How Authentic Stories Drive Change: Equity at ISTE 2019

One of the key themes at #ISTE19 was equity. What are the real-world challenges of equity in Education? And what approaches work best in practice?
We had an opportunity to learn that technology and storytelling have the potential to tip the scales in favor of equity. Technology gives us the tools to share our voice and make a message stick, while storytelling helps to tell authentic stories that drive change.

Students on Race: • "Because I’m Latino, I...
It's one thing to say that we support equity but it's another thing entirely to do it in practice at scale. What are the real-world challenges of equity in Education? And what approaches work best in practice?
We had an opportunity to learn first hand about the real world experiences of schools in Ferguson after the death of Michael Brown that triggered the Black Lives Matter movement. Here's Ladue School District's Patricia Brown sharing her story:
For many race seems like an issue that we dealt with in the 60s, many think that it's not relevant in 2019.
So why start with Racism? ISTE Keynote Speaker Cheyenne Batista shared interviews with 12 year olds about the racism they face today that honestly made we want to cry. I'll leave a link to it in the description • "Because I’m Latino, I... .
Cheyenne also shared how Schools Perpetuate inequity through silence, fear, resistance, uninformed policies, inadqueate curricula, and unexamined mindsets. If we're not putting time in our calendars for equity then it's not a priority.
