I'm 44 now, but the times I went to Vietnam instantaneously relieved all my stress. Everyone around was friendly and talking to me. It's a small usa city vibe that's everywhere in Vietnam. My mental health and spirit was top of the world. Something I thought I had the whole time growing up in the US. There's just lots of 9 to 5 and daily grind stress that builds up living in the US without realizing it. I only realized such a significant mental shift when I went to VN. Other places I've traveled to have not had the same result. I think it's the Vietnamese culture and its friendly people that create such positive emotional impact 🎉❤

I visited VN for the first time about 5 years ago. I have since gone back 4 more times, each trip getting longer. I spent almost 2 months there the last trip. I would love to live in Vietnam. It has its cons- like any other place in the world, including the US and western Europe. Some cons are traffic, tropical summer heat, etc. Overall though, Vietnam is a treasure. Many wonderful cities and towns to visit. Fantastic people. Great food. Quality and affordability are everywhere. I will be back, maybe to live for good? I wish the country continued success!! Thanks for sharing this candid conversation.

This is a nice trend, seeing young VK’s taking the leap for a totally new experience. I do feel for this cohort. I could write a book about how adult children of the VK 55 to 70 year old generation have been affected by living between two cultures. Their parents will never see Vietnam the same way as they do. This cohort can make big money and they are well educated so they know exactly what they’re doing. The struggles of their parents has paid off immensely because They have raised successful hard-working children who have lived their lives, obeying their parents and respecting them at all levels .I can see that these guys have been humbled by their own personal life experiences. I’ve lived my life around the Vietnamese community in Australia and also in Vietnam for more than 40 years so I know exactly what I am writing about. Fascinating people with very strong family values that further connect them to each other as a community.

Hi. I don't know if you're familiar with Kyle Le? He's on YT too. He's US based now but he lived & worked in VN for ~8 yrs (?) post college, I think. He has made several vids abt VK, reunification vids, etc. One of his interviewees might be of interest to you. I forgot his name but the vid title is "his dream was to watch TV". That guy was brought to the US as a child (no parents) and was adopted by an American (white) couple. I think his age is within your study. You may want to contact Kyle and the guy, in case he wants to be interviewed. Kyle has made several follow up vids abt him. He (the guy) regularly visits VN, I think.

I remember reading about the "push and pull" of hardship at home and promise of rewards in the west, leading to asian migration to the US in previous centuries. Maybe similar push pull dynamics leading to the reverse now.

@@natetran9987 thnx for the info. I think I haven't watched that anthropologist interview with Kyle. He uploaded a vid recently - abt a Viet woman (from US) who returned to VN after 50+ yrs. The guy I'm referring to (who would be an interesting interviewee for this Australian author) is a guy featured by Kyle. He arrived in the US alone as a kid & was adopted by white parents. He's successful, middle class, married to a white woman, sends money to his sister/ family in VN. I think his story might be useful to @kathleen, if she can contact him via Kyle.

I went back to Vietnam for three weeks recently and love Vietnam and love the people of Vietnam. The hospitality had been insane and beyond expectations, the cost of living was so inexpensive and Vietnam was stunning when we drove from North to South. However, I would never trade any place on earth for America. No matter where I traveled to but I began to miss home (America) after a month.

I love the USA

DEFINITELY LIFE IN AMERICA IS OVERRATED. HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT VIETNAM 🇻🇳 LAST YEAR FOR 2 MONTHS. HAD THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE. I'M THINKING ABOUT GOING BACK THERE TO LIVE AND RETIRE EVENTUALLY BC THERE'S MORE VALUE LIVING THERE THEN IN THE STATES ESPECIALLY IF U HAVE SOME MONEY WHERE ITS GOES FURTHER THERE

I love his family's hometown of Vinh Long. I do like Saigon also, but only for two or three days at a time. Too loud and busy for my tastes. Vinh Long is a beautiful riverfront city about 120 km south of Sgn. Maybe a 2 hr drive. Very peaceful there and very few tourists. I have been coming to Vinh Long since 2017, and fell in love with the city and its people. I met my Vietnamese Wife there in 2018, and have a house nearby. I learned Vietnamese language because she does not speak English. My tieng viet is not perfect yet, but I am totally immersed as one of the only White Westerners there. That suits me fine, since I learn tieng viet nua moi ngay o do. I stay in Vinh Long during the American Winters, and come home to America in the Spring each year...Love Vietnam...

The American dreams here in America is overwork and more overwork and no life. Beware for those who are dreaming of the American dreams. I promise you this, one day you’ll wake up from your own suffering and you’ll realize you’ve been in a deep dream.

I can confirm this, as a Vietnamese, I had worked in US, I find that like any current super power countries, US tends to work hard, work to work more. In Vietnam, you have more sense of life, since you have other stuffs, like family, friends, community. It's like one country mainly for people who love working ( I do, since most of new technology is from US, and they invest a lot in all of those areas, another country is China but they are not so open for foreigners ), and Vietnam is for work-life balance.

It is easy for most expats but for an average Vietnamese in Vietnam is not easy. It is affordable to an American to buy a bowl of noodle for about $2 but not for the locals making about $200 a month.

That is when you are unskilled locals. Just like every where else, you have skills and brain, you can make anywhere, but there are so many opportunities to make it rich easier and less regulations and taxes there in VN than in US. You gotta keep much of money you earn in your pocket in VN, not in US, Canada, EU. Poor in the US or in the West (so called) is much worst than in VN.

YEAP im heading towards VIETNAM too bought the ticket for SEPTEMBER 2024......got the passport and visa....and ready to ROCKKKKK !

Looks like the main reason he moved to VN is to find love, get married and start a family since he said he met his wife in VN. I know it's hard to do all those in US now.

Can you ask what jobs they do to sustain the lifestyle

I agree with the other poster. Visit first & stay for a long time (a month or longer). Live as a resident, not as a tourist. Live in an apartment (or hotel room w/ kitchenette), buy groceries, cook, gym (if it's impt to you), learn abt the govt, healthcare, public utilities, etc. Yes, you will need a source of income, preferably from the West.

As a kid I had US citizenship and Vietnamese passport, and didn’t need visa to go to Vietnam. I don’t know if I had Vietnamese citizenship though, although if I had the passport, I assume I did, or could.

If you have VN passport, then you don't need a visa to stay in VN. You're a citizen & can stay there indefinitely. AFAIK, VN doesn't allow dual citizenship but they give special visas for Viet Kieu.

As a person who has more than 25 years lived in Việt Nam and more than 10 years in USA, I think I know clearly about both. At first you may like it as tourist then you decide to live in Viet nam, it is good for you, life always changes and we should do something new to refresh our life. Thanks god that you grown up in usa, have college-university, that is the most huge thing your parents gave to you, they gave you the option that you can live in any country you want since you are from number 1 country already ( American passport ) .You can move from us to Việt Nam very easy but in different way your parents paid more for it. If it good enough they would not leave there and me too. Since you are not grown up in Viet nam so it is hard to tell, but I still remember I need to carry 5kg bag pack since I went to school at 6, at 10 I study from 7am to 8pm sometime 9pm after many classes😂, I still don’t know if I used them but I know I lost a lot of my childhood. I don’t want my children be like me, Anyway, I dont show you how good or how bad, as long as you live there you will know.

Im a white guy , i moved to Vietnam age 23 left age 30 ... why ( no social security, no medicare, no disability benefits, you just sell loterry tickets in vietnam basically ) i still visit with my wife every 5 years for a month...happier as a tourist

Becareful out there my VK brothers. Everyone looks at you like a walking atm just like any other expat.

Takes a few years for the reality to sink in. Parents risked their lives to better their children'slives. Here you are living in a country that doesn't even treat their citizens fairly makes you think twice about the treatment you'd get when.

Its american priviledges experiences. Even a vietnamese like myself dont get to enjoy sich experiences, most of us dont smile because we happy, we smile becauae it bring food to the table.

Also bringing US dollars to Vietnam and spending in VN D adds to the overall charm. I see a lot of Viet Kieus particularly men go back yo Vietnam to find a girlfriend or a wife. I don’t think it’s the same case for Viet Kieu ladies.

Age is just a number 😂

Vietnam is beautiful but not for everyone! It's one of the most chaotic countries in southeast Asia. Dealing with constant honking, the traffic the motercycle situation. The hustler mentality of the vietnamese people. It's a great place for a vacation, but to live there would be wild. (This is just my opinion)

I thought about moving to VIET NAM too then I did a great deal of research and found out lots of bad stuffs about VIET NAM why you should not live there. 1. Air pollution is the worse in the world. 2. Food poisoning is the norm 3. The water is polluted 4. Health care is very bad. Go to any government hospital and look for yourself. 5. Traffic is a nightmare. 6. The weather is extremely hot. 7. The government often cut off water and electricity due to shortage. 8. When it rains, flood everywhere. The water from the sewer smell very bad. Don’t let these bad things hold you back from living in VIET NAM. Enjoy

THIS. Like yea, it’s great bringing western income and money to a third world country and living like a king/queen (just make sure you’re supporting the locals too), and on top of that, social life for an Asian person is a lot better back home as opposed to having to deal with racism and discrimination against Asians which is growing more and more in the US. But I myself also love nature and being around others who do as well. Very few places in the world beats the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest desert/canyon scenes, and the Hawai’i islands. The pollution, overcrowdedness, and the general lack of care for the environment would make me depressed just as much. If they didn’t have those problems though, I’d be totally onboard!

The prevalent thought process is probably no just so they can still travel where ever they want without needing visa. They probably wouldn’t use it to go back to the US, although a few invariably will.
