Apple and Google have one of Silicon Valley’s most famous rivalries, but behind the scenes they maintain a deal worth $8 billion to $12 billion a year according to a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit. Here’s how they came to depend on each other. Photo illustration: Jaden Urbi

    @andrejagreen It is more effective for Google than you might think. eg. in iPhones, you can directly type any single keyword into the browser link of Safari and if it is not a website link, you will directly get search results on Google. this in turn becomes a way for Google to earn money from advertisers who pay Google to display their Google search results/products. Once users become used to this, they will just keep searching like this with Safari instead of going directly to any search engine website first, especially if they are already using the browser on the phone. This enables Google to lock in users; users need not be aware or even admit that they prefer Google over Yahoo or Bing, but they will repeatedly use this function until Google's search function from Safari is all they use. This advantage is very pivotal in times of instant gratification in a digitized world where users want information as soon as possible, wherever as possible.

  • @ayanc13

    @ayanc13

    3 жыл бұрын

    @andrejagreen and that would be doable if Google was trashy and didn't work like intended. Google on the contrary knows you more than you know yourself and gives you correct answers. So yeah even if it's 3 buttons, unless apple asks users by default to select the search engine, most users wont be changing the default search engine.

    Google has by far the best search engine. It's not a matter of monopoly, it's just that no one else comes near the quality of their search results. And it's not that a small company can come along and surpass them in the near future. A search engine at this level needs infrastructure, a lot of data and processing power. Only a few companies in the world have those capabilities, and they're all huge, they all raise monopoly concerns already. You could make them sell youtube or gmail, but that wouldn't solve this particular problem.

By splitting them into smaller, more easily digestible pieces, they’re going to eat up US companies for breakfast if we split them, and also the sheer amount of security concerns dividing them will raise is stupidly high, it would also slow down growth in many areas, and negatively affect the American way of living in a very direct way, it’s just not worth it

    I think Google's product is strong and has a robust sense of confidence and familiarity from the general public. But I think it would be rash to assume this an unshakeable faith. Complacency is a disease, and if Google let up the pressure on their market cornering strategy it is only a matter of time before competitors flock to eat away at the pie. Honestly, what Google has more than anything, more than money, is power. The phrase "Gatekeepers to the Internet" is so salient because it shows what exactly makes Google special. It's hard to hold onto all that power forever.

    If you have choices the monopoly in this case doesn’t exist. You can choose wherever search engine you like by default and if not you can [ very low ] you can search directly in the rest of the search engines. Same with the browser. Customer always choose e the best. In the beginning of the must demanding service of Internet search was [ and today] crucial. Altavista was the dominant player. Then Inkitomi. Suddenly in a dorm at Stanford University to graduate student solve the basic defect of this search engines with better rank algorithm: Ruby was born and renamed as Google. A new search engine in the future? For sure yes. May in some place a couple of genius or inside other company something even better begins. The real battle as usual is in the capability to attract, hire and buy the greatest minds in this field. BTW the DoJ must act favoring the customers.
