How Arduino is open-sourcing imagination | Massimo Banzi

www.ted.com Massimo Banzi helped invent the Arduino, a tiny, easy-to-use open-source microcontroller that's inspired thousands of people around the world to make the coolest things they can imagine -- from toys to satellite gear. Because, as he says, "You don't need anyone's permission to make something great."
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/tra...

    That's the great thing about open source. It allows the whole humanity to build on everything that's already build and it accumulates fast. And it still puts money on the move because bigger projects need infrastructure, energy, materials and workforce, and the creative workforce is effectively grown from the open source community itself.

I jumped in and spent tons and tons of time reading, testing, expanding, testing, writing, buying new sensors. It's an awesome time to be alive! And I'm 50 years old! Very cool and awesome time in electronics!

    All I can say: thank you for Arduino! It is like giving someone fishing skills instead of giving them that proverbial fish. Before I would've insisted on copyrighting my half developed work, but now I can share my idea and get thousands of ideas back: one better than the other. I hold progress much more valuable than profit.

    13:40 so cool when you think about it was just a breadboard-/hobby project and then they cleaned it up and are in business with their idea. All you need is the Atmel chip (because the board is just for prototyping) and create a “stand alone” Arduino and bring the cost to 5€ instead of 25€.

    This is a nice example how much mankind can accomplish when they share their knowledge instead of locking it behind proprietary walls. Instead of having our current capitalistic system we should transition to a society that shares knowledge and resources freely. The monetary system as we have it is flawed by design and can only lead to a larger gap between the rich and the poor and to more financial crises, and while doing that it will also destroy our nature and our planet. NOW is the time for change!

    Too bad he failed to mention Hernando Barragan, who's master's thesis was the basis for all the later development of Arduino and all its offshoots. His original work, called "wiring" appeared in only one slide, briefly at the beginning, but was not mentioned by Banzi at all. Interesting that Banzi often says "You don't need anyone's permission..." when referring to open source hardware and software, you can just go ahead and use it. Fair enough, but at least have the common decency and grace to acknowledge whose work yours is based on. Credit where credit is due.

  • @santopino2546

    @santopino2546

    I agree, there seems to be some dishonesty in Banzi's actions. You should nevertheless consider that the only "new Idea" was making the product open source. As acknowledged by all players, they were all playing around with other similar easy systems like Basic Stamp, PICAXE, JAL and others. I'm not sure if it's Hernando's work that brought the success or simply the marketing strategy of the Arduino Team. Arduino after all has a terrible IDE, using the original ATMEL Studio with ICE is far better and gives you complete control, an excellent color coded and helpful IDE. I'm quite sure that the Arduino team could have made a similar success without inventing anything new, simply making open source their boards and putting out hundreds of code examples for free.
