variety show format" special. If you watch it with that mindset, you understand the Star Wars Holiday Special.
