-- BREAK --
Nestled deep within the Air Force's Nevada Test and Training Range, the remote and highly classified facility we've come to know as Area 51 has been the heart of secretive American aircraft programs - and a fair bit of modern folklore - for more than a half-century now.
Let's talk about how they manage to keep the cutting-edge programs they test away from the prying eyes of the public... and the spy satellites zooming overhead.

@@wolfbehemoth13 LOL. Can't say that really sounds like the worst thing though. Honestly would be nice if in some of these categories there is a little more practical and a little less advanced. Being told you can't get Basic 782 Gear issued at your command or funding shortfalls stopping personnel from being able to train together in the field as a Unit; followed by all the hype in the media about everyone else in the world getting what they need can make morale and cohesion suffer. Any number of circumstances and rationale case by case to go with that statement I made. But at its core, generally speaking it really kicks a Service Member in the dick when they aren't equipped by their Country but so many others are equipped by the same country that wouldn't take care of their own. Now Yall can go into the Geo-Ally-Partnerizations that I fully understand, but I'll say it everytime for the sake of those I Lead. Give me my results, not excuses. Manage my statements all you want on your keyboard rifle range with the All-CONUS mindset that effects too many people anymore. For those that live in reality and seen highs and lows over 20 years time; going to take a whole lot of talking to make me back off that box. To have a Leader that will not sacrifice keeping it Simple for waht could potentially waste Billions of Dollars I salute that. Don't budge that bottom line for your military if you genuinely expect them to also hold that same line on their day of days. R/ MuffinMan

There are supposedly other secret sites similar to Area 51 that might exist, but they are likely all known by our adversaries.

Gordon Cooper was one of the original Mercury 7. He was the last of them to fly, later (also) flying on Gemini 5 in 1965. He was also a semi-pro photographer. He was able to take a 35 mm camera with some good lenses up with him. When he landed, after Gemini 5, it took him a while to get his camera and film back. Seems he'd managed to snap the best, clearest pictures of Area 51 to that date. He explains this in "Leap of Faith," published in 2000.

@Sandboxx One thing about Area-51 which everyone gets wrong, it's not called Area-51 but its actually designation is Area-48. Now Area-51 does have a association with aliens because Area-51 is in New Mexico it is where they tested the first nuclear bomb and it's right next to Roswell which is where the Area-51 myth came from. Now for those that don't believe me have a look online at aeronautical maps like at SkyVector and it will show the restricted airspaces and Neverdas Area-48.

Small correction Alex, in regards to on-orbital satellite refueling (emphasis, my own): _"The first refueling tests between two satellites began in _*_March 2007._*_ At the time, DARPA launched and deployed its Orbital Express satellite. The satellite consisted of two satellites DARPA used to test docking, undocking, repair, and refueling procedures. _*_The mission was successful."_* The article is behind a paywall I think (at the very least, requires an account to login with), so I can't quote more than what Google provided. Which on that note... Google AI Overview of that very same article, claims the first successful instance was actually in _2003..._ I'm more apt to trust their conventional result's snippets though. Those are just TESTS though, which I'm pretty sure there's also been fast more recent ones by commercial companies... But outside of that, you're not wrong, as we've not had any accomplished via an offered service, neither private nor commercial.

There are fairly large aquifers under most of Nevada. One of the worries with placing a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, which is near Area 51, was that if any of it were to leak there is a potential for it to contaminate the aquifer under Amargosa Valley, which has about 1400 or so people using it.

You know what would be great...if the engineers make some cardboard silhouettes of some flying saucers and other exotic craft and leave them in the opening for the adversaries satellites to catch photos of...that would drive them crazy ...it will keep them guessing like it's a pop quiz😂😂😂

That would work for photos, but lots of spy satellites use radar instead/also

The Nevada testing range was divided into a numbered grid. Groom Lake is in Area %1 on the grid. Most of the testing took place in Area 44, I think.

Instead of doing all that cardboard shit and heater stuff, they could just sprayed water on the floor. like extremely cold water. or some type of liquid nitro or something and "erased" or muddy up the silhouette. Correct me if im wrong.

I've got news for you, the really secret stuff has likely, for some time, been happening at the Woomera test range in South Australia - the worlds largest aerial test range. A few years ago the Chinese tried to buy a parcel of Stations (big ranches) owned by an agricultural company, because one of them sat right next to Woomera. They were not allowed to make the purchase. Secrecy at Woomera is unsurpassed, given it's remote location and extremely sparse local population distribution.

Lived in Rachel, Nevada for about a year. We would go out to the "mail box" at night hoping to see something like a laser light show or whatever. Mostly we saw "Janet" flights coming in and out. But with so little ambient light you could see satellites passing over and yes you can tell the difference from an aircraft and a satellite.

No. In 2001 the US would not allow Air Guard aircraft to be armed. They were not* even allowed to posses any weapons or ammunition. And they were tasked with protecting the capital.

Hi Justin: Good info. I figured if they weren't armed it had to be something along the lines of what you explained. Just like a firearm without ammo., it's pretty much useless unless it's used as a bludgeoning device. Which is exactly what they were trying to use those F-16's for. Thanks for the info.
