If they were eating the big plant, you should have left it in. It's clearly an important and renewable food source for them. Besides, it looks barren with no complex plants.
@HomemadeEcosystems
Жыл бұрын
I'm going to add parts of it as food for the animals, the plant was getting too big for the terrarium, the roots were also getting too big! But you are right it looks a bit barren now, new plants will probably pop up soon
@curvingfyre6810
Жыл бұрын
@@HomemadeEcosystems you mean the roots were pushing up out of the substrate? That's unfortunate if so. Hopefully another plant will crop up that's as good a food source.
@HomemadeEcosystems
Жыл бұрын
@@curvingfyre6810 yes indeed! the plant was becoming too high to support its own weight (substrate not deep enough). Yes i'm sure new plants will appear they do so all the time. I also add dead and fresh leaves regulary
@curvingfyre6810
Жыл бұрын
@@HomemadeEcosystems For me the goal is always a self sufficient environment. I'll step in for emergencies, but these creatures are happiest in nature, and I want them as close to that as possible, so having their food source grow with them is always my goal. For situations like this, what I might've done is uproot the plant, cut off the leaves on one side of its stem, and lay it on its side. Most stem plants will propagate themselves in the wild this way as they grow too tall, uprooting, falling over, and growing new roots and stems from each leaf-bearing node, penetrating the substrate again from above it. Often the original stem will remain alive too, even on its side like that, making the new upright stems more stable. Watercress and other edible stem plants are particularly prone to this and watercress particularly is extremely terrarium (and even aquarium) friendly.
