How automotive YouTubing helped tame my OCD

Matt Moreman from Obsessed Garage ( / mattmoreman ) found himself at a breaking point with a new diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. When his psychologist said he needed to open up more, he turned to publishing car content on the internet. First forums, then KZread, and now we have what love in Obsessed Garage.

Matt and I have very different takes on acceptable standards of car cleanliness but I love his stories and I am so glad that he has used this medium to help so many people who think and work the way he does. Thanks for sharing Matt and congratulations on the success of your channel.

A natural born "shrewd negotiator" and an engineer most definitely have different ideas about "acceptable" standards of car cleanliness. In your mind everything is for sale. Meaning that it is impossible for you to be obsessed with anything in your garage.
Matt’s transparency is the reason I watch every minute of his 3 hour videos. I hope we get more from him here!

This is by far my favorite VINwiki story thus far. Matt - you've touched many through your courage. Amazing stuff!

Big thank you to Matt, Ed and the team at VinWIKI for opening my eyes to a struggle I didnt know existed or even understand. Very eye opening. The fact that this channel is constantly suprising us is fantastic. Greetings and salutation from across the pond in Oz.
Such a genuine dude. Been watching his videos for two years now, he's great.
Hands down the best interview with Matt from obsessed garage I have ever watched. Nice to know that someone who had it all found out that you don't have anything without being able to share it with others and allow others to enjoy it with you. At the end of the day its the moments you share that make your life full.
Matt, I appreciate what you've done! This video is helping me realize I may need to let more people in much like you. I love your videos and watch them religiously!
Matt, thank you so much for sharing! What a powerful message!
Stories like this and the incredible content you deliver, is why this is the BEST channel on KZread. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for doing something different that we can all learn from Vinwiki and of course huge thank you to Matt. I'm sure this was incredibly difficult but you've given someone like me a different perspective. You seem to live a life that every car guy dreams about so it's hard to imagine that you wouldn't be happy. This is the reason why we should be as kind to each other as possible, especially in this awesome community that unites all kinds of different folks. Never seen your videos Matt, but I'll definitely check out your channel

Subbing to Matt.. his honesty is unbelievable and I respect it more than I can explain!
Love the vid. His honesty & knowing he's deeply flawed as he puts it is great (we're all deeply flawed, but the self realization is what makes life worth living) great vid, awesome guy, tremendous channel.
I've been watching Matts videos for years and this one really hit home, thanks for this.. even tho i dont have any friends, seeing someone else in the same shoes makes me feel somewhat normal again. i'd love to hang out with matt for a day or two. not for youtube publicity obviously but just to hang out with someone that's cut from the same cloth.
Thank you vinwiki for having Matt and thanks Matt for sharing your story. Always been interested in the way you think when I first saw u on adamLZ channel.
OCD, an imperfection which drives you to a perfection breaking point. Tough battle, glad to see he's using it to his advantage. Thanks for sharing your story :)
Actual humility. No fake BS. Willing to admit he is intelligent and knows his stuff... but also his flaws. Respect from a fellow OCD individual.
I love this video. We all have things we’re working through. We all want to be our best selves and continually over analyze what’s the best way to do that. There’s always hesitation.
Damn Matt, Stay strong bro! This is one of the most engaging stories on this channel yet. Deep story
This guy is one hell of an inspiration!!!!!
Wow, Mike, your story resonates with me man. Much respect bro!
I didn't know i was obsessed with the overall outcome and process of everything life has to offer until i started watching Matts channel. That's the reason i watch every video he post.
Awesome story Matt, I appreciate you sharing! Going to check it out.
good for you man, and your honesty.
Been watching since somewhere under 20K, but I think this is one of my favorite videos.
I can relate to this on so many levels! Back when I was in school for engineering I can remember having the feeling I was better than everyone else. I was the OCD guy that had to have everything perfect, from school projects to keeping the car clean. I bought a brand new WRX when I was 20 years old and went overboard looking after and worrying about the car that it affected the other aspects of my life. From parking in the furthest spot in the parking lot to avoid door dings to then be worried I parked so far in the middle of nowhere that it would be an easy target for vandalism caused me to have anxiety. The only time I could enjoy owning the car was when I was driving it. I made the decision to sell the car for the sole reason that it was consuming me and I bought an older Subaru that was worth 20% of the WRX and already had some miles and use. I am now happier than I ever was. This switch applied to everything in my life and has been a humbling exercise in finding what life really is all about. Material possesions should be a bonus in life, not the priority, and the people, time, and opportunities are the things to really look forward to.
Amazing story! I have OCD myself and sometimes it is a blessing that can get you to the places, but sometimes it is a curse that could make simplest things impossible to deal with. Really enjoyed the story and how that man learns the whole new world about himself at his 30+ years. In my case I had to fall at the bottom to realize such things.
Excellent video. This guy is great. Love the garage. Keep at it!
Matt and Ed, my two favorite automotive personalities. This might be my favorite VINWiki video yet.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing his story!
Matt has the nicest car wash bay at his house, I didn't even know I needed half the stuff I want until I started watching his channel. He regularly gives a new layer of insight you can't normally find.
I....wow! That was a lot different than what I was expecting. His OCD is really apparent, practically screaming through the pictures of his garage. That must have been really hard to have let himself allow himself (if that makes any sense) to be open enough to show them.
This makes complete sense. I watched a few of his videos and I think I even made a comment or two about his speaking style but glad to know he is mentally in a better place.
Self realization is amazing! Great Job!!

The magic of life is sharing. Thanks for sharing your story mate.
You are a trippy dude. I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum. When dealing with folks that live in a certain bubble I've found it helps to let them know that I like them for who they are, and not what they have and mean it. It's a learning curve. ..
Matt’s a good guy, bought a bunch of his micro fiber a few years ago and he shipped it all the way to Hawaii for me. He got me started in detailing for sure
Its such a shame that more people have not seen this video, its such a game changer for so many people who have never heard differently from what is in their head, just like Matt said he was the first 34 years of his life. The intro hook to this video is one of the best ones of any vinwiki video, to this day
It takes a lot to admit you are flawed and to let people into your life like this guy has. God bless. I hope you continue to use your OCD to uplift others.
This speaks to me deeply. Thanks for sharing.
Vinwiki helps me wake up every day, because of the stories like this. Everything from Ed saying "you need to slog through some crappy jobs just to make it to your dream" job that help me get through my crappy job on burr bench just so they will pay for my schooling to become an engineer, to this guys stories helping me understand how ocd affects different people in different ways and helps me understand my girlfriend's ocd and better help her get through life. I dont know if anyone on the vinwiki team will read this but I just want to say thank you to everybody who is involved in putting these videos out.
Well articulated Matt. I've thoroughly enjoyed the OG community, both as a means for knowledge expansion related to auto detailing as well as just the overall mindset of those in it and running it. Keep it up! You might also want to fix the drywall at the top of the access plate on your water setup @ 5:49. ;)
First KZread video I can relate to as an Automotive Enthusiast. I'm not OCD about the floor and all that other nonsense but OCD about the Mechanical part. Making sure all the pulleys are clean of dust so it doesn't get to the pulley bearings, Alignment perfect, tire PSI even, headlights leveled, ball joints greased, ensuring repairs are done the proper way with OEM parts, radiator is clean and Bug free etc etc etc
Nice collection of detailing supplies. Its like you are in the detailing isle at pep-boys. You even have more stocked behind the open bottles. Nice!
Exactly like my dad. Has a huge tool box like that full of tools that never been used. Truck that’s never been off-roaded. I grew up thinking he cared more about his stuff more than his kids because he spent so much time obsessing over his stuff. Soo this guy doesn’t think it’s a big deal, it’s just the way he is, but his kids will one day.
Thanks for this video vinwiki, it is you most important video ever, thanks.
Very interesting guest 👍👍 I can imagine how the OCD has affected his life but in my opinion, people with that psychological phenomena are the very few people in the car industry who can push cars to be near perfect. As an engineer also, our pursuit to push the limits of technology and enhance anything we touch compliments well a person with the mentality that things must be as perfect and neat as they can be. Loved this video
Beautiful cars, a great family and balls of steal to put yourself out there. Hats off to you. Keep the obsession and passion going!
6:45 - Absolutely - "Be the host for the party you want to go to" has been the hardest lesson I've learned in my 50 years. I know avoidance can be a bitch - thanks so much for coming anyway, Matt. Subscribed. :-) EDIT: 8:24 - You're not wrong.

Great video!!!! Loved the insight!!!
Dude, that track tape photo at 6:48 just makes me happy..... Matt has to be one of the most relatable people in car youtubers for me. Savagegeese is another one, you guys should get him on the show!
I LOVE this guys garage... I live with my father who is a horder and will collect everything, and too many of the same thing... I have no where to work on my car, and have to do it outside. For someone that hates to lay on the ground and get dirty... it keeps me from fixing my car that sits out right now with a broken timing belt. His tools are not sorted, just piled into a drawer of box ends, and a drawer of sockets, and a drawer of pliers, and screw drivers. To me that is not organized enough.
Well spoken Matt. 32 years old and just starting to realize some of the things you mention in here.
I was diagnosed with OCD a few years ago although my OCD has nothing to do with cleaning. I also used to post on forums right after I was diagnosed as a way to cope as well and I just finished my first semester as an engineering student. Glad to see engineers with similar conditions.
Thanks for sharing Matt. I thought that I lived in my own head and think too much. You make me feel so normal. (whatever that is)
You should be proud of yourself, that level of self-reflection isn't easy. It's not about where you started, but about how far you've come.
Very interesting perspective. I found Matt's channel a while ago, started watching a video and thought, "this guys an a-hole", then I kept watching and ended up learning something pretty useful that I've implemented a budget version of in my garage. I've grown to appreciate his fastidiousness and no-compromise adherence to his standards. Now I'm just sitting here wanting a garage that clean, but knowing it'll never be that way, lol.
Thanks Matt, you’re an inspiration.
