Thanks for explaining that, amid all the "storytelling" it was hard to understand what happened from the Discovery video.

Should be “Armstrong and Scott’s.” Just because Armstrong was the first on the moon doesn’t give you the right to leave him out. Scott also walked on 15.

Quibble time. Armstrong and Scott didn't have their helmets on and their pressure suits were stripped to their waists as the capsule was pressurized.

Armstrong could've died at least twice, before he even went to the moon.

I just watched the movie called Hidden Figures. If the whole Go No Go pinpoint reentry took so much calculating to be so dead on accurate then why was Scott Carpenter able to ignore orders and reenter whenever he wanted? And then the time Gemini 8 went into that out of control tumble and Neil Armstrong saved the day by hitting the reentry thrusters aborting early? Or, am I not understanding something about the whole reentry thing?

From what I’ve learned. They re-entered the atmosphere precisely because the re-entry thrusters were activated. That was their very last option and only option if nothing else worked. Ground (headquarters?)knew they activated those thrusters and ordered them to re-enter the atmosphere as soon as possible. They landed in Okinawa, their original landing zone was in the Caribbean. So while it took a lot work and math to get a whole mission underway, the second they were presented with such an unforeseen and potentially dangerous situation, they decided to land them immediately.

@@donnyhh313 I sorta forgot about this. But as I recall in the movie reentry had to be very mathematically planned and there was no AGS (guidance computer) yet, at least not on Mercury. I do think by Gemini 8 yes. But I've always been confused how Scott Carpenter pulled his little stunt. I'm guessing Mission Control was always full of mathematical engineers calculating away in flight. Plus the computers. Even so, it seems Carpenter went off grid and pulled that whole reentry stunt off by his own calculating. Pretty bold, if you ask me. A bit dumb too.

@@bruce92106 I don’t think I understand what the stunt was. Is it the firing the reentry thrusters or entering the atmosphere to head back to earth? It was Neil who fired the thrusters to regain control. They were tumbling and in a spin. They were in a high G roll, I believe it reached 9G. So This was due to a faulty thrusters that stayed on causing the roll. Neil activated the reentry thrusters as a last resort after turning things off and on and trying to control it the conventional way. This wasn’t exactly random as they have actually done similar simulations on the ground on simulators. Because the thrusters was still on and it required constant correction, it was deemed necessary for them to land before they ran out of fuel completely. Of course the math had to be figured out but it was only reentry and they really had to get the angle right. Also, while the math has to be accurate. It doesn’t have to be EXACT. Apollo 13 is a testament to how so many things could go wrong and still return them to earth. In fact, even while trying to get them back to earth, there were many close calls caused by human error both by the astronauts and command center. It’s amazing they were still able to get back.

Because it had a malfunctioning thruster which is what caused it to keep rolling. A fuel leak can cause such a thing.
