How Architect Fahad Malik Is Living In London Differently
To read more about Fahad's innovative home, buy your copy of The Modern House Magazine here: themodernhouse.media/wfx
High Street House is a project in west London designed by Teatum + Teatum and developed by Noiascape, which proposes a new approach to urban life. Fahad Malik, an architect who contributed to the project, now lives and works in the mixed-use building, running his practice, Wadhal, from the space. For the autumn/winter edition of The Modern House Magazine we met Fahad to discover the building's progressive ideas about contemporary urban life. To celebrate its launch, we’re excited to share the coinciding film we made upon our visit, in which we asked the young architect to share his Seven Wonders.

Essential viewing, not just for architects. One book library, love it
People spend more time in their bedroom because they can't afford to live anywhere with a separate living room. It's economic pressures causing a social change.

Gorgeous space and love that it’s so well thought out!
Nicely done. I enjoyed the communal space at the entrance to foster a greater sense of community and knowing one's neighbour.
LOVE the one book library!
Space within a space - that's interesting. With that trend to even convert Victorian houses to open plan so that coming from the street you immediately are in the living room, it's quite nice to introduce some separation again. It can have a soothing effect. That's also because of the sound deadening effect that alcove or niche will have.

Personally I like separation. Look at COVID lockdowns, people needed their own spaces within families.
“Idle time is underrated” 💯💯💯
Looks like my old uni room in halls, dark and claustrophobic with breeze block walls. Doesn’t look very comfortable to me.
Gorgeous space Fahad! I also adore your sandals ✨❤️🩴 💫

Extremely Zen experience and space. He seems like the proverbial 'perfect neighbor' you'd love to drop in on, except he'd probably, and ever-so-politely, ask you to leave after a couple of hours. 😉

Love the flat and my future husband in it.... Fahad is quite the looker! 🙂
The bespoke plywood furniture do look very nice and complement the cement block walls. Rooms do feel where small and tight, but I guess if you're living nomad life with not that much of stuff then this is ok. I did live in London and all my belongings did fit into 2 travel bags.
love the wonky vases!
Superb. Properly thoughtful and considered.

As a woman of South Asian descent living in Brooklyn for years, he gives me an obnoxious hipster vibe- we have a lot of them here.
I have one question... He really reads in that hard, wooden chair? It must be soooo uncomfortable, unless he reads really short things like few poems or something
@inkfr0

Most of this design feels like it was made for looks, not ergonomics. Noticed also that wooden storage under the bed at 02:30 - I've almost felt my leg hurt when he was passing that corner in such a tight room. Now imagine doing it at night.
Beautiful!

that was sick , theres nice decent light in there but why was that lamo mad close to his head when he was on that special chair, its like he wants the space to hold him everything so tight knit together, whole time i wanted to take a deep breath cuz it felt so squeeeeezed
I still do not get how he is "living differently". But, fine...make architects look like philosophers, solving the problems of the city living with bespoke furniture and love for a book randolmly placed on the stairs.

Add an automatic adjustable rise and fall bed. Rather than a flat mattress. I like the core idea and co-working space, although it's not anything groundbreaking. I wish architecture and design vids had a more down-to-earth vibe (without it being too commercial or overly 'friendly'). Most vids have this pretentious vibe, no disrespect. Design isn't that cerbral anyway, most people can intuit good design by nature so no need to make it seem more high art than it is.
@hansmemling7605

thank you for saying that. There is some kind of contemptuousness to a lot of this stuff that I couldn't quite express. You voiced it perfectly.
He seems to be a very nice person. Hate all the walls in his flat.
I like his chanclas
I love the clean lines of the spaces. You can tell an architect designed it all. Really a lovely home you have there in London. I live 50 miles North of San Francisco, California...Gods Country they say. I dunno bout that but it's my country 4 sure. I must tell you that I have another reason to comment here. I ran into a very backward and creepy man who was saying that women are trying to "erase" men because women only see men as an object for growth. His name was also Fahad Malick, but a very insecure person, not like you, a secure man living beautiful life. I guess I wanted to warn you if people start calling you a creep!
Am I the only one who thought this looked like a prison with artsy furniture in? Not the sort of place to go home and switch off after a busy day when you're in a breeze block studio flat. Not for me.

you are not the only one. I might be wrong but I think I detect some snideness or contemptuousness towards what makes people happy in a building. It kind of looks like it was made by people with money to pretend to live like the poor or a rich man's impression of how the poor live in a trendy way. Can't quite put my finger on it but the result of this overly philosophized (room within a room n stuff) building looks depressing to me.

@@hansmemling7605 I think what you're talking about is minimalism. It's not a subject I've read up on, but I've been accused of having a minimalist aesthetic (though I don't actually think that's true). I don't think it's about pretending to be poor; I think it represents a genuine attempt to put certain values into practice --- and not just one value, but a constellation of them. One might be the belief that the creation of a neat and orderly external environment might help a person in such a space cultivate a like, inner state (this relates to the zen-like vibe that often surrounds minimalism). Another related but I think distinct motivation might be seen as ethical, a kind of reaction against the mass production of junk which much of our species has been up to for awhile now and which many were won't to identify as being synonymous with progress. This opens up to the contempt that you (I think correctly) mention for the way people normally live. There's a kind of holy stink to it all sometimes
This is fucking sick.
reminds me of a cheap city office or bank.
"one book library"... a thinking wall... a reading armchair? Glass vases? Really?
Totally love the strong color , but that's me. No doubt a lot of people find strong color "cheap" or vulgar.
I really enjoyed how all the designer furniture was highlighted, but the IKEA LIXHULT cabinets were left to sit in the background in shame and anonymity.
I have to say I don't like this one at all - it looks incredibly claustrophobic. I'd feel cabin fever in minutes. Sort of like staying in a cement garage with a single window. Unless of course there's much more to this than we've been shown? Where's the softness? I wish my neighbours were the kind to leave anything other than a discarded sweet wrapper for me on my staircase
It looks like he lives and sleeps in the garage 😐. I’ll pass thanks.
I seriously wouldn't choose those colours like red and the wooden door colours are giving me the vibes of buplic places like toilet or student dorm. I duno people have different tastes. I do interior design and graphic design my self I am quite OCD when it comes to look but I have to always cater to the clients liking.
In a way it also sorta looks like a more luxurious and clean prison room, where a rich american would serve his/her time
“weird place for living”
